Nice bottle of aged Veuve champagne from the highly rated 2002 vintage. Lovely toasty oxidation and a lot less acidic than its non vintage sibling. Made a very pleasant pre dinner aperitif and still got life in it yet.

Very nice Portuguese red from Estremoz. I gave it a few years cellaring and it rewarded kindly with a beautifully balanced wine that would compare favourably with a fine Bordeaux from a warm vintage like 2003. Smoky notes came through from the oak aging and the wine was still in good shape. The inclusion of cabernet sauvignon in the blend was clear yet its Portuguese origin shone through.

Pleasant if unexceptional late harvest wine from Esporao. Nevertheless good to see an estate trying to produce desert wine in Portugal. There's Moscatel de Setubal and then there's Port but not much unfortified sweet wine. So well done Esporao and here's hoping the wine improves in future vintages

Well unfortunately as with previous bottles of Kirwan I was under impressed. A very drinkable yet really rather dull Bordeaux. Just didn't have any character of its own. Disappointing for a third growth.

Beautiful vintage Portuguese red wine from the Alentejano region. Produced by Encostas de Estremoz this wine whilst powerful at 14.5% alcohol was wonderfully balanced and had repaid a decade of careful aging. Decanted before accompanying duck legs in an orange and port sauce. My father a lover of Portuguese red wine exclaimed it was the greatest red wine he had experienced from the country. Pity I only had the single bottle.

Very pleasant white Bordeaux from this ever reliable estate. Mature but still full of that rich apricot fruit & vanilla punch that often comes from the graves. Accompanied very well a lake trout with a coriander cream sauce. Looking forward to the next bottle.

I was greeted with that classic Pauillac nose upon opening this cru classe from a Rothschild family Chateau. After an hour in the decanter the wine was silky, balanced and restrained. Not a blockbuster but a very pleasant wine showing much finesse. The 04's have definitely provided consistently enjoyable if not spectacular wines. Consumed with roast chicken.

Very pleasant St Julien now with some bottle age and from a good value vintage. The initial mild bandages smell when opened mellowed after decanting. On the palate there was some black berry fruit and cigar box flavours. A little dry but not surprising given the vintage. The decanter soon emptied when paired with roast chicken & homemade sage & onion stuffing.

Great bottle of classic St Julien in a nice mature state. Although no particularly unusual flavours came through the expected smokey fruit was present and correct. Very nice wine that I would have marked higher if it had an edge, however very pleasant indeed. Partnered beautifully with roast lamb.

Very nice Margaux with good balance and black berry flavours. Just starting to move into it's next phase as a little earthiness creeping in on the smokey nose. Would recommend consuming now as in an appealing mature stage. Decanted for an hour and forcefully aerated before partnering well with roast duck.

Great bottle of white Bordeaux from the graves region. The last time I experienced a Smith Haut Lafitte was the equally enjoyable though much maligned '97 vintage. Unfortunately unlike the '97 this bottle was not an amazing bargain of £10. However it was a very nice wine with that lovely coconut and pineapple flavour that develops as the wine ages and the oak mellows. I'm sure there is life left in the '04's yet but it's drinking so well now. Consumed with roast pork.

Great mature fourth growth from St Julien. Browning a little on the rim but still in good shape. The first thing that struck me was that medicinal smell that is common in the wine of Chateau Musar. Considered a fault but personally I rather like it. I believe it is produced by the presence of volatile phenols. Well if so I think a bit of such phenols gives a wine nice character & individuality. Also a warming cigar box flavour and rounded tannins with a dry finish. I was hoping for something special from the lauded 2000 vintage and was not disappointed. Decanted for an hour and drunk with roasted guinea fowl.

Nice to drink a mature but still focussed St Emilion. Lovely balance with integrated tannin and cigar box aroma. Still a good deal of life left yet in this 1995 but drinking beautifully now so if i had more bottles would probably drink them up. Partnered very well with roast leg of lamb.

Lovely Faugeres from J.M. Alquier. Rounded, balanced , with fine peppery fruit. Great restrained oak and good length. Always enjoy the finesse of his Bastides wine's. Partnered beautifully with roast gammon.

Surprisingly mature & developed for a 2000 vintage wine. The tannins were fully integrated & the rim was browning. Farmyard aromas hit the nose upon opening the bottle which remained present after an hours decant. There was also a little mustiness.....cork taint or just age? I can usually spot tca quite easily so i think this was probably just part of the aging process. Whilst enjoyable I felt the wine had peaked and I was left wishing I'd taken it out the cellar a little earlier. Consumed with roast chicken.

When first opened the 2003 seemed a bit lifeless as if all that was predicted about this Bordeaux vintage had come to fruition. Even the reasonable decant didn't seem to breath much life back into it. Disappointing from such a great Chateau. So the remaining halve left in the bottle was vacu pumped and set to one side. When revisited two days later it was like a different wine. The fruit was back but also an intense chocolate flavour. The tannin was firm but rounded. Maybe there is still life in the 03's yet?

Great vintage & a good wine from this 5th Growth Chateau. Decent tannin & fruit present with a good smokey nose. Decanted for just 30 minutes due to Christmas distractions. Partnered none other than roast turkey with all the trimmings.

All the information I's read about the aging ability of this particular Rhone white wine was correct. At 10 years old it was not heavily oxidised like most would be. Flavours of exotic fruit were present without the usual extreme nuttiness that evolves in Rhone whites. Still fresh but with that lovely Rhone fullness. Partnered with chicken in a cream and tarragon sauce.

Wow this has to be one of the world's great wines. This is the first 2006 I've tasted and whilst maybe not quite as great as the 2002 it is still a wonderful wine. Both vintages seemed to have aged incredibly well. Viscous and lush with amazing length this wine really shows what Sauvignon Blanc is capable of when in the hands of a skilled vintner. Flavours of tropical fruit and vanilla come through on the palate with the obviously present acidity now softened during cellaring. Went beautifully with cod in an orange and marjoram sauce.
