The last review was overly harsh. DRdans review had valid points. It’s an upfront wine with a smaller backside. It’s a touch too smooth in the middle pallet for our liking. At $30 bucks lots of competition out there.

Stunning complexity and immense pleasure. It may be the best domestic chardonnay I've ever had.

Medium to dark purple with a hint of garnet. Barnyard fruit. Prune on farm with mushrooms and leather. Pallet of prune and rasin cherry. Decanted to help the high acid. Tannins are medium but light. Should drink sooner than later.

We've had many bottles over many vintages of what is usually a stellar Rhone wine blend (OK, it's Languedoc, but they are Rhone varietals). This one tasted a little "off" both the first and second night, so I am thinking it might be a slightly-flawed bottle or lesser vintage year. Have another bottle, so we will give it another try. Normally, this is a 88-90 for us and goes well with food, this one fell short...no depth, hard to pick out the varietals, a bit flat, maybe old? Again, we'll try another bottle.
  • mats13 commented:

10/4/18, 11:11 PM - Might I suggest marking it NR if you think the bottle was bad. Your low score skews the overall score for this wine - shouldn't a score of 84 generally mean vinegary undrinkable?

  • mats13 commented:

10/9/18, 5:40 PM - Thanks for the explanation - I had not seen thee rating system set up by Eric before, so that is helpful. It is different than, say, the RP or Vinous systems which are quite similar to each other.

On the palette it’s a very tough wine at the start and is inky, with black sweet fruit, crushed rocks, black olives, herbs, smoked meat, blueberries.
Its really good and need some time to open up, but if you give it time you will be awarded. A massive wine that I want to drink more of. Good length

The 2016 Pax Hillside Sonoma is the greatest Syrah I have ever tasted. Old world in character. The smokey, fatty, peppery bacon smell and then taste is intoxicating. Herbs, spices, and violets round out the palate. Mouth watering tannins are strong, but in harmony with the rest of the wine’s components. The peaty finish lasts for minutes. I am not sure this is a 100-pointer, but this is a wine I am still thinking about a day later.

This wine is Garnache, Carinena and Vidadillo. I think some important things to know are that it was aged for 36 months in a mix of new and used French oak. That's some serious brew time in wood barrels!! Now before I drank this I let it decant in my Riedel Apple decanter for an hour. Then I poured a glass in a Vinum XL Cabernet glass. The nose is incredible and taste matches quite well with the nose. I'll just say read all reviews with a grain of salt. Every person's palette is different but for mine this wine was and is downright fine. As to the cork question that people have raised, I don't care. If the wine was spoiled I guess I would but I trust that this wine is 12 years old and it's drinking might fine! Try it out. Judge for yourself.

Drank over 2 days with initial 2 hour decant. Deep ruby colour with purple hue. Modern style wine showing ripe black fruits (2010 was a great vintage with well ripening grapes - this might seen a bit too much sun). On the mid palate it falls a bit short but makes up with a long finish which I contribute to its generous oak treatment. Could not detect any significant difference on the second day. Overall a nice wine I could see myself bringing as a gift to some of our none wino friends which prefer less acidic wines. Comes in a heavy bottle - first appearances count.

This is a dark and haunting syrah. Black currant with blackberry and cherry. fully surrounded by the smoke of a morning after campfire. Generally smooth with a generous amount of fruit throughout. Strong acidity on the mid-palette. Firm tannins finish. Do not believe this wine will become more integrated but time will allow secondary characteristics to develop.

Consistant with my previous tasting note to seeming. However, I admit that I underrated this wine fairly. Not that riper and sweeter than I remember. Still the wine has fine structure, acceptable acidity and fresh red fruits core. Moreover, it is getting complexity as days go by. Although it is not equal to great vintages like the 2010 or 2015, I think it is good enough. 93-94 pts.

Overly ripe and fruit-forward to my taste. Grenache is dominant, with notes of strawberries and red fruit, in this CDP. Well-made and in many ways elegant, especially after several hours of decanting, but this is admittedly poor value at nearly $100. Beaucastel CDPs offer so much more, in my opinion and tasting experience.

Very youthful. I'd recommend letting it nap for another 5+ years. But given air there was obvious quality and it was drinkable even with its wall of tannin.
  • mats13 commented:

8/14/17, 6:33 PM - A little of both to be honest. If you can wait longer, I would give it 5 years, but if 2019 is your year, give it 2-3 hours of air minimum. The fruit wasn't singing and the tannins were tough to get around.

Blend of Merlot 84%, Cabernet Franc 14%, Cabernet Sauvignon 2%. 14.5%. Medium plus bodied. It's already 'going.' No fresh fruit, no oak, no spices, just some oxidized grape juice with cooked dried jujube note. Short finish. The wine has been kept in cellar over a year since it was imported from France. Definitely not flawed but very disappointing. (Unexpectedly it gets just a little better on day 3, when it's 87+/100)

2/15/17, 4:09 PM - If you feel the wine would benefit from cellaring, why not wait on the score - which seems unduly low to me. It seems you are punishing the wine for not being ready instead of yourself for making a poor decision in drinking it too early (!). I actually don't mean that with disrespect, but a really low score of 85 seems a little misleading to me esp if you look at the community's ratings for every other vintage of this wine. Just my humble opinion.

Has it really been three years since I last drank one of these? Pop and pour, medium weight, with a silky mouth feel and a 10 second front palate finish. Enjoyable with a variety of foods, but is less suited for beef than Italian, Indian, or even seafood at this phase of it's life. While enjoyable, wouldn't necessarily even know this is an Oz shiraz. Drink during 2017.

Far exceeded my expectations. Decanted wine after setting vertical for a few days. Some chunky sediments along with a few fine tartrate crystals in the bottle. Easy to decant out. On the nose new car leather with a hint of berry. Palate was dominated by bright raspberry with some tart cherry. There are still some tannins but not too much but also are not particularly smooth.

Not much nose, but the wine delivers on the palate with elegant cherry, cranberry, and hints of strawberry up front with dried herbs emerging mid-palate. The finish shows more fresh cherry fruit on a silky frame and lots of terroir that makes these wines so distinctive. Likely peaking now, it will probably slowly fade over the next decade.

1995 Caramino Riserva - This medium-minus bodied wine has an ruby color that bricks somewhat and lightens toward the edges. The nose was distinct with coffee, mocha, aged balsamic and port-like aromas. On the palate, there is a hint of chewy tannins though much of the fruit has dissipated. The finish is fairly short. Coravined for this taste, didn't give it much time to breathe. I'll probably just pull the cork sometime soon rather than keep checking in - the wine is 22 years old after all and I don't see it improving from here.

Now this has an expressive nose. Lots of dark cherry fruit, savory herbs. Argenina has a very different soil type and just a touch lower than Grosso Sanesi. Being lower during the day it gets more warm than Grosso Sanesi bu when the sun goes down the diurnal change really brings greater perfume to the nose. The kind of soil here is a volcanic soil. A yellow stone.

And on the palate good acidity and back bone with enough fruit to back it up. Quite fiercely young and delicious stuff.
