Saw the 15.1 alcohol level and feared the worst, but this was quite elegant for a RRV Pinot and masked the alcohol well. Nice complexity and purity of fruit. Super enjoyable with Turkey.

This half bottle illustrates how magical Burgundy can be. Super fragrant nose of red fruit, some clove, and dusty earth. On the palate this starts with super concentrated darker red fruit and seamlessly transitions to layers upon layers of minerals and more savory earth, all wrapped up in still present tannins. The finish lingers for a good 30 seconds. This is that rare combination of banging fruit, tons of savory complexity, and a long finish. This is the full package.

Thick, rich and concentrated fruit, integrated oak, some funky barnyard and animalistic notes and strong tannins characterize this fun, but not really balanced red. Not sure if this will ever integrate into something elegant, but complex and a good drink now.

My wife and I shared this for Mother’s Day, and I have to say this bottle was nothing like I was expecting. Full of surprises, but in a good way I think. The nose is a cross between an aged Bordeaux and a Pinot noir, with sweet red fruit, aged saddle leather and earth. On the palate I would say this is closer to a fine and complex Pinot noir than 90% of the robust zinfandels I’ve ever tasted. At only 12.9%, this is restrained and light to medium weight. This is so bright but still complex. Mostly red fruit, nice acidity and some slight leather and baking spices. It ends with a slightly sour, but really pleasant and long finish. All the pieces work together and this is elegant and seamless, keeping you coming back for another sip. Surprised I’m rating this so high, but this is a really fun and great wine.

Tons of potential, so rating on that, not enjoyment today. Nice dark fruit, but just a wall of strong tannins at this stage. Had the acidity to age, so should be a good one in 5 years. Wish I had another bottle.

Intoxicating nose of dark fruits, burnt toast, earth and violets. On the palate this is not over the top at all, clocking in at 13.5%. Dark red fruit is balanced with iron, toasty oak, black pepper, bracing acidity and a wall of tannins. It all comes together in a chocolaty, silky package that works well with food, but not quite enough complexity or that deliciousness factor on its own.

Rave reviews from the critics - 96 decanter, 93 Jeb Dunnuck, 92 Wine Advocate. Definitely charming and enjoyable with concentrated warm ripe red and blue fruit and soft notes of vanilla, tobacco and leather. Nicely balanced for almost 15% alcohol. Nice length on a velvety lush finish as well. My only complaint is that this comes across as particularly new world, without a sense of place for a blend of 75% Grenache, 20% Carignan, and 5% Mourvèdre. Overall this was really nice for the price.

PnP. An old vine field blend of traditional Portuguese varieties. Beautiful port-like nose of sweet fruit, cedar and tobacco. On the palate, this is dark and concentrated, starting out very fruity and oaky,a bit unbalanced. However, at the two hour slow ox mark, this is starting to sing. This is a serious wine that benefits from food with layers of red and black fruit, smoke, graphite, some delicate Asian spices, strong acidity, vanilla, wood and chalky, slightly bitter tannins. Medium- long finish. I think this has tons of potential that will likely reward with more time. I definitely don’t see the 95 Wine Enthusiast rating right now, but not saying this couldn’t get there with more patience.

Definitely more of a Barolo than Barbaresco Nebbiolo vibe. Dark fruit, cedar, tightly wound, good acidity, decent tannins and tar and floral notes on the finish. Was a good drink with food now, but have a strong hunch this needed a bit more time to unfurl and show even better.

Well made Washington State blend of 60% Cab Franc and 40% Merlot. Nose of red fruit, pepper and some musky notes. On the palate, I got nice red and black fruit, cloves, and some wet earth notes, closing with a medium finish and some chalky tannins. This has all the pieces and structure to shine, but needs more time in bottle or plenty of air to come into balance more. Was disjointed at the start, but definitely got better and more integrated with time in glass. An interesting blend I can get behind at $20, but not so sure at $30.

Rough day with the baby, so popped this random bottle I found in my cellar. Intoxicating nose of dark black fruit, wet earth, and old leather. On the palate, this is a big and concentrated wine, but has a lot going on with layers of complexity and very Bordeaux like characteristics. Dark black fruit, tobacco, leather, slight green pepper note and silky tannins. This is a really enjoyable and fun wine and definitely recommend in the under $20 range.

se of olive brine, gamey smoked meats, and blackberry. On the palate, this starts off funky, but in a good way I think. Mellow blackberries quickly move to tons of savory notes. Olive brine, gamey meats, and a black pepper finish make this an interesting drink. Not what I was expecting and difficult to pair well, but definitely different in a good way for a new world Syrah.

A 50/50 blend of Monastrell and Shiraz, this Spanish wine from the Bullas region is a total over performer. Only 6000 bottles produced. Pours teeth stainingly dark, almost pitch black. On the palate this a big wine even at 8 years of age. Concentrated but not over the top red and black fruit, black pepper and clove, layers of minerally tannins, and a long, savory finish.

Amazing perfumed nose of sous bois, dusty oak, worn leather, red fruit, and some floral notes. It pours a pale and cloudy red. On the palate, this is still very much alive and kicking, but with tons of secondary characteristics. I find this a very old school mix of of muted red fruit, heavy doses of oak, and dusty earthy notes. At 18 years of age, this has all come together quite nicely. Despite packing such a large punch, there is something floaty and elegant about the package. Highly recommend, but don't think this will get any better and would drink in the near future.

Single vineyard offering from one of my favorite producers. I don’t drink a lot of petite Syrah, but this was really nice with grilled lamb. Integrated nose of sweet dark fruit, oak, and earth. On the palate, this had big, dense, dark fruit up front but moved seamlessly to complex layers of modest wood, chocolate, and fine tannins that pulled everything together in a nicely balanced package. Entering its prime and will likely stay here for some time.

Didn’t know much about this wine, but needed something to celebrate the birth of our newest follower! Stopped by Paul’s since it was right by the hospital and picked up this bottle on recommendation of the manager from their back room, not on shelfs. You might notice the similarities in label, but a Mendoza effort from the French family that owns and operates Chateau Leoville Poyferre. A blend of 70% Malbec, 13% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Syrah, 5% Merlot, and 3% Petit Verdot.

Enticing nose of sweet fruit that previews a simple fruit bomb. However, the palate really tells a different story. Definitely fruit forward with beautiful ripe red fruit, but nicely balanced with the more savory elements of tobacco, earth, and finishing with stone and minerals. I believe this is still on the upswing with tannins that pull everything together remaining and should likely be drunk between now and 2021. Really a fine effort.

Nose is undeniably new world, with sweet kirsch, vanilla and oak shining through. On the palate, this is a bit underwhelming, but not un-enjoyable. Relatively smooth, but appears on its way out with slight remnants of red fruit, a thin mid palate, and somewhat astringent tannins to round it out. Not what I would expect at this price point, but would still be a good pair for a big steak.

Broke my streak of overly sweet CDPs recently. Classic nose of red fruit, violets, old library book, and earth. On the palate, this is drinking really well right now with lush kirsch and raspberry notes, garrigue, black pepper and leather. Still has some tannins, but brings along all of the flavors for a long and pleasant finish. Just starting to all integrate fully, but think this is still on the upswing. Went great with ribs.

Really 90+

Decanted three hours. This bottle had a really unique nose of minerals, smoke, and dark sour fruits. Poured dark garnet. On the palate this was extremely interesting with layers of dark sour fruit, volcanic minerals, and oak which is almost fully integrated. Something about the wine is elegant despite what a huge wine it is. The finish is long and still particularly tannic, so this wine needs food or much more time. Only just entering its drinking window, so could see this getting much much better with more time in bottle.

From a local tasting. On the nose, lots of tobacco, loamy earth and hints of sweet fruit. Really refined and elegant palate, but very tight and linear at this point. Reserved black and red fruit. Lots of tannins and acid but not sure this will get that much more complex with age.

Really 91+ with all of the potential here. A really nice Sangiovese and Cabernet based supertuscan. Pours a deep purple with a beautiful nose. Decanted for two hours. On the palate, concentrated and rich mostly black fruit with some tobacco notes. Mostly integrated oak provides some nice spicyness for a long finish with tannins that keep all of the flavors going. Really nice wine already, but has all the pieces to get even better over the next few years

I don’t even know where to start with the Riesling. 20 year old quality Riesling for $14 from Garagiste? While this lacked the acidity and freshness to suggest it should age much longer, it was a beautiful wine for a hot summer day on the porch. Sweet apple, pear, honeysuckle, and finishing with some slight sourness like a lambic ale, but refreshing and balanced.

t’s humid and muggy in DC, and for someone who isn’t big into white wine, that means I’m looking for some nice summer reds. I definitely steer more towards the savory and Burgundian pinots, which this is not. Nevertheless, over the course of three days the candied and floral fruit melded with the wonderful delicate spice and earthy undertones and developed the silkiest texture. Long finish that lingers and lingers. Overall a nicely balanced and a pure expression of the terroir.

Overly sweet and syrupy Pinot with artificial vanilla taste. Just too jammy and manufactured for my palate.

Pours dark purple. Most amazing nose I’ve ever had the opportunity to smell - kirsch, licorice, leather, and earth all mesmerizing. This amazing mix of red fruit, leather, and tannins continues on the palate. This wine literally dances across your tongue with new world fruit, but a real depth of earth, leather and herbs that seem more old world in character. Wine of the year so far for me. Am definitely going to be on the lookout for more.

From one of my favorite small producers, this Zinfandel is made from two small vineyards in Dry Creek 85% and Alexander Valley 15%. Aged in American Oak for 18 months. Only 100 cases made.

Nice nose of crushed rose petals and sweet red fruit. On the palate, this was way too much fruit and sweetness for me on day one, but it exhibited a good backbone with layers of tannin and that great zin spiciness that goes so well with BBQ. On day two, this was much more up my alley with a more savory character, but still nice richness from the fruit. There was still some residual sugars and sweetness that prevents me from rating this higher, but really a wonderful wine with rich and velvety fruit and wonderful complexity and spice.

The Clos du Val was decanted for three hours prior to consumption. While the nose exhibited dark fruit and peaty funk, the palate remained somewhat restrained and tight with quality fruit and a bit of funk. However, not much complexity and surprisingly short finish and resolved tannins.
