Opened and decanted for 45 min, served in Riedel Sommelier Burgundy stems at 63 F. Clear garnet color of medium intensity, Nose of clove, cola, allspice damp forest floor, mushrooms, sarsaparilla, cherries, rubarb, and plum. Palate was powerful and finely balanced with soft silky tannins Acid was medium. Finish was pure hedonism, perfumed and never ending. Over the course of drinking, this bottle evolved scents and flavors of dried tea, violets and cranberries along with the before mentioned. This wine was ready to drink but could have aged for decades. This was an impressive tour de force wine.. The second 100 point wine in my lifetime.. I went into mourning when the bottle emptied

We liked our second bottle better than the first, and I believe it had everything to do with the food that was served alongside. Our first consumption was with Thanksgiving dinner, which had high sugar content in many of the sides and very little fat on the turkey; that ended up being a less than ideal pairing with this particular bottle. The second time, we tried this with deliciously marbled pork chops and a decadent mustard-leek-and-cream reduction - oh my. A completely different experience! I think you need to serve this dry gewurtz with a fatty dish in order to get the best experience. I feel like I drank two different bottles of wine, and much enjoyed our second time around. Delicious!

5/23/16, 12:08 PM - My Goto Gewurz pairing is with spicy Thai. Just tried it over the weekend and was the bomb!

11/23/17, 7:10 AM - Our favorite pairing for this wine is Thai food. If you have a bottle left I would try it with something spicy as it adds balance and enjoyment.

Now I understand BdM better. DRY! Very tannic. Unripe fruit. Better with food. Would be interesting to taste high-end producer, then perhaps give it another go. If you love dry reds, this is a nice choice. The wine seems well-crafted. I would probably choose this over a Cali Cab for a pasta pairing or something that required a tannic, structured dry red. I must admit I'm very limited on Italian varietals.

10/4/17, 4:22 AM - Thanks for the feedback. I'll make sure to give it an hour or two decant next time. Please note that I use a different scale. 72 means low-OK.
I'll just use my own scale for private notes from now on. I changed the 72 to an 88.

Reviewed CT scale and upgraded my score from 55 to 75. Wine is decent but not to be avoided.

4/5/16, 6:38 AM - Seems to have worked, the 55 is gone. Thanks!
