solid 94. Enjoyable and great with a steak but not remarkable.

After an hour this is drinking beautifully. Great weight, substantial and plush. Perfectly even across the palate with just the right amount of grip to let you know it's serious

Found this at Watson's in Lan Kwai Fong... new in. Nice work. Though I'd never heard of SO, I saw his other bottles were made of Hoffman (the man's a genius) grapes so I got very excited.

Sure enough this is a decent wine, but no where near the dizzying heights of my hopes. Sort of a cross between Barossa and a more purple Rhone, also a dollop of greenness as often found in whole bunch clusters with liberal does of stem thrown in.

A decent but forgettable wine for me.

Equal highest score I have ever given in 1000+ reviews.

At 36 years old this is just incredible. 36 years!!!

The bottle is perfectly (too perfectly?) filled but I know It's provenance and the cork and the palate for the first 2 hours prove its years, confirmed by a hint of mold under the cap.

For the first 2 hours and with a stated 13.0% alc it harkened to old world wine techniques - but feed this baby some oxygen and you have a roaring Aussie v8 straight from an original Mad Max movie.

I am astonished at the ageing potential of this wine. I assume it would be well past prime but it's absolutely prime and still going.

There's medicinal fruit, balanced acidity omg it's all there. I would love to race this against any of the great French 82's.

'82 is revered as the best of the best - but it's this Aussie '82 that could be the king of that castle.

Beautifulully made wine of sweet sour succulent fruit. Maybe a little soapy but a classy affair none the less, offering great McLaren fruit. What a great region.

Most 'modern style' Mouton I've ever seen and tasted (until trying the 2015)

Feels like a departure from history in terms of style.

Chalky. Musky. Young stawberry.

Not even available in bottle yet and damn hard to imagine a couple of decades from now.
  • SlimShaney commented:

8/31/17, 11:30 PM - Good question. The 2014 Mouton is a beautiful young wine and so much more accessible and even delicate than I typically find French wines in their youth. Compared to the hyped 2015 amd 2016 the gorgeous 2014 offers, by contrast, amazing value. I have no doubt the 2014 will drink beautifully for a long time but Im intrigued whether it will feel as suprising light, youthful and delicate or if it will add some weight and more concentration over the years. Anyway I bought a half dozen of them so I look forward to finding out!

Candy green apple nose. Consistent zesty apple palate.
  • SlimShaney commented:

8/19/16, 6:47 AM - Filed it correctly, but can understand why you may enquire. I found the palate odd for Margaux or for any other first growth for that matter. Not what I expected at all. Perhaps an odd bottle.

2013 Mollydooker Verdelho The Violinist McLaren Vale

Appearance: Bright and clear, it has light lemon-green color, with watery rims and legs.
Nose: Clean, with medium (-) intensity aromas of green fruit such as pear, tropical fruit of mixed fruit bowl, stone fruit of peach, floral notes of honeydew, pungent spice of white pepper and sweet spice of coriander, oak notes of vanilla. The wine is youthful.
Palate: Dry with medium acidity, the wine has high alcohol and medium body. It has medium (+) flavors of green fruit of pear, oak notes of vanilla, stone fruit of peach, some sweet spice of coriander. The wine has a medium finish.
Conclusion: Good quality Australian Verdelho showing a ripe fruit characters, yet overall in good balance with the oak and varietal style, but in a much more concentrated way, the wine has a slightly more subdued nose than the palate, but showing good complexity. The alcohol level is very high though you would not feel that way, with a reasonable length on the finish. It is ready to drink now and not intend for ageing.

The prison transport arrived and I excitedly freed him from his chains and shackles.

However, for now the convict certainly needs a few more years locked away. He's too fiery. The stains of his crime still scarring his conscience.

Several years hence the parole board may reconsider. Hopefully by then he's found peace and harmony.
  • SlimShaney commented:

3/27/16, 10:34 AM - I thought the 2013 was brilliant. The 2014 to me tasted like a zinfandel set distinctly against a claret. Id agree that if it integrates over the years (as it should do) there's indeed a lot of harmonious potential. Good thing given that I have half dozen!
