White
2017 Copain Chardonnay Dupratt Vineyard Anderson Valley
Tasted over 2 hrs
-translucent pale gold
-subtle orchard fruit
-med/med+ acidity lends a proper tang to the finish, med/med- weight nicely ripe orchard fruit lightly spiced with a slightly honeyed sweet note that lingers through the fairly long finish accompanied by a touch of caramel
-quite good with excellent complexity, not a Chablis doppelganger like some of my favorite CA chardonnays but what it lacks in minerality it makes up for with complexity and power without weight

11/18/23, 10:15 AM - I really love Arnot-Roberts’ Trout Gulch and their Watson Ranch is not far behind for my taste.

-med acidity becomes evident at the finish, med/med+ weight soft textured blackberry dark fruits plum grapey with a bitter element accompanying the refined med tannins
-very primary but still pleasurable, should open up more in the next 3-5 years
  • Cote d'Or commented:

5/8/22, 7:25 PM - I don't have a lot of experience with Bierzos so just a guess on my part. Seemed to me a few years would allow for some more complexity and it seemed to have the structure to handle it.

This is terrific and unique. The expression is entirely new to me. While it shares facets with other wines I am unable to make a straight up comparison with any other grape. On top of that it's been raised 50% in barrel but I never would have guessed. So no clue how wood expresses in Godello. This is a lean, tensile, mineraled white. There is complexity in flashes but I think it needs some rest to open fully. Drank consistently over two nights but a bit more open on night two. Nose of citronella with a mineral sense that is almost metallic rather than stony. Some waxy lemon reminiscent of Marsanne. Flashes of florals. The palate has powerful limey acidity. Very focused, lean fruit. Like medium bodied but wrapped close to the acid that really lingers. Good things in this. Definitely going to leave that other bottle alone a few years. If this softens and opens it could be quite impressive. I can't imagine it's going to go south in the next decade regardless. A wine to pay attention to. Impressed. Lots of lees/sediment stuff in this.

8/27/21, 7:37 PM - Love your note on this. It seems you were pretty blown away as I was. Bierzo blancos are new to me but with this and the Perez Ultreia recently tasted, I'm thinking the Godello may be a seriously under-rated variety.

7/12/21, 7:40 PM - I tend to really like these (and Chablis) in their youth when they are so vibrant. So for me, this is drinking fantastically now. A-R's Trout Gulch chardonnays are absolutely fantastic with food, I think we paired this with a simple grilled chicken marinated with olive oil and fresh herbs, and grilled summer squash.

Pale garnet color.

This has taken on a darker and more earthy profile since last taste. Moldy strawberries, dark cherry, black tea, tobacco, moist forest floor, dried flowers, porcini mushrooms and dusty chalk.
It still has that lovely mouthwatering acidity and the tannins are resolving nicely. More fruit coming through on the palate with strawberry, dark cherry and plum with the tertiary aromas lurking in the background. Great length to the taste.

Having tasted several bottles of Il Frappato both young and with age I come to the conclusion that I prefer this wine young. Based on this bottle the wine is ready to drink now and will not improve with further aging.
  • Cote d'Or commented:

7/21/20, 7:07 PM - I agree. These are more interesting young. Thanks for the great note.

Tasted over 3 hrs; leakage and soft cork
-saturated med dark red purple with minimal clearing
-slightly roasted/torrefaction note accompanies very ripe berry/black fruit
-med acidity just enough to give vibrancy, med weight silky ripe dark fruit starting to take on some earthy/mature elements, ripe med/med- tannins, good length
-stylish classy Bourgogne not terribly affected by the apparent poor storage (or overfilling)
  • Cote d'Or commented:

8/17/19, 10:46 AM - Interesting, thanks for the info. Truchot bottles were often overfilled too, not sure if it was intentionally done for the same reason.

Deep cherry colored. Nose shows impressive depth of fruit (lots of red and black cherries, raspberries) along with red licorice, rose petals and earth. Dusty/light tannins with zippy acidity. Crunchy, tart cherries, raspberries, pomegranate, red apple peel - there is a ton of fruit in here, but also some spicy tobacco and rhubarb notes underneath. Light and accessible but not simple, I'll hold off on opening another for a few years if I can, though, as even this level of wine from Jouan deserves some time to evolve.
  • Cote d'Or commented:

4/23/19, 7:53 PM - I definitely get the red apple peel here too. Seem to pick it up fairly frequently with Jouan's wines. Lovely stuff.

Red
2011 Domaine Bertheau (Pierre et François) Chambolle-Musigny Pinot Noir
PopnPour, tasted over 2 hrs
-med dark red with purple tinge
-fragrant gorgeous red fruit elicits a mouth-watering response at first pour
-med/med+ acidity leaves a faintly tart note on the finish, med- weight though moderately concentrated black cherry liqueur raspberry mineral, respectably long finish med- tannins
-excellent Chambolle village wine drinking very well now in the zone
  • Cote d'Or commented:

12/14/18, 3:40 PM - No, I did not detect any green/under-ripe/vegetal notes. Caveat: while I can usually detect these and point them out when I do, I am not overly sensitive to them and in small amounts do not always find this trait unappealing.

Tasted over 30 minutes, from 375 mL
-translucent pale orange pink
-mild oxidation quinine yeast
-med+ acidity, some oxidative notes with faded berry intense minerality and finishes dry
-a little too oxidative for my taste but like the intensity, this bottle seems much more evolved than the last bottle
  • Cote d'Or commented:

10/16/18, 9:09 AM - Agree there are some similarities to Krug's rosé. However I find this wine lacking the richness, complexity and perfumed aromatics of Krug that, in my opinion, allow the oxidative elements to interplay well with the other components rather than dominate. But at about 20% the price it is a fair trade-off!

White - Sparkling
2013 Marie Courtin Champagne Eloquence Blanc de Blancs Extra Brut Chardonnay
Cork quite short, opened spontaneously in an eruption after removing foil, tasted over 2 hrs
-translucent pale yellow, exuberant thick mousse then pinpoint bubbles
-somewhat muted piercing iodine some yeast
-med+ acidity, light weight lean and focused without being austere mineral fresh bright super clean crisp and long finish
-spectacular wine that is utterly gorgeous now, LOVE THIS!
  • Cote d'Or commented:

7/7/18, 2:37 PM - Never tried Marguet but will look for them if anything like Courtin. MC's Resonance got me hooked and this Eloquence is even better.

-lovely young aromatically complex great choice for a house red, drinking well now with some upside

3/22/18, 7:13 PM - Yes, and agree it is a bit better today. Bodes well for future development!

Red
2008 Copain Syrah James Berry Vineyard Paso Robles
Slow-ox one hour, tasted over 2 hrs
-nearly opaque black cherry red no bricking
-moderately expressive smoky juicy purple fruit blackberry jam floral wet stone
-med/med- acidity, soft almost lush seemingly endless layers of depth without excessive weight, ripe plum/blackberry on a soil-inflected base and a touch of heat on the average length finish with med/med- tannins
-gorgeously complex evolving nose, straddles but doesn't quite cross the line between ripe and over-ripe and between rich depth and heaviness, some of the fruit on the palate has started to fade but not much overt development, this may still have a couple years of upside
  • Cote d'Or commented:

10/22/17, 6:36 PM - Frank, I did find this wine to be a bit heavier and more extracted than most of Wells' other syrahs I've tasted. Not sure if that's an effect of the vintage or the vineyard. Regardless, it was still quite nice, particularly the aromatics, which I found to be quite stunning. Assume that's partly due to whole cluster use (haven't looked up if he used a lot of stems for this wine in particular).

PopnPour, tasted over 90 minutes and on day 2

-barely med acidity, med- weight and not much depth though moderately expansive with simple soft earthiness and trace black pepper on mid-palate, med chalky tannins impart some rusticity; picks up a little depth but also more rusticity without gaining complexity on day 2
-pretty nose, lackluster palate that could gain some interest/complexity though not optimistic as it seems there isn't much there after the fruit had faded, this bottle more rustic and less interesting than a bottle opened just last month
  • Cote d'Or commented:

5/14/17, 3:43 PM - Frank, thanks for your comment. I consider your notes to be the reference standard for Copain wines. I was a bit surprised myself that this most recent bottle seemed to be somewhat dead in the mid-palate, though another bottle just last month showed a similar lack of stuffing. I am a cool-climate syrah fan (the only domestic syrah I ever drink is Copain, Arnot-Roberts and Rhys) and generally prefer lighter weight wines but there was an uncharacteristic lack of concentration and verve in this one. In reviewing my notes it looks like the Halcon site is on the lighter side. For me the 2009 seemed to be doing OK at age 6, the 2010 was lighter but vibrant at age 3, and the 2011 was pretty closed down but had mid-palate sap at age 3. I am not nearly as familiar with California vintage characteristics as Burgundy but perhaps 2008 was not as solid of a vintage for this site? Or alternatively, perhaps this batch of wines may have suffered during shipping? I will taste the 2008 Brosseau that was shipped at the same time soon to test this out.

-somewhat rustic, in early maturity perhaps still some improvement potential if the oak integrates a little more, brilliant food match
  • Cote d'Or commented:

3/24/16, 9:39 PM - There are some mature elements creeping in, but there is enough depth and tannic structure to suggest it has many more good years ahead of it and might even have some room for improvement. This was a half bottle, too so I suspect well-stored 750s will easily go strong for 5-10+ more years.

-barely med acidity, med weight generous round simple red and dark fruit with more than a little rusticity and med tannins on finish

  • Cote d'Or commented:

3/24/16, 9:33 PM - Yes, not sure, but taste profile was generally more like 2009 than 2008. Interestingly the Burghound review sounds more like a 2009 than a 2008 too.

PopnPour, tasted over 4 hrs and Day 2
-nearly opaque dark red, mild bricking
-mature sous bois and sour cherry
-med acidity, fiercely drying tannins omnipresent throughout the mid-palate and the finish obscure the relatively ripe and maturing flavors, very little of the '04 green; tannins even more abrasive on day 2 making it undrinkable
-while this doesn't overtly display the typical '04 pyrazines it has two of the other flaws of the vintage, i.e. early aging and dried out tannins, given its already advanced state of appearing to be near full maturity there seems to be little chance this will ever come into balance; this bottle was a mess though not sure if it is a bad bottle or representative of the wine at this stage
  • Cote d'Or commented:

9/27/15, 7:45 PM - Yes, it seems our notes were very similar. Hard to see how those tannins weren't more noticeable at release.
