Couldn't tell you what this was supposed to taste like hit it was very enjoyable...lots of apple cider and fig on the nose, plenty lively on the palate with nice acidity. Would definitely want to seek out and try some other massandra's in the future.

So I rarely write tasting notes unless something sticks out about a wine in either an extraordinarily good or odd way. This posting definitely falls into the odd category. Lots of smoke and roasted game on the nose but with something greenish about it (and I have never seen anything green in any martinelli wine I have had). The more I dig into the nose, the more I want to say it reminds me of a smoked salmon or smoked trout. It is like green mesquite meets cedar plank salmon. Now you might think I have already had a few too many based on this review but, alas, this is the first glass of the evening. The wine isn't flawed in a technical sense, just way over oaked and I look back at how my palate has changed in the few years since I purchased this style of wine. Going to enjoy it for what it is sitting outside by a fire so it just fits in as part of the scene!

From magnum, unfortunately rather closed from this format. Nose not giving up a whole lot, tannins still rather firm. Been open for nearly 5 hours at this point and still hasn't really budged. If you have this in mag format, I would sit on it longer, one thing I can get is plenty of structure and i think it has enough fruit last.

Corked! Really disappointing cause you could tell this had the makings of a monster wine underneath...

After a prior disappointing showing this wine finally came around. The oak dominated at first but after about 9 hours open it really started to show...with plenty of air this wine is definitely ready.

Took my advice from prior tasting note and this wine showed great. Opened 7 hours before consuming and drank over next 5 hours. Stellar wine.

Fantastic bottle, drinking great now. Had at Revel on Little W12th street in nyc with lunch and they were kind enough to waive the corkage for the 3 bottles we brought.

Past it's prime, same as last bottle.

Thin on fruit but not all gone, loads of green olive and some mint.

Not quite as good as the bottle a few months ago but I think it's as much the food pairing as the wine. Great nose, pure cherry fruit, just a touch too much acid.

Wow! this wine tasted great and that was the worst part about it. The nose was intense, giving tar, menthol, rose oil, forest and much more...amazing wine, will need to seek out another bottle.

One dimensional wine that was blown away by the 97 beringer pvt reserve that followed. Score from early 08 reflects company and evening more than true reflection if wine.

This is in primetime. I was afraid it would lose structure as it sat in the glass and i was definitely wrong, it actually gained.

definitely what i expected from this wine which is both good and bad. Great fruit, an almost dessert like sweetness at the end of a meal (i can't imagine drinking anything after this wine). A bit hot with such high alcohol. Drink at the right point of the evening and it's a great wine, drink at the wrong time or with the wrong food and it will overpower everything else.

Great nose but only started to come to life on palate after 2+ hours in the glass. Recommend cellaring for a while or decanting for an extended period before drinking.
