Heidi's Crew at St Geneive Minneapolis "quarterly". CV,KB,LI,SS,CS&DD. Tonight was outstanding & so much so, the group voted to meet monthly going fwd. StG's menu tonight screamed Burgundy so that didn't hurt. My btl flighted with Candace's placid ethereal & mesmerizing '02 Dom P2. Quite a challenging flight for a new release and yet the '12 Comte rose to occasion with its signature surreal blend of, tamed energy, complex & pristine fruit, mineral and intensity. The Dom won out with its overall undeniable sense of harmony and "how do they do it" supple classiness. Elixir for the Gods & when the stars align, mere mortals like me. Lucky to be drinking a glass of both wines tonight. Especially, the '02 P2!

I had higher hopes for this. I'll admit, I was swooned into buying one to try because of the cool old-style label but also because of Envoyer's tasting note for it. 100yr old vines was intriguing! As someone else noted it lacked some expected intensity and complexity. A very solid $10-$15 rose' I paid $26 for. If I had loved the wine, the btl might have made it on cool wine btl shelf:).

Brad's Winner Winner Zuni chicken dinner night. BB,KB,ML & I. Thanks Brad! My btl. First thing I smelled was dill pickles & it never dissipated in my glass. Others didn't seem to notice. No, I didn't have a Burger for lunch. Palate was more appealing than the nose! Red fruit, earth & spice on the palate. 13% alc 85pts Nose / 91pts palate. Average...89pts. My least fav wine of the night.

Heidi's Redux at local fav STG. CV, BE,KB,DD,LI & JG. What a night! Based on the way this started out on opening at home a few hours before leaving for STG this turned out to evolve perfectly into my ultimate WOTH. I had high hopes for this coming from the highly touted '05 vintage & Gevrey's top Grand Cru Vyd . Even still, out of the gates, it was showing little promise other than not being flawed :). My first thought, oh no another stubborn '05!?!? So I immediately double decanted and slow-oxed till leaving. Fortunately, this wine was just playing w/ me. By the time we got to drinking it at StG it was utterly drop dead gorgeous! The fruit was pristine & delish. and yet there was a sense of layers of forest floor, mineral, spice & other harmonics. Complexity! One of the best experiences I've ever had w/ Grand Cru Burgundy. Delighted it turned out so awesome! A great combo of power & finesse. Only problem, I bought only 1 a few years back. This btl tonight is the Chambertin I've always dreamt of in my head. Massive power, length and intensity balanced by amazing fruit, soil & spice. Probably my best ever btl of Chambertin? 98+

Only been to Switzerland once back in 2001with my wife & then 2 high school kids but what beautiful landscape! We spent a a couple nights in the village of Murren in the summer and hiked near the Eiger. Breathtaking! Loved taking the train through Switzerland from Austria on our way to France.

3/26/24, 10:21 AM - Thanks for reaching out essconsults and sharing your passion for Burgundy.
Well, 05 certainly joined 99 as one of the more stubborn vintages IMO. Looking back at my TNs, 10 of 15 '05 RBs I tasted since 2020 got scores of 93+ ... from me. Before that most were getting 87-91 from me. I'm not Burgundy Al though :). I tend to score higher than he does.

I'm very gung-ho on 2010s in their youth which I've so far pretty much universally admired. Now, I'm just trying to let my remaining '10s get to at least 2025+ before drinking more them, if possible. I rarely go deeper than 3btls of any vintage so I really appreciate using CT to avoid drinking all 3 too early.

At 68 / 69 in August I'm trying to back off buying more red Burgs and see if I can reduce my cellar size enough to eliminate off-site storage hassle. And, maybe even give my out of warranty, liver a break!

3/27/24, 8:48 AM - Funny, I'm lucky in that I have no mobility issues whatsoever. I've climbed 4 mountains with guides but my last was Fall 2019. I've since had my heart checked since a younger sister had open heart surgery for blockages. No symptoms but I too had some & got 2 stints in August. Going to Glacier in August with Nita and our adult kids & grand kids. Plan to do some 10-mile 3000 ft elevation gain hikes but nothing requiring a guide. My big passion (obsession) since fly fishing the Montana's Maddison River in Sept 2022 is fly fishing! So I'll do as much of that as Nita will allow on the trip. For now, I still feel like a 40yr old knock-on wood! Even with a does of reality in August :). Hard to accept I'm an old guy to everyone under 65:)

Keep exploring and enjoying your cellar! I recently bought a 2019 Barthod Chambolle village that I loved. Plan to grab ...3 more. I do admire the 2019s I've had so far.

They dialed back the upfront red apple a bit this time. More stony & a little more toast. As always great concentration and more depth than almost any other champagne near its $34 price point. A great direct import from K&L. Like it better than the Bonville but that's also good from K&L at the same price point.
  • chablis28 commented:

3/10/24, 4:54 AM - Thanks shrages! Been quite a while since I've had one of these. K&L stopped shipping to MN a good while ago. I agree with everything you said. The Bonville is available in the Twin Cities at Total Wine but the price is high and I'm not a TW fan anyway. The Bonville is refreshing but pretty simple. Better BdBs for the money like R&L Legras. I am going to seek the Arnold out again once I verify that K&L is shipping here again as I heard recently.

Same btl as rocknroller. Nita & I along with Kevin & Vicki to further celebrate our 45th wedding anni at The Kenwood in Minneapolis. This is a legend in the making and thus there's a tendency to come in with 110pt expectations. There is still so much power to unwind & depth yet to emerge but, if you take a breath and sit with this through the evening you realize it's already amazing. The concentration, intensity and purity here is something to behold. I only have one and its wonderful to check in on this masterpiece! I'll do my best to make sure Kevin & Vicki are available when we open our last. I only open wines like this for momentous moments like Nita's & my 45th and, when possible, in the Tetons after a hike, climb or a great day fly fishing! A truly special wine only for special occasions, for me. Thanks guys!

My fav white Burg producer, bar none! Off the wine list at The Restaurant At Hotel Wailea in Maui. Clos de la Barre is a Lafon village Monopole from vines going back to the 50s. As always the fruit here is beyond reproach and the essence of purity. One taste and you know its Lafon who makes the most refined white Burgs on earth. So utterly classy and yet such intensity & concentration. Amazing bead of minerality perfectly compliments its pristine citrus & stone fruit flavors. The nose amplifies palate and adds a pleasant whiff of hazelnut. so lucky to find this underpriced on wine list for a change. A modest 13% alc! Credit to their Sommelier for chilling this perfectly and serving it in a stellar Burg glasses to boot! Great wine, great night on our first dinner out in Maui! The setting was gorgeous. Mahalo!

2/19/24, 2:17 PM - A steal! $205 on the list for 2020 and they didn’t list it as Clos des Barr. They may not have known the distinction between it and straight Meursault? They had a great list but most over priced as usual.

Decanted w/ dinner only an hour away to maximize air. Sips & sniffs proved immediately promising. Served in the high 50s/ low 60s. Semi translucent ruby red. Love the damp forest floor & vibrant berries on nose. The forest floor carries over to an elegant & vibrant palate where you pick up assorted cherries and raspberry fruit, spice, mineral and that damp minerally aspect I associate with a forest after a rain. My last of 2 btls. I'd lost interst in this producer after some price jumps on the village and CSJ but I'd go for some more Bourgogne if I spot them. Another excellent Burg from the delightful 2015 vintage! 92+

2/19/24, 2:12 PM - I will give this more thought when back home. Off the top though I still see value in anything at any level from Chevillon for reds. I love Fevre Chablis up and down. Too bad the bargain pricing is over but Fevre delivers. I also enjoy Arnox Robert’s Ca Chards with a year or 3 past release. Trout Gulch is great. Watson is often great too.

decanted for 4 hours. dark garnet in color. a fairly muted nose of cherry and rose. on the palate, the wine shows sweet cherry, raspberry and strawberry. the tannins are somewhat resolved and the acidity is still quite high. linear across the palate with a long finish. wonderful mouthfeel and phenolic ripeness. drinking beautifully but surprisingly still primary. not a lot of secondary characteristics at this point which was somewhat disappointing. if you have any of this, give it another 5 to 10 years before you open the bottle.

A fun btl from the Cote d' Auxerre a region nearby to Chablis with many of the same terroir traits that even manages to top Chablis for value at the AOC level. The name doesn't flow across the tongue as easily for most of us as Chablis but this little btl was marked with the same chiseled minerality along with touches of citrus, stone fruit, salinity & faint herbs. I'd be hard pressed to pick this out from Chablis blind. Paid a paltry $17 for this little gem. Drinks like $25+. 12.5% alc. Wish I had grabbed more than one fromy "go to" online store Envoyer. Said to be both fermented & raised in stainless steel tanks explaining its purity and energy.

Opened alongside a 17 PCYM Meursault Genevrières & the 17 PCYM Corton-Charlemagne. On any given day this could just as easily have been my top choice of the 3. Also, very ethereal & elegant like my top choice tonight, the CC but there's something about Corton Charlemagne I guess that makes it the wine of kings :). Almost 4 years since the last bottle. Slowoxed for 10 hrs the 2 more in a decanter. What an explosive nose of cherries, cinnamon sugar, rust, old leather, cloves and a bit of candied orange. The wine is in total balance and shows a beautiful profile of crunchy red fruit, bitter orange and cherries. Almost weightless as it dances across your pallet. Really amazing. Still very youthful and I’m sure it will evolve over the course of dinner and for years to come. A few hours on - the wine has totally shutdown. It become opaque and the nose has almost disappeared. The pallet has tightened up and shut down. This is such a baby and I’m thinking that it will need many more years to unfold. I won’t touch another bottle for at least 5 years. But my feeling is that there is something special here that just needs time to reveal itself.

Opened to celebrate Nita's & my 45th Anni w/ dinner at Ciao Bella in Edina MN. This is in a great spot & unlikely to slip anytime soon. Semi translucent ruby red w/ bricking on the edge. The bouquet is an appealing range of; red berries, forest floor & spice. Palate is placid, elegant & caressing. All its elements reverberate on the palate further enhancing its charm & intrigue. There's a sense of inner mouth perfume too. I slow-oxed for 2hrs in my Riedel Burg & btl before leaving for Ciao Bella. There we enjoyed this near cellar temp in our Riedel Burgs I brought along. Tonight w/ Nita's homemade Pizza. Well at age 17/18 I remain pleased I never added addl vintages of this. Records say I still have 2 more. Ugh! For me, this is dense & lacking any sense of refinement. It does have some complexity but just doesn't rock me. I gave it plenty of air with a 3hr slow-ox but I should have decanted it as its loaded w/ sediment. Thought I could manage the sediment with careful same directional pours but I still ended up tossing the last 2-3 inched in the btl out. Hoping my records are wrong and the last 2btls listed in CT no longer exist :). I remain a Chianti lover of many basic classico but not these more expensive cuvees.

Now, I have to slow down my QPR buying and get used to the idea of drinking some of my higher end stuff more often. Even during the week :). I have many really good btls in their mid-drinking windows but, I'm still reluctant to open them most days between Sunday & Thursday :). And, I lean too much towards wanting to open them only around my wine geek buddies vs family.

A gorgeous wine, the 2016 Cerbaiona exudes class and refinement, offering a fascinating interplay of terroir and deft winemaking. The nose centers on red currents and pomegranate, subtle spices and barest hints of praline. In the mouth the fruit is ripe without being at all overripe, framed by gentle acidity and soft tannins, Nothing overdone here: the nose is exuberant without feeling clumsy, the palate shows a taut balance, without seeming at all heavy or fruity, and the endless finish reveals layers of minerality without seeming saline. Bravo!

The winemaker prefers that his wines not be given numerical scores, but it is my habit to score wines to remind myself of my response to the wine. Right now, 97 if you give this ample time to breath (in my case, 12 hours in decanter). With less air the wine may be a bit closed. Down the road, could easily attain 98 or perhaps even 99 at peak, which I believe will be around age 12-15.

Well, if you want to enjoy this, give it a lot of air and serve in the 50s - very low 60s. Do not let it warm to "room temp" unless you have a high tolerance for alc. I've mostly given up on CDP but I do have about 25 btls left in my cellar and because of positive experiences with old Pegau bought some 16s. I opened this Christmas Eve with our adult "kids" who routinely drink more modern, higher-octane reds themselves. I gave it a 3 hour decant. Served after 30 minutes back in the frig to chill it down. Drank pretty well, in the usual "pay little attention to the wine", holiday environment w/ our two amped grandsons (6&9) eager to open presents. Left over pours last night served at room temp were quite disappointing. Last night, the alc was crushing the wine. Call it 93pts on Christmas Eve and 86pts last night. Label says 14%. Taste more like 16%. I'll try the next one in 2027+.

I made a note on another birth year wine - the 1998 Domaine de Chevalier - that talks about how, when it comes to my birth vintage, my preference for left bank Bordeaux shifts south towards Margaux and Pessac-Léognan. I’ve never had a wine prove a point more than the 1998 Château La Mission Haut-Brion. This wine is truly ethereal. It’s everything we love about Graves and more. The nose was alluring, leveling out the quintessentially Graves smokiness with a good amount of leather, black cherries, blackcurrant and a hint of licorice. The palate, though, was enthralling. A journey that has spices and herbaceousness across each phase, the upfront brought us in with its rich blackcurrant and tart red cherry medley prior to cedar wood and a hint of minerality coming in during the mid-palate and finish. The wine was both silky and mouth coating, amplified by the bottle’s amazing acidity and intensity. I have zero doubts in the longevity of this wine. 30 years, 40 years - you name it. This was singing. WOTN.

Our local wine group holiday private dinner for 22 @ St Geneive Minneapolis. Said to come from vines replanted back in 1981/1982 by longtime winemaker Jeffrey Patterson. Legend has it the original vines were a suitcase clone from Chateau Margaux. Decanted 2-1/2 hrs before leaving for dinner and removed the cork again on arrival. Started drinking this around 3hrs into the dinner as one of the last wines tonight. Such a graceful finessed, super fresh Cab tonight! Generous aromas wafted from my Riedel Burg glass in waves of dark fruit, cigar, cedar & florals. The palate has that weightless classy Margaux like elegance and finesse displaying rich but always, energetically fresh dark cherry, raspberry, licorice, more cedar, tobacco leaf and herbs along with many other nuances. In a word, this rocked! 13.5% alc. Flighted w/ Brian's lovely but youthfully tannic '04 Leoville Poyferre. Putting aside structure, more similarities than differences between the 2 btls. The Mt Eden Estate Cab is one of Ca's best and still a decent value vs. many CA Cabs. Dang, my last. Will buy more 10s if I spot any!

Thanksgiving Week 2023; 11/19/2023-11/24/2023: Our selection. Decanted one hour, served chilled before dinner. Pale straw color. Amazing nose that kept giving off different aromas with every sniff. Lemon curd, florals, baked pears, wet rocks, fresh cut grass, sea breeze. On the palate it has medium body and plenty of acidity. Saline and slightly bitter. A wonderfully complex, ageable, and delicious wine. Fantastic value at around $45. Would love to try this in 5-10 years.

Selvapiana's basic Chianti Rufina classification is very transparent, balanced and loaded with Sangiovese goodness with every sniff & sip! Bravo... as usual! Conterno vs Rinaldi; 11/4/2023-11/5/2023: The '08 Brunate is a super sweet, exotic, perfumed expression of Nebbiolo. The combination of the Rinaldi style and the '08 vintage produced a wine that is almost too sweet and giving, something that was apparent tasting this next to the '08 Monfortino but not when I've had a glass of this wine on its own. On initial pour, the '08 Brunate was mindblowing and seemed to be the wine of the night, but we frankly tired of it by the end of the evening, while the Monfortino continued to improve in the glass.

The nose was super perfumed and exotic, with the distinct combination of blue, purple, and red fruit and floral tones I find in many vintages of Rinaldi Brunate, and in the '08 I also found more exotic notes of orange peel and other tropical fruits. On the palate, the same hard-candy like red, blue, and purple fruit and floral tones appeared along with orange peel and roasted meats. It is such a dense wine flavor-wise, but it's all packed into a medium to light bodied frame, with no perception at all of tannins.
  • chablis28 commented:

Ruby, with a hint of bricking on the rim. Delicate perfumed nose; open blackcurrant/cassis with a bit of rose/florality. Searing acidity which is perhaps not a surprise; tannins are very well integrated but make their presence felt slightly on the finish. Fruit perhaps tends towards red. No pencil lead for me but certainly tertiary notes of cigar/leather starting to arrive. All in all it's a tiny bit mean; nose is incredible, though.

Heeding other recent notes I decanted this for 4-1/2hrs prior to dinner & slowly but surely this became more pleasurable as the day went on. I started sipping in earnest a couple hours prior to dinner and had to be careful to leave us a couple good pours each with Nita's homemade deep dish. This producer got on my radar a few years ago but I only started buying with the 2016 release. A very wise decision as tonight's btls was one of the best BdMs I've ever had. The only risk here is if more classically styled BdM fans jump on board this could be priced out of my reach in a year or 3. The depth, pristine fruit & vibrance is outstanding. I'm a Johnny come lately but better late than never. 14.5% on label is scary but I had a hard time noticing it in my glass. So after a quick taste test on opening, I decided to give it a 2hr decant b4 serving w/ our cast iron pan seared Sockeye. This helped but I still think this needs at least 3 more years to hopefully reveal more layers & achieve complete silkiness. Enjoyable but there's a real sense of resistance to showing all of it cards, yet. Sort of like trying to land a determined big Brown trout only to have it snap off.

My first of 2 btls. Opened 2hrs prior to dinner & decided to slow-ox in my Riedel Burgs & btl the rest of the way. Deep semi opaque ruby color. Aromatic from the get go w/ enticing berry, sense of damp forest floor & spice. Palate is expansive & intense with raspberry, mineral, more spice and again that damp forest floor thing. The forest floor might be attributed to the oak but if so, its a very positive oak thing rather than the masking vanilla I often find in young Jadot reds. This reminds me somewhat of Dujac MSDs. I really dug this tonight. Only knock is the tannins while far from oppressive need a few more years to fully resolve. I really love this producer. A '14 Gevrey Chambertin back in 2020 was also stellar. I also think 2013 might be a sleeper vintage. Said to be from 70yr old vines. 13% alc. 92+

8/13/23, 9:14 AM - Great to hear from you tward! Drinking windows are just an educated guess. CT helps a lot but still so many variables. Especially, how the btl traveled and was stored before it got to you & I. I literally drive all my local btls straight home and put right into one of my 3 cabinets if I'm planning to age them for anytime. My btls from Ca retailers, who knows :). Its interesting how many (in theory) expired drinking window btls get offered by retailers like Envoyer & many enjoyed regardless. I took a gamble and bought 2 basic cuvee Inglenook Cabs from '91 through Envoyer. Hopefully at least one still rocks :) The fills looked great.

8/13/23, 10:48 AM - Thanks tward. Yep, Gregs a reputable and knowledgeable person. I'm sure he does his best. I mostly dabble in old stuff under $200 and most of those under $100. I've been tempted by aged $200 plus btls but too fearful of bad luck vs cost :).

Old Guys lunch on Ciao Bella's lovely patio (CV, DM, TS, JV, DD, LS, KB). 80 degrees Friday & 45 degrees Saturday :). We got super lucky Friday by MN standards. My btl and quite disappointing in its awkward current state. This was fricken beautiful 4yrs ago on release!?!? I decanted it 3hrs before leaving for Ciao Bella and removed the cork 45 mins again before drinking. From my Burg glass. Once again finding the right drinking window and ideal air for Barolo is as elusive as catching an old Brown Trout on dry fly. For me anyhow:). If I scored it now it would be 85-87pts. Rough ride on the structure & fairly closed.

Dinner with Wayne at Kevin's. Local Twin Cities beloved Chef Don Saunders killed it for our crew at Kevin's place. 11 of us were treated to a night with Kevin's spry 91yr old dad who delighted everyone! Wayne Loves Cabernet & BDX so we had some potentially monumental reds to compliment a great night while 30 below MN temps whipped at the door. Thanks Kevin! WB,KB,VB,CV,DD,JV,BB,ML,LI,CS & SS. Candace's btl. Semi opaque ruby. This is a big concentrated red but showing very elegantly with plenty of depth. Maybe a smidge less precise than Candace's '83 PL also called into duty tonight? Loved it none the less. Plenty of life and some upside still likely. Thanks Candace!

    7/20/23, 11:47 AM - Greetings Juliansi!

First off, what time is it where you're at! 1:40 / 13:40 PM in MN USA.

All of these older btls like the 83 Mouton need to be treated as one offs since it has 40yrs under its belt. They all vary. I would open it 3hours ahead, take a taste and decide if its PnP or needs any time open.

General advice for older wines is open 30 minutes to an hour before. But btls do vary so it may not be the best advice.

Also, I like to stand them up a day or 2 ahead tilted with sediment collecting under the back lable and ask everyone to pour from the same direction to keep the sediment under control.

Enjoy, should be awesome wine if it was stored well for the past 40.

    Cheers

7/21/23, 4:59 AM - Just a quick note. Heading to local river for some trout in a few minutes. Decant is the ultimate if the wine will take the air and you have the time. Makes pouring bullet proof :).

Cork stain indicating slight leak. Acrid smells on the nose with initial brackish red fruit on the tongue. After 2 hours the nose came out to play with scents of high pitched violets, fresh cut berry, iodine, and stony earth. Magical transformation of the palate revealing silky red raspberry fruit cut with filed-off, granular tannin and bright acidity. Longer finish of brooding piquant red berry and iron. Lovely wine breaking through after a rough start.
