2016 Proprietà Sperino Uvaggio Coste della Sesia Nebbiolo Blend, Nebbiolo
PnP, then drunk over two evenings.
Drunk to check its status after a somewhat worrying TN below.
I am happy to report that this is still very young, even rustic, very far away from any maturity or, even worse, decline. To me a very nice Coste della Sesia, not too polished (rustic indeed), with quite some stuffing and very interesting aromas and flavors.

2/2/24, 8:46 AM - Yes, a relief indeed, since I still have 11 bottles in my cellar!

2016 Paitin di Pasquero-Elia Barbaresco Serraboella Sorì Paitin Nebbiolo
Wow, tremendous potential here. Double-decanted the night before for 3 hours, this med/med+ body wine offers exceptional freshness, balance and, again, potential. Those already familiar with the producer should consider a case purchase, though be aware this will need at least (for my palate) 5-7 years to truly begin to be in the zone. Should last for decades. Beautiful, power and elegance, with exceptional structure. HOLD. highly recommended+

9/29/21, 10:16 PM - Tim, a quick question: I have a few bottles of the 2016 Sori Paitin and am contemplating adding a few bottles of the 2016 Serraboella. Thoughts? Fwiw, also have a few of the 2016 Cigliuti Serraboella.

2004 Produttori del Barbaresco Barbaresco Riserva Ovello Nebbiolo
A Good Tuesday, Vol. VI: Italians (Benanti, Calafe, Produttori, Cornelissen, D&R, Quintarelli...: 2nd not great bottle of this in the last 2 years. I don't think these bottles were sound before they got to me. Muted. Tired. Non-desript, not showing Nebbiolo at all.

9/16/21, 2:21 PM - Really sorry to hear about the Ovello. Any advice about decanting? Plan to open mine soon.

2016 Proprietà Sperino Uvaggio Coste della Sesia Nebbiolo Blend, Nebbiolo
First of a case purchase. For Nebbiolo, it's tough to imagine a better QPR wine. Beautifully translucent. Rich cherry, berries (raspberries?), licorice/menthol, cloves/cinnamon/brown spices, tea, a slight bit of tar, orange pith on the finish. There's a coolness, a freshness to this wine that gives away its Alto Piemonte origin. Strong acid backbone, but very fine tannins. That, to me, is really the striking feature of this wine: The tannins are so fine that the wine itself is really quite open. I have no doubt it will age beautifully over the next 10 or 15 years, but it's enjoyable now, and it's great to have a baseline to follow it.

Proprieta Sperino's Uvaggio and rosato are so consistently delicious, and so modestly priced. Very excited for the 2016 Lessona.

9/13/21, 12:27 PM - Thanks, Tim! Have you tasted the 2016 Lessona? If so, any first impressions? Your note on the 2016 Uvaggio was great too; agree with everything you wrote.

9/13/21, 5:03 PM - Terribly sorry to hear about the back. Fingers tightly crossed for a speedy recovery. I spent an afternoon with Paolo at Isole e Olena in late 2019, not too far before things fell apart. Would really love to visit Luca soon.

9/13/21, 8:50 PM - Absolutely, would love that. My family and I usually spend the summers in Montalcino, but we love the area around Greve. Would be great to get together. Btw, your site is tremendous: great work! I think we have very similar palates.

Tart cherries, cranberries, a bit of hard candy, some licorice. Also a really appealing dark spice note on the nose: clove, cinnamon, but very well integrated. Light bodied, with a great acid streak on the finish. Obviously picked early to hold down sugars/ABV, which is 12.9. With the pale, translucent color and the licorice/spice note, it's almost reminiscent of a very well made Langhe Nebbiolo from a cooler year, minus the tannins, which on this are quite fine. Really enjoyable, and will definitely improve with a few more years.

Likely past its prime, still quite enjoyable. Good minerality and acidity, light fruit of apples, nectarines, and something else I just can't get*. Beautiful color. If you have this, drink up!

*Thanks to BLCarter3, it's ginger.

2015 Myriad Cellars Syrah Halcon Vineyard Yorkville Highlands
A fruit forward wine made from a cool climate site. Clearly picked a few weeks later than the Halcon wines. Defined by blackberry, blueberry, hints of lavender, white pepper and a bit of iron. The savory components are most pronounced on the finish: roast meats, bacon fat.

8/23/20, 7:59 PM - No decant, but drank over about four hours. Paired with Flannery sausages and roasted potatoes: simple, just to accompany the wine. Delicious, but still so primary.

Absolut inte för ung. Snygg, komplex och lite kryddig näsa. Varm och lätt sötfruktig, vilket är ok. Men där finns en alkoholhetta (årgången?) som drar ned betyget något. Men bra längd, över medium.
  • blcarter3 commented:

2/9/20, 9:42 AM - From google translate: Certainly not too young. Stylish, complex and a little spicy nose. Warm and slightly sweet fruity, which is ok. But there is an alcohol cap (vintage?) that pulls down the grade slightly. But good length, over medium.
