Don’t know why I liked this at release. Quite sour now and a bit eggy.

Maybe a bit overoaked for me. But still so young, hard to say. Wasn't wowed.

sweet oak dominates the nose and palette. It is a nice wine for the price, especially if you are charmed by sweet oak. But the finish is a bit short and after a few glasses I'm really longing for more character, length and complexity.

Massive fruit bomb. Some nice characters but i found it tart and overly fruity.

Amazing value - get more. Seductive immediately and enjoyed throughout the meal. Impressed with the oak quality for the price. Would have guessed double.

I liked this wine a lot upon release but now it is a very average package. There are elements of beautiful bordeaux fruit, but the package is a big turn off. Honestly, this is coming across like the wine is overly fined with slimy egg whites. yuck.

This is a 'wow' wine. In a blind tasting of 12 2016s from southern rhone, this was my favourite. Out of the bottle now it is still very primary bubbly red fruit, but after a few hours it shows amazing texture and yummy cinnamon, licorice and raisin. Amazing value. I hope as it softens and ages into more complex characters it will really shine, but i'm no expert.

Still some fruit shining through but not much tannin left. The cork was like butter. This has seen better days.

This is an absolutely fantastic riesling still showing well. In a recent vertical from 2006 - 2016, this was clearly in the top 2 wines. One of the best white wines NZ makes.

Opened up really volatile. Blew off quickly, but ended up a bitter disappointing wine, no one near the value of its price.

Best NZ SB I've had. Wonderful citrus and subtle oak, with no annoying NZ characters. So moreish, on day 2 as well.

STRAWBERRIES. This wine tastes like strawberry juice running down a slab of granite. Incredible fruit forward strawberry and intense minerity, and it WORKS. Fascintating.

Impressive for the price by the end of day 2, but overall impression was a cheaper wine, a bit short and watery minerality. And a strange impression of apple juice at times.

Exceptional velvety tannins. I think that is the most impressive aspect of the wine. Great balance. Flawless. Nothing too intense or flash, though.

Looking pretty nice now with some horse barn earthiness, rich oak, and nice Cab fruit. The new oak has an almost American coconut flavour. Something a touch tart late finish for me that annoys, but otherwise a very enjoyable wine.

Not blown away and not my favourite 2016 Rhone. The 2015 was a wow wine, but this was not for me. I remember being more impressed with the 2016 Coudoulet. But didn't try them side by side.

This is just lovely restrained CdP that you can drink a whole bottle and want more. It doesn’t jump out and wow, but there is nothing wrong. Just lovely balance. Amazing value.

In a blind tasting next to a $100 Grand Reserva 2006 Rioja and a 2014 La Landonne, it was nobody's favourite. Not as big, complex or exciting as either of those competitors. Too old for my liking.

This is a character I love in Chateauneuf: tarry fruit with a perfect balance of sweetness and flavor. The oak is there but only if you think about it. Bit of a cola thing happening. Not the most complex or dense wine, but amazing value. Instantly ordered a case.

Looking pretty nice. Amazing value. The new sweet oak is a bit new world in strength but not overbearing. Best Te Kahu I can remember.

Best wine that I've ever tasted. This was my favourite in a blind tasting that included the 3 other 100 point 2003 Guigals, the Ex Voto, Landonne and Turque. The mocha caramel character is stunning. It was hard to imagine how the wine could get any better. The Turque was a close runner up.

Absolutely incredible. I'm no expert, but after 1000s of wines, this is only second to some 2005 Guigals. Nothing wrong with it.

My 3rd favourite wine of 12 blind - the only Bordeaux in a mix of 70s and 90s Penfold Granges and rare bins. Most of the room confused this wine for Australian and thought the 1967 Bin 707 was the Bordeaux.

A bit musty/old, but pretty great for that age. Really nice palette. Lots of brown cassis, good balance of fruit/oak throughout. Big long finish. Preferred this to the '67 Grange at the blind stage.

At the blind stage, it was the top of 12 2013 wines at Geoff Kelly's 2017 tasting at Villa Maria (both me and the crowd on average). I ranked the wines in this order:

Church Road Tom 2013
Babich 100-years Cab 2013
Moueix Dominus 2013
Hieronymus 2013
Esk Valley The Terraces 2013
Stonyridge Larose 2013
Moss Wood Cabernet 2013
Puriri Hills Pope 2013
Craggy Range Sophia 2013
Sacred Hill Brokenstone 2013
Villa Maria Ngakirkiri 2013
Chateau Leoville Barton 2013

The Tom had a bit of vanilla new oak on the nose, very appealing, great density and balance and a long unfaltering finish. 'wow'. For me this wine was bested by the Hieronymus over steak a year ago, but not this time.

Easy to spot in a blind flight of 12 Shiraz. All other wines were $100 or less and this was only my 5th favourite. Would be my preferred to smell all night long, but the oak is too strong on the finish. Caveat: i've never had an old Grange, so not sure how to predict where it could be.

In a flight of 12 Shiraz at the blind stage this was my favourite above the Grange 12. Also preferred to the Rockford basketpress 10. Minty rather than eucy. Very attractive. Subtle flash of vanilla pod on the 3rd taste.

Tasting next to Cape Crest 2014, Astrolabe Province 2015, Churton 2013, Clos Henri 2013, Clos Henri 2014. Got a lot of capsicum on the nose and palette - not a big fan of that. Came off slightly sour and bitter and hugely preferred the Cape Crest.
