For the first half, this bottle had an odd, slightly watery feel to it. As if the wine was a bit diluted? As time passed, it became more lush and robust. The bottle and cork were in fine condition, so not sure why the oddity.

Drinking reasonably well. Somehow a little less complex than I recall from other bottles of this vintage.

Wow. This is drinking very well. Deep and complex flavors. Might be getting close to its peak. When I looked at the price after finishing the bottle, I was surprised at how low it was. This is a real value.

The '14s are really hitting their stride. Robust fruits and a solid backbone without undue tannin levels. Age-based sediment was just beginning to form (and tastes so good!).

While these will age nicely for another 5+ years, they're officially ready to drink now.
White - Sweet/Dessert
2003 Château d'Yquem Sauternes Sémillon-Sauvignon Blanc Blend (view label images)

An extraordinary golden delight. Too many complex flavors to describe; this wine evolved over the course of two hours.

Rich in color and with a notably higher viscosity than a few years ago, this wine is drinking wonderfully. Looking back at my prior notes on this vintage, I can see this is now at a drinking age - though has countless years ahead of it for those more patient.

What d'Yquem knows how to do is unmatched.

Poured from a half bottle.

Quite tight (even after two hours open and a vinturi swirl) and a bit hot right now. Definitely shows potential.

This is drinking very well. Very much a "Bordeaux style" wine, soft but with structure. More subtle fruits.

The wine was better than I anticipated and I was surprised to look back and see the price (which seems quite reasonable when considering the quality).

Just ok. Lacking a certain fullness I've come to expect from this label. Might be early still.

Wow. It's early, but drinking very well already. Robust fruits and solid structure. Ideal tannin level. This has many more years to go, but it isn't a crime to open one now!

Wow. This is drinking really well. Rich for a Pinot Noir, this wine is showing a lot of deep, rich fruits.

I’ve had this wine several times before. This one was a dud. The bottle had been cellared in ideal conditions and definitely wasn’t corked. While the complexion changed several times over the course of 1.5 hours, it never opened or delivered.

I don’t think this is representative of the producer based on the other bottles I’ve had...but this one went unfinished!

Bottle was shot.

Oddly, the wine didn't even form bubbles after going through an aerator.

This was a very interesting wine. While not tasting young, it tasted far younger than the vintage would suggest. No signs of brown around the edges. Really delicious and we’ll structured.

This bottle was recorked in 2013 by the producer.

A longstanding fan of most Harlan wines, this was my first bottle of The Mascot.

The initial bouquet was surprisingly robust, but the wine was far more reserved on the palate. Within about 20 minutes of open bottle time, roles reversed and it became a well structured array of fruits. A strong showing at the price point.

Probably had this a bit too soon. The wine was inky in color, as advertised, with a reasonable mix of fruits and structure. Nothing said "wow" just yet, though the wine itself still felt young and underdeveloped. Hard to see time not being this wine's friend. I'd wait another 2-3 years.
