Tasted at Bernard's, Ridgefield, CT - Xavier Monnot lunch (with Xavier Monnot). All the Monnot wines are domaine bottled. Dark and deep, black cherry and cola aromas and flavors are supported by spice notes in this dense, smoky, very ripe Pinot. This vineyard is a monopole premier cru owned by the Monnot family, planted with 50 year old vines. Xavier explained that, to avoid the foxiness common in Maranges, he only pumps over the fermenting wine, rather than punching down, and harvests this wine, though the vineyard is farther south than his other sites, usually a week or two later.

    12/28/12, 12:43 PM - Squire: "foxiness" refers to a musty/moldy aromatic/flavor component in a wine. "Monopole" is what the french in Burgundy call classified vineyards that are owned by a single producer, so in essence, a monopoly is correct.
