2008 Cascina Chicco Barbera d'Alba Bric Loira
PnP, served non-blind over 2 nights. Dark ruby core, no sign of age. Explosive nose, with bright aromas of sage, black cherry, pie crust, cured meat and milk chocolate. Large-scaled palate, but equally well lifted. This is not your father's barbera, no sir. Depth and breadth to spare it seems as this just wants to give more and more, so I sit back and I take more and more. Really quite a surprise on the night, and seriously tasty juice. Bravo, Marco! 14,0% abv, drink thru 2019.

3/19/14, 11:10 AM - Had a bottle of this at a restaurant. Totally agree with your note. It was not what I was expecting. Went home, found it on wine searcher, and ordered a case.

Dark garnet. Funky nose - leather, brett. Cola and fizz which blew off somewhat over an hour, but left behind a funky taste. Black fruit and leather still came through, but again not what I was hoping for and not the esprit de Beaucastel. Reminded more of a Pinot noir than a CdP. Will let it sit for a day and see how it goes.

3/14/14, 2:41 PM - You know, I was going to disagree but I gave it another taste today. Fizz has blown off and the strong cola and funk have receded. There is still some of both but it is mixed with some black fruit. I wonder if this really is just a dumb phase or a bad bottle in a dumb phase. I've got a few more bottles. I'll let them sit and see how they develop.

2008 Louis Jadot Beaune 1er Cru Pinot Noir
This seems to have gotten a rough ride with previous reviews but I actually quite like it - it at least has a sense of place stamped on it. Light, acidic and straight forward but there is a tickle of earth and it is very restrained. Probably needs a couple more years to ease off and relax a bit and let the fruit and acidity blend together. Should last for 10 years and develop more complexity. Tough to love now, but should be good.

Bottle was "OTH". No fruit left, nothing but tannins and very tart. Should have been drank 10 yrs ago, live and learn.

Very dark purple, almost fully opaque with thick legs and a good deal of sediment. Followed the progression over 24 hours. Started off with a massive bouquet of flowers and dark fruit balanced with white pepper, mocha, mud, and oak. It was a clean, unctuous, high octane, delicious explosion of very Barossa-like flavor at it's best. Big body, medium tannins, low acidity, 15.6% worth of magma (Not for the faint of liver). Long finish and quite memorable in that I find it so Australian. Appealed to the former bourbon lover in me :) A medium-rare filet was a very nice compliment. It lost a lot of intensity and energy overnight so I suggest a short aeration before consumption. 5+12+17+7 = 91
