Notes of weathered leather, pencil shavings, dried tobacco leaves, dark fruit, dried plums, sous bois and a peppery note, reminding me of Pimientos de Padrón, all came to mind and lent the wine a rather sophisticated touch. Charming and rather feminine on the palate, with already resolved tannin, a medium-plus body, remarkably fresh acidity and a long-lasting finish. This bottle was in a really good spot and was drinking quite nicely.

12/7/18, 1:18 PM - Funny that you ask... I had brought the wine to a restaurant and had left it in the care of its staff. Apparantly, they had some difficulties with the cork, since it didn't want to come free of the bottle.

Blind tasting of wines from Northern Rhône. Again, rather floral on the nose, but this has a noticeably clammy and perfumed tendency. Aside from the sea of blossoms, which can hardly be missed, I get notes of stone fruits. Slightly creamy mouthfeel, lots of extract and a strong alcohol. Medium-strong (-) acidity, that lets the wine roll off your tongue rather floppily. I’m missing inner tension, balance and structure here. Perfumed and flowery on the palate, too, along with some yellow fruits and a note of glycerin. Medium-long to long-lasting finish.

Served alongside roasted lamb, Peking Duck and honey-coated duck legs. Morello cherries, worn-out leathers, sotto bosco and gingerbread dominate the bouquet. After some additional aeration in the glass, also notes of plums, cloves, some amarena cherries, mushrooms, dried rose petals and raspberries. This wine is quite finely woven and treads very lightly on the palate. On the other hand I’d say that it has always been rather light-footed and elegant than being of the flamboyant sort. Fresh acidity, almost completely resolved, fine-grained tannins, medium-bodied, 13.5%, raspberries, tart cherries and other red fruits, with a touch of licorice. Very sophisticated. Medium to long-lasting finish. Drink now.

Jetzt trinken.

Blind tasting of a number of Grosse Gewächse. A fantastic bouquet containing a kaleidoscope of aromas! Bouillabaisse with lots of seashells as a basic ingredient, steel minerality, pineapples, apricots, peaches, sea buckthorns, moss, lactic notes and a little rubber. A multilayered wine with crisp acid that grants a great flow and a superb balance to match it. Ripe stonefruits, yellow fruits, salty minerality, shell limestone and candied lemon zest are the flavors I get on the palate. The wines prances over my tongue, as if it was a catwalk. Enormously long aftertaste. This will even get better with more time. 96+

Decanted at 3pm and drunk over the next 6 hours. Medium translucent ruby color with a bit of brick on the rim. Smokey bacon, cherry, slight vanilla and anise on the nose. Light to medium weight on the palate, Burgundy-ish. Palate is rich and chewy with the cherry, rose petals, anise, leather and an earthy, smokey finish. No hint of oxidation in this bottle which has been in my cellar only for the last 5 years or so. Great with a wood fire grilled Prime Strip Steak! This seems to be at peak with totally resolved tannins and a velvety feel though there is somewhat of an astringent element on the mid-palate. Certainly time to drink up. Probably best when we drank the last drops. Thanks to MNIG for the "heads up" that it's time to drink this one up...spot on!

Blind tasting of a few Barolo wines with some friends. Ruby-red in color. Raisins, violets, leather, clove, blackheart cherry, a balsamic and slightly maderized note and a mineral component that reminds me of rusty iron. Firm acid, quite present and ripe tannins, with 14 above. A somewhat rough mouthfeel. Buttermilk, sour cherry, red fruits and some raisins on the long finish. Somehow, this wine seems unsound, which is odd considering its age and slightly oxidized condition. I usually don’t dislike somewhat angular wines, but I’m uncertain whether this will improve with more time.

Rubinrot. In der Nase Rosinen, Veilchen, Leder, Gewürznelke, Schwarzkirsche, balsamische, leicht madjarisierte Noten, rostiges Eisen. Am Gaumen straffe Säure, recht präsente, reife Tannine, 14 Vol.-%. Kratzig am Gaumen. Buttermilch, Sauerkirsche, rote Früchte und etwas rostiges. Langer Abgang.

9/29/16, 3:36 AM - Yes, I was told that evening that it had been decanted 2 hours prior to the tasting. We enjoyed the wines over a course of about 5 hours, so there was some time for the wines to open up.

I'm looking forward to reading about your impressions! Cheers!

This wine is just getting started, but boy, am I happy, that I still have a few more safely stored away. Served chilled and after some aeration and having warmed up a bit, this wine simply didn't stop singing!
Absolutely fabulous nose of ripe heart cherries, plum juice, sweetly dark fruits, rose petals, tar, sous bois, leather, dried tobacco leaves, truffles and an ethereal aroma which always reminds me of aged aceto balsamico. These aromas seem to be constantly shifting and alternating, with the scent of sweetly spices accompanying them the entire time.

The wine possesses fresh and vibrant acidity, as well as velvety yet notable tannins. Full-bodied and refined, with well-integrated alcohol at 14.5% abv and likewise well-integrated wood. A very complex and multi-layered wine. Still, a little on the brooding side. Plum juice, sweetly spices, leather, an earthiness and dark cherries from Basel. Immensely long finish, that just doesn't want to end. This wine was made to endure time and should continue to delight humanity for another two decades.

9/26/16, 8:41 AM - Thanks, and you're very much welcome! I was really curious, and lucky for me, that the cat didn't get killed this time, but you should definitely hold back any bottles you have - this wine will be much more rewarding after 2019+
