Massive wine from a bizarrely hot vintage. The color is starting to show brick/orange on the rim and still a dense garnet in the center. After a half hour of air, there are copious pronounced aromas of dense smoke, wood, wet earth, aged balsamic vinegar, roasted cherry and red currant with hints of clove and ground allspice. The palate shows an upfront whack of raisin, cried cherries, dried cranberries, red currant, paprika?, and cherry pie filling, which echoes on the long finish. Still has good ripe tannins and great acidity.

A bit closed at first, with very little in the way of bouquet; with lots of air, begins to show aromas and flavors of butterscotch, cream, butter, white fleshy fruits as well as tropical fruit notes. The finishes is of cream and over-ripe pear with baking spices. Very long and well balanced. Still has some life left!

Very deep purple color with a narrow brick rim fading to clear. Aromas of dusty blackberry and graphite with hints of powdered spice lead into a soft, elegant palate, silky smooth with mild, slightly herbaceous tannins and a long gravelly finish. Excellent to drink over the next few years.

Some seepage under the capsule although the cork was pristine. Lovely garnet color with some orange at the wide rim. Aromas of Asian spices and fresh moist earth are joined by seductive red cherry and black truffle. Supple texture with soft cherry compote flavored and bright citrusy acids lead into a slightly metallic finish with solid tannin structure.

Still young with bold and deep color and intense aromas of cassis and creme de mure and layers of sandalwood and graphite. The robust flavored on the palate are harmoniously balanced with a caressing, silky smooth texture that screams for another mouthful. Delicious now and can age for another decade.

At first, the notes of oxidation were overpowering, but with a good hour in the glass they faded into the background allowing notes of powdered wet granite, fig newton, pears in syrup, honeysuckle, under-ripe apple, marzipan, layer after layer of unctuous, viscous fruits and flowers, constantly evolving. Rich and broad on the palate, with stone fruits, minerals, and echoes of all the aromas and more. The finish is an entire quarry of crushed rocks and lemon custard which goes on and on. Very cool stuff - a gift from a customer.

intensely aromatic - packed with raisins and dried cherries, chocolate, and sweet hard candies. On the palate it's silky smooth, with incredibly ripe and sweet dried fruits - all the raisins, dates, prunes, cherries, raspberries you can handle, with power and finesse. At 17% it's not shy, but remains well balanced throughout. Almost port, without the brandy, this is just gorgeous for a cold November evening.

No score because this wine is just so far out there. Garnet core fading to a brick-orange rim. Good legs (13.5% alc). Nose is deep and very strong for a 35+ year old wine, with tobacco and cocoa nibs, fireplace ash, charcoal, and dried cherry and cranberry - a good cigar dipped in cocoa powder. On the palate, it's soft at first, but in the middle it spreads across the mouth with all kinds of dried berries, dried herbs, smoked meats, tobacco, mushroom, sandy soil, and a spiky nettle note. One of the greatest and most complex Chardonnays I have ever tasted - from California or anywhere else. At first it's a bit lean, even at over 5 years in the bottle, but with some air it begins to show layers upon layers of cream, butter, honeysuckle, butterscotch, lemon meringue, meyer lemon, granny smith apple, bakers yeast, pecan, pastry dough, and so much more. Amazing stuff, and still young.

Smuggled in from Paris in May, this is dense and chewy, an infant with loads of potential - in a decade or more could be a classic. Decanted for two hours and still tight, with powerful aromas of black currant, wet gravel, smoke, anise, cigar box and tobacco, cedar and autumnal woodsy notes and lots more. The flavors are rich and complex, true to the nose, with ripe tannins and excellent acidity. The finish goes on and on for minutes. Paid about 42 Euros duty free - a steal for the vintage.

Very deep purple color all the way to the rim; syrah-like in appearance. Soft ripe plum, ripe blueberry and black pepper aromas and flavors in a medium bodied frame. Could take a little chill very well. An easy drinking wine and a nice change of pace for the Pinot or Syrah drinker.

Young, but soooo delicious! Tightly wound red cherry liqueur and spices that upon up after a lot of aeration to show layers upon layers of cola spices, fennel and anise, super ripe black cherries, notes of freshly turned earth and lots more. Needs some time, but hard to resist now.

Deep amber color in it's core yet showing some green notes on the rim - will it age forever? Incredibly seductive aromas of dried fruits and flowers layered with wildflower honey lead to a palate bursting with juicy sweet baked pear and apple tart, honey, caramel, toffee, walnut and pecan pie, and an amontillado note on the long, long, energizer bunny still going finish. If there is eiswein in heaven, it's this one.

Stumble through a black night with a garnet tone, the primeval forest in fall, cool and mysterious, wolves howling in the distance. Breath deeply of the damp earth, dried tobacco and autumn spices, with hints of dried plum and black berry bushes. Bathe in a refreshing stream of blackcurrant juices and cigarbox notes, layered with cedar and haunting echoes of charred wood. Am I in Pauillac or Napa here? Does it matter?

Beautiful deep golden color, with aromas of petrol, white flowers, and loads of overripe peach which overpower the subtle slate notes. The very sweet attack is well balanced by fresh acidity. Flavors of sautéed white fruits - grapes, peaches, pears - and honey dominate, but there are noticeable suggestions of wet slate. Very nice at this stage of evolution, but should improve for at least another decade.

tightly wound aromas of red currant and smoky roasted fennel which quickly evolve into framboise liqueur/raspberry jam. On the palate, it's very ripe, packed with raspberry, red currant, lingonberry and red licorice flavors with soft, plush tannins and moderate acidity. Very tasty now, but has the stuffing to go for a few years.

Deep and complex, with magnificent aromas of forest floor, autumn leaves, mushroom, balsamic vinegar, espresso, dried herbs, mint, roasted dark fruits, sawdust, oak and cedar, and vanilla. The palate shows all these flavors and then some, with good structure and ripe tannins. Raring to go - but will hold up for a few more years if you have the patience.

Fresh apricots and white peaches, cut white flowers, honeysuckle and toasted almond on the nose with some powdery spices (nutmeg?). Palate shows wet slate, fig, apricot, canned peaches in syrup, pears, and baked pastry dough, riverstones, herbs and refreshing acids. Finishes with a note of bitter almond and a hint of red clay. Intriguing.

Very young still, but lovely, with a charming green/gold color, aromas of fresh cut flowers, honeysuckle, mineral, white peach and bosc pear which lead into an expressive, high acid palate of white fruits and flowers shaded by slate notes. Finishes crisp and clean. Should broaden out a bit with some time in the cellar.

Starts off with lots of funky barnyard aromas which evolve after a few minutes into some pretty dried flowers, cherry, and dried spice notes with some interesting cola and leather. Complex and well balanced, but seems to be lacking the mid-palate elements to make it truly great. Pretty steep, too - might want to stick with Lynn Penner-Ash's other bottles.

Finishes a bit short and is a touch lacking in acidity - delicious nonetheless. Not one for long term aging, but a great guzzler now.

For a wine of fifteen years, this is incredibly dense and powerful in both the color and aromas - lots of cedar, smoke, white pepper, mint, grilled meat, pencil lead, and lots more. Every swirl of the glass released more and more nuances. On the palate, the attack is still dominated by acid and tannins, but the supple structure is seductive. A mouthful of intense cassis, blackberry, dark chocolate, smoke and wood, cigars, a cupboard full of spices, and so much more. Wouldn't say it's still a baby, but youthful, just entering adulthood. Still has years of life to go. Wow, wow, wow, wow, wow. On of the all time greats I've ever tasted, and I will lust for more.

Rusty garnet core to brick on the rim; aromas of (with a few minutes of airing) dried berries, cranberry, wet clat and sand, some gravel, dried spices and horse leather; in the mouth, it still shows some ripe tannins, good acidity and grip, medium body, lots of dried fruit and spice character, bitter tea and an echo of cigar smoke. Still alive and kicking. Would be awesome with a rack of lamb.

Still alive but fading fast. First impressions are of smoky cherries and cola spices, with cherry compote anise and some green weediness that fades quickly. A few moments of air in the glass, and the fruit begins to disappear, leaving a whisper of tart cherry and berry notes. On the palate, the fruit has blended into gentle earthiness, with hints of leathery dried fruit that are struggling to reach out. Elegant, but just over the hill. Dugat's vineyards are just above the village of Gevrey - this bottle was purchased in Beaune in 2003. If only I had drank it a couple of years ago...

Proof there is a god, and he loves Austrian wine. This stunning white from one of the world's rarest varietals is a deep golden color rivaling grand cru burgundies; the aromas explode from the glass with marzipan, vanilla cream, honeysuckle and white flowers, apricot, baked pear a hints of freshly ground nutmeg. On the palate, rich, creamy, buttery white fruits are supported by honeyed apricots, baked brie and salty pecorino which echo for minutes on the finish, alternating complex flavors. Amazing stuff, and second only to '02 Bienvenue-Batards-Montrachet from Girardin in my all time greats. Wow. wow. wow. wow.

An associate (dumbass) left this in his car overnight and the cork protruded, so we had to crack it and see if it was ok. Although way too young, this showed lovely aromatics of sweet black cherry and hints of barnyard dust. Shows very high acidity on the medium-bodied palate, with soft, ripe cherry and dried citrus peel flavors. Elegant, with very soft, mild tannins. Finishes with sour cherries and a touch of leather.

Aromas of smoky boysenberry and black cherry, with the sweet character of fresh blackberry jam. On the palate it's a bit shy at first, but as it opens it blossoms into violets, complex red and black berries, hints of wood underneath copious vanilla cream. A blend of Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvedre. Lacks the minerality typical of the Rousillon, but an excellent expression of the quality possible here.

Received an advance bottle via the importer - not released yet. Could be the best vintage of this outstanding wine yet - packed with explosive aromas of cassis and framboise, tobacco and leather, layer upon layer of toasted spices with highlights of violets and rose petals. Very viscous in the glass, with high glycerin and alcohol apparent in the legs, but balanced on the palate with very ripe cherry, blackberry, currant, raspberry, lingonberry and vanilla cream. Finishes with a long sweet-tart echo of fresh berry preserves, silky smooth, and incredibly delicious.

A good effort for estate bottled in Connecticut gewurztraminer, with aromas that start off with classic lychee and honeysuckle character and evolve into floral and petrol notes as well. Some noticable sweetness in the attack but finishes fairly dry, with an oily, rich texture. Finishes a bit short, but with a fair amount of mineral and acidity. Served with crab or lobster, this works well.
