2016 Craggy Range Chardonnay Les Beaux Cailloux Hawke's Bay
This is a good wine. Peach and caramel with good acidity and minerality. New world, but not over the top. Plenty of life left. Another impressive effort from New Zealand.

I tried this next to a Leeuwin Art Series Chardonnay and the flavors seemed muted in comparison, so it's not in that league. But, at half the price of the Leeuwin, this Craggy Range Chard is still a fantastic wine. I'm curious to try some more chardonnays from New Zealand.

12/13/19, 1:32 AM - Thanks for your note. Nice to hear both were good wines. Just want to ask which wine was half the price of the other?

  • BigJ commented:

12/13/19, 4:51 PM - Thanks for clarifying. The Leeuwin is a lovely wine. I'd guess based on the price you had the craggy range gimblet gravels not les beaux cailloux, in New Zealand the les beaux cailloux goes for about 30% more than the Leeuwin.
Some suggestions for kiwi Chardonnay to try if you're keen would be Nuedorf Moutere or any of the kumeu river wines. Cheers

Blind Tasting - French vs New Zealand (St Johns, Auckland): Inky, deep dark red. Rich and dense, concentrated dark fruits core, heavy but supple tannins, medium/full body, very long with cedar and herbals. A sublime CS with great strength and power. Blow-off one tonight. Need next 3-5 years to mellow.

2015 Ata Rangi Pinot Noir Martinborough
Spicy, with a little alcohol showing at the moment - which i expect will disappear in time. Deep red berry and earth. silky smooth tannin and nice acidity. Hold but very good.
  • BigJ commented:

7/25/18, 6:12 AM - I think so, I find Ata Rangi to be really good around 8-12 years old. I don't have a huge volume of wines tasted at that age, but enough to think thats a good spot for them- they grow really well into themselves.

Just snagged a couple of bottles of this with a discount code. Will report back in 10 years when I open them! Meanwhile, a friend introduced me to Gravette de Certan, the 2nd wine of the estate and that was gorgeous.

I found this as a solo in a wine shop in Tokyo, the guy laughed at me when I said it would be consumed soon.
Drunk over 2 days and hardly moved, great tannic grip and very nice acidity. this will require some patience, but it is clearly a stinking good wine. Cranberry, raspberry, leather, nutmeg, mushroom, tannin, tannin and.
I bought 6 more after my first glass and now wish I bought 12 having finished the bottle, come back in 10 years.

Violets and lilacs on the nose with pretty sophisticated blue to red berry fruit aromas and some cedar.
Medium bodied, powdery palate with balanced acidity and cool blue fruit. Blue flowers and dusty wood. A hint of Läkerol. Milky and powdery towards the finish.
Very modern. Chic and sophisticated like 80s fashion. I hate to admit it, but I like this quite a bit.

The entry level Kumeu chardonnay in this vintage fills me with a lot of excitement for the entire range in 2014. This rendition of the wine shares the light oak, zingy acids and almost French stylings, alongside tropical banana and pineapple notes, finishing dry and savoury. The mid-palate is richer than normal for the wine and has slightly more presence than previous vintages, as well. A class act.

After 2 hours' slow decanting (I just opened it and let it sit in a cool place) I poured. Somewhat pale, less saturated garnet color made me suspicious. Nose showed little character. On palate, it's medium bodied, just a little note of berries, oak, and boiled egg. Medium length finish. It's not a bad wine but definitely no charm there. Some others rated it highly and I would agree it is true. Mine is not that good maybe because It was too cold when delivered, I am not sure. It arrived on a very cold day (-14˚C) and the bottle was -5˚C. Of course it was not frozen at the temperature but it may have influenced the character at least a little. I will try it again some time later.
  • BigJ commented:

2/7/16, 11:47 PM - What was the wine temperature when you tried it? that will have a big impact, given the numbers you have mentioned.

Mostly 1966 Bordeaux and other surprises (Ripple Restaurant in Washington D.C.): An excellent special cuvee Champagne from one of my favorite producers. Indeed, I love their NV Brut as a "go to" Champagne. Dominated by Pinot Noir, but the house never reveals percentages. When opened prior to the dinner with staff at Ripple restaurant, store manager Caroline Blundell was impressed by its creamy smoothness. Indeed, the bubbles were very fine, and it came across as almost buttered brioche, yet the excellent acidity of the 2002 vintage lent this wine energy to match the vigor, as it was full bodied. While not as impressive in density (and charm) as a Salon 1996 that I had one week ago, this is a gorgeous bottle of bubbly - with a long vinous finish.

The first bottle of our birthday month Sunday sips happy hour open to anyone in our small estate. A blend of 55% Semillon and 45% Sauvignon Blanc, it presents to the eye a green apple/yellow in a white Burgundy glass. Pleasant. Fresh and vibrant lemon, grapefruit and a touch of tart and petrol aromas on the nose. Equally pleasant. Apple tarts with lemon zest on the palate with a fairly short and simple finish. From from some of the stunning white Bordeaux available, it offers a nice, straightforward and crisp white to start the evening and is, well, cheap as chips...amazing QPR! Merci beaucoup!

This will be really great with some time.
Dense and rich, dark fruit, rather modern, but within “limits”, with polished oak and fruit, harmonious, ripe, with good both structure and length.
One for the cellar.

Trinity Hill with John Hancock and Warren Gibson; 11/4/2015-11/5/2015 (Regional Wines and Spirits, Wellington, New Zealand): Dense nose - spice, floral, exquisite blackberry liqueur and leather notes. Wow palate - 30% whole bunch cluster fermentation, with a portion fermented at 25 degrees C for 56 days. This is the essence of syrah - beautifully mannered, pure black pepper, smooth and suave, long and involving. This is exotic, yet balanced. Very Hawkes Bay in style but also feels like it would not be out of place next to superb French Cote Rotie or Hermitage. 1.3% Viognier.

Yummy stuff, very much a masculine wine. This wine has that aged La Rioja funk on nose and palate that we love; giving this wine a bit of gaminess that went great with our charcoal grilled duck breast. Still has youthful fruit of ripe creamy black raspberry that play nicely with raspberry honey glaze on the duck breast. The black pepper, cedar and tool belt leather mid-palate melded with harmonic precision into a light tannic lengthy finish that carries the sweetness of the fruit.
  • BigJ commented:

10/29/15, 7:21 AM - Nice tasting note, I love the tool belt leather comparison. How do you think this wine will drink in the coming years? Can you see a peak window?

Dinner with Spenser (Imperial Treasure Super Peking Duck, Paragon): My first taste of the 2004 DP, and I must say that I am decently impressed. It is not as immediately giving and show-offy as the 2002 was upon release, but there is a focus and polish to the wine that bodes well for its future. The nose showed little notes of shortbread biscuits, Granny Smith apple and some flower and mineral touches. The palate was still very youthful and tight, with fresh acidity still rather dominant, with citrusy lime zest notes and fresh green apples at the fore, and then pretty floral tones weaving in and out on the midpalate. It was clearly very well put together even now though, with an elegant mousse and really fine balance wed to a nice minerality that gave the wine a complete and rather serious feel. It needs plenty of time yet, but the raw material is there to make a very good Champagne down the road. I would give this 5 more years at least.

Blend of Tempranillo, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Opaque, ruby-red. Nearly two hours breathing before the alcohol (14.5%) started to play more of a secondary role to the cherries, vanilla, espresso, spice and oak. Medium-bodied with soft tannins, dark cherries and a fairly long finish. We think, perhaps, we popped open this wine a bit too early. The balance of our luvlies will rest peacefully in the cellar for quite a few more years.
  • BigJ commented:

10/6/15, 4:41 AM - the 2002 of this wine was one of the sexiest reds I have ever had, liquid silk with a nose like violets and wild berries.. magic. I think a few more years will help immeasurably. Cheers!
