After initially being quite sharp and unrepentant, after more than a week open (but gassed) in my fridge, this has finally come around. Perhaps the stock market route combined with a 2 day fast (broken this afternoon) has made me overly fond of alcohol, but this is now absolutely delicious! The nose is loaded with ripe, dark fruits, spices and cedary oak. The palate is medium-full bodied and rich, but very well behaved. This is supple, never overripe and with very high quality tannin. This should develop very well in the cellar. I won't touch another bottle until 8 years old. Drink: 2024-2031+ 94+

3/14/20, 1:13 PM - I opened a bottle, thought it was mediocre, put in fridge over night, still mediocre... wasn't sure if bad bottle or really, really young. Maybe young based on your review, but maybe bad... couldn't taste anything!

Double decanted for 90 min, deep ruby, dark fruit with that unique corvina spice & a touch of prune, med/firm tannins, long finish; delicious, drink or hold (probably at the start of a long plateau)

1/15/20, 6:31 AM - Wondering how this was doing. Thanks. Some of the monster tannins finally smoothing out?

  • Wine Grades commented:

1/16/20, 5:53 AM - Opened a bottle last night - it is definitely calming down nicely, but as you note has a long plateau.

Nose of lemon, lime, apple, pear, peach, and slate and shale, same on the palate, big body, intense mouth filling fruit, rich fruit, young, needs 7 years to peak, good acid, good tension, and good attack, long, long, lovely finish and aftertaste.

This bottle is fantastic already, I will try to stay away from it for the next couple of years though

No hints of the harmonic convergence yet.

I bought several bottles of this cuvee a few years ago. I stored the bottles in my Eurocave from day one. Yet there is a very wide disparity in quality among the bottles from excellent to nearly undrinkable. We are well within the drinking window, so I must conclude there were QC issues prior to bottling.

Softer that the -05, easier in a way but also very fresh. More fruit, less of leather and tea.
  • Wine Grades commented:

10/24/18, 1:10 PM - Surprised you found this softer than the 05. I felt this rather still tannic, more than I thought it would be. I have one bottle left so have been saving it.

Not very complex, but this is drinking well at the moment. Darker tones of fruit and tar. Not sure if this is barrique, but that is what I would guess. Tannins have softened and faded to the background, and there is decent acidity. Should cruise for a while, but I don't see it improving from here.

Overall nice balance but far from prime. Today I prefer the 04 and 98.

SO'd overnight then decanted for an hour & back in the bottle to take to dinner later, very deep ruby, dark fruit, mod/firm tannins, long finish; delicious & just beginning to drink with long decant, will last for yrs!

6/24/18, 4:59 AM - Thanks for the update on this wine - last bottle I had took 24 hours to open up so wondering where it is in drinking window. After it opened I loved it so much I went back and bought out 13 bottles left at store that were on sale for $59.99, which seemed like a fantastic price!

Beautifully made wine offered at a bargain price. This is drinking like a wine that has 5 - 7 years of age on it. Already showing secondary characteristics that closely resemble right bank Bordeaux. This would be a good ringer in a blind Bordeaux tasting. Tannins were smooth & silky. Again, surprising for a wine this young, especially one from Italy.

Inky black like charcoal and earthy and really, for its super massiveness, all there.

Pop and pour... Day one: wine came out so hot with alcohol I felt my mouth was on fire. There seems to be something special under there but couldn't taste it after only one glass. Stay tuned...

Day two: alcohol blown off, but nothing there. Tastes thin with no fruit. Heat damaged? I'm convinced this bottle was flawed in some way.
  • Wine Grades commented:

4/19/18, 6:08 PM - Thanks - like to try it again but scared to open another bottle.

  • Wine Grades commented:

4/19/18, 6:33 PM - Thanks for the info. Fortunately, the seller was honest enough to refund me for the obviously flawed bottle. I'd bought a lot of bottles from them and never had an issue before.

I found this had no flaws and was perfectly adequate, but how in the world WA rated it 98 is beyond me. Maybe it tasted better young, but right now it tastes like a $10-15 wine and I could not imagine it getting any better. It is mildly tannic and flat. Some tart fruit but not much. Opened up with lots of alcohol. That burned off but nothing was left. I just have nothing impressive to say about this wine. I don't understand how after 13 years it is so disjointed and borning.

Clear, medium, ruby in appearance. The nose is clean, with medium intensity and notes of sour red cherry, blackberry, violet, black cherry, black pepper, vanilla, and leather. The palate is dry, with medium plus acidity, high tannins (ripe but a bit coarse), medium alcohol, medium plus body and medium plus intensity. The flavors match the nose. Medium plus length.

Looking at this tasting note, all the elements are there to give this a very good or outstanding, but..... I just don't like this bottle as well as the previous ones. Everything seems a little out of balance and muted. Perhaps it's a bad bottle, or maybe the wine is dumbing down a bit. Could also be that this was done as a tasting and not just sitting drinking and enjoying. We still have plenty of it left and our previous impressions were that this wine will age, but if the next bottle is similar we may have to start drinking.

10/3/17, 2:54 PM - I bought a case of this after having one bottle that was fantastic. I thought second bottle was just "okay" so I'm not sure if this is going through a phase or it is going downhill, hope the former!

Basically I probably just don't like sweet wines. I heard this was an excellent reisling so I thought I would try one again but just too sweet. Not sure what else to say about it. We poured out the rest of the bottle which we never do.
  • Wine Grades commented:

6/27/17, 5:29 AM - Are you sure you didn't get the Eroica "gold" bottling? That is their sweet wine, the standard bottling is not sweet at all so I cannot understand your comment otherwise.
