Fruity up front, but a turbo awful finish that reeked of flat grape soda laced with bell peppers.

Delmonico with Greg and Colleen. Dark rich fruit on the nose, it starts off a little flabby. But about 30 minutes of air transformed it into a serious powerhouse as the backbone emerged and the baby fat vanished. By the 60 minute mark it was exceptional with nothing missing.

Dinner at Del's with Carissa. Years and years left on this despite its age. Cork had virtually zero seepage and the wine was just great right from the word go. Good concentration and just when you think its gonna let you down on the finish, it hits the afterburners and goes on and on. Great wine.

Light on its feet, more of a traditional pinot as opposed to the more full bodied stuff Peter usually makes. This was crisp and well balanced, very nice from a tough vintage.

Dinner at Vintner Grill with Carissa - she didn't like it that much, but I thought it was delicious. Great acidity supporting the fruit, really enjoyed this a lot.

Rated WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO. Drank from a magnum. The bottle was really heavy which made it difficult to drink from without asking someone to move out of the way. Glowing label from attached blacklight was a plus for sure.

Cali vs. Bordeaux showdown at home. Really kept opening up and improving with air. Still very young and maybe a bit shut down, but really well balanced - great finish. Nice musty Bordeaux nose. Carissa and I both preferred it over the 03 Sherwin Family.

Bright soft red fruit explodes out of the nose. Super jammy up front, followed by a wave of acidity that finishes strong. Once this integrates a bit more it could be great, but I'd give it another 5 years to soften up the fruit bomb up front and get it a bit more balanced.

Thanksgiving at home. Not a ton of fruit left in this - a bit thin. Still a very enjoyable bottle. Time to really start focusing more on French wine and less on American wine.

Really changed a lot in the glass. Not as good as remembered, but it was hard to get a bead on it. Started out with a bit too much acidity, then fleshed out a bit.

Good fruit, big and (standard for all 2006's from Napa) hugely tannic. Held up very well to chili.

Explosive fruit and still with structure and layers due to good acidity, this was just monumental. Had with Matt and Nancy and Carissa at Delmonico

Prime time drinking window imo. Explodes out of glass with dark red fruit and vanilla. After 15 minutes it really comes together and drank nicely over the next hour.

Nothing wrong here but nothing memorable either. Good nose, smooth balance. But very little weight, super refined tannins and a lack of real fruit prevent this balanced nice cabernet from being better.

Cracked my first bottle of 2008 last night. 96 points. Intense fruit with rounded off tannins, very balanced with a lengthy finish that comes in a wave just a hair after the midpalate. The fruit was balanced out nicely with some earthy layers that added some depth and (as usual with Spottswoode) gave this more character than your standard "Napa Cab" profile. Gorgeous wine.

Good nose but disappointing. Decent fruit with some mature green undertones and some alcohol swirling around. Disjointed with no two swigs tasting the same. Not bad, but had hoped for more.

Wow, a mature, 8 year old zinfandel with integrated fruit and great balance. Shortish finish but really a delight that held up well to spicy pasta but also drank great solo afterwards. Delicious.

Massive fruit, took some time and air to move from a short finish to a medium length finish. Never developed any real nuance midpalate though. Very good, but wanted more. At the Painted Pony in St. George UT with Bill and Kathi

Drinking so well so young (for a BF). As usual it evolved nicely over time. More layered than any other 06 Oregon PN I've had, but definitely has that big concentrated red fruit, cherry, cassis, raspberry, that many wines of this vintage have. At the Painted Pony in St. George UT with Bill and Kathi

Tasted side by side with the 1997. Drinking like a 5-year old cab. Bursting out of the glass with big fruit, this wine is still musclebound and has both the fruit and tannic structure to last for a long time yet. No rush here but man it was fun to drink and see all the fight it had in it. Could've used a little more balance transitioning through the midpalate but I think that could resolve with more time.

Tasted side-by-side with the 1996. Popped and poured, drank over a 2.5 hour period. Took some time to open up (though the nose was very nice) and once it did it was great. Very delicate and refined, layered and balanced. Reminded me in some ways of the 1997 Seavey, where the fruit was subdued but the overall experience was layered and exciting. Great wine at its peak.

Better than the incredible 2007? Maybe in a few years. On a weekend in Napa where I consistently preferred 2008 cabs to 2007 cabs due to increased structure and acidity, without sacrificing fruit, I think the 2008 Spottswoode may ultimately surpass the 2007, which I love and is pretty dang incredible right now.
