Manni is THE advocate for Kerner - an under the radar variety that I’d describe as Riesling with a figure. His clocks in at 13.5%, so you’d expect some richness but it comes out a clean translucent silvery green skin. It looks mute but sings. Grapefruit and lychee and white flowers and white pepper too.

The way to my heart is wonderfully unusual aromas. Here are some - think smokey pineapple and buttered popcorn and maybe stewed apples in simple syrup. No doubt Rhône, this is full bodied and powerful, but not at all sloppy - oak and spice, lean and clean.

Most of the good stuff is on the surface. Shows well initially and loses legs once you dig a little. It becomes a little insipid, tart, watery, and stemmy after a glass or two.

Not so chaotic, but comfortably in between lean and ripe. Really very good - all murky raspberry, cherries, little bit of grip.

The best for money and thought, Margaine is something I could drink ever single day. It’s light with a fresh proofing bread, rye cracker, and crystalline citrus.

This is probably my favorite Lambrusco I've found stateside. Fruity and bone dry with plenty of cage.

A golden hue but light in glass. Slightly baked stone fruit. Peach, apricot and pear. Possibly some skin contact for a little grip.

This is the juicy wine full of VA that I would have hated a year ago. I’m the first to admit my tastes have evolved. The aromas on this Pet Nat of Malvasia are kind of insanely wonderful. It’s a suspension of depth and layers and a piercing perfumed floral iodine that registers the same way the best Tobala Mezcal does - it hits the deepest part of where the brain and nose meet.

It’s the most interesting version of the saltiest naval orange you’ll fine.

My second vineyard of Cruse sparkling Valdiguie and it’s good but it’s definitely the less interesting of the two. Where Deming was a pretty hazy white strawberry, Rancho Chimiles is more upfront - visuals and flavors of bright Jolly Rancher watermelon and pink strawberry starburst. A little overpriced at $35.

Let’s make more native yeast Riesling! It’s top two, three of the worlds great grapes and I feel like we’ve barely tapped into what it can do. Many of our favorite Riesling makers have been stubborn, sticking with pre-selected strands from the same mother.

Oddero Riesling is very good, but it tastes not unlike Alsace or Mosel or Rhône. Shy aromas with smokey flint and lemon. I don’t have much to add because I couldn’t find much more. Big textures and familiar territory.

The three I tried from Le Grange Tiphaine really put me in a chair. This though, is one of the best Loire expressions of Chenin I’ve ever come across. It’s rich, steely, textured, with smokey flinty, fresh (not baked) small stone fruits. Apricots, quince, pear. Wow.

Muller Thurgau in Sancerre style. Salty, grassy, herbal, loaded with acid and a little cream. How did Vinous give this 94 though? Good, but basic.

These La Grange Tiphaine wines (import from Jenny and Francois) are a must. The most nuanced, wild, complex, elegant, unassuming profiles. This is meaty. It has all the bloody iron rich minerals you could ever want. Herbal and mushroomy with screeching grip. The most minimal pyrazine Cab Franc, if green bell pepper isn't your thing.

Spectacular. A thousand layers of caramel toffee, dare, hazelnut, and acorn. Nutty and smells like sweets, but relatively dry and winey with salty accents.

So much from this tight little package. Edi Kante is a zen master of Italian white and his 50/50 Chard Malvasia traditional method is excellent. Bruised apples, macerated strawberries, and toasted bread become a mouth of bright lemon and chalky limestone.

Still Chenin is Broc’s racehorse. 2018 is complex, layered, restrained, complete. I remember 2017 having some extra umph. Lean and full of acid, it has more in common with Chablis or Sancerre than Vouvray. Lemon and sea shells, seaweed, and puff of smoke.

There’s been a wave of hip pet nats taking form as nothing more than fermented fruit juice in a clear bottle (Furlani for example). The Lunaria “bio budget” Pet Nat could easily have been that, but it’s not. It’s a restrained bone dry yeasty tart grapefruit peach sour tangerine mix. It’s enough to think about - it won’t blow your brains, but neither your wallet.

Candy for the Chenin freaks like me. Preserves varietal character better than most sparkling Vouvray. Off dry with about 14g of RS, all of which comes from pressed juice (no dosage). Baked red apple, blanched almonds, and spiced honey cake. Powerful big textures.

Juicy Lang is not my favorite platform for Syrah, but this is still ok. It’s not the slippery perfumed deeper version from Rhône. But still, black pepper, violets, and red fruit as a matter of fact.

A masterful local hand at cool climate aromatic whites, an Ely favorite. This Gerwurtz is equal with everything Ovum does. It’s expressive, balanced, and deep. Smokey tangerine in. Blooming field of flowers. All underneath a silver green skin. Wonderful.

2018 Ovum Big Salt Elkton Umpqua Valley Riesling Blend, Riesling (view label images)
1/29/2020 - Elycohn Likes this wine:

A misnomer. When I think salty, I imagine lean, low abv, high acid. This is instead, like most of what Ovum does very well - big, aromatic, expressive. They say it’s meant to capture a day at the beach but for me, it’s a very good nod to the viscous, aromatic whites of the Italian and French Alps. Textured - with tangerine, clementine, and lychee melon.

Broc is the gateway drug to natural wine. He makes very good stuff, but not necessarily innovative or boundary pushing. And for me, his star horse is and always has been Chenin. So it goes with the 2018 Valdiguie Pet Nat. It’s good but not excellent. Fine for fun. Bright pink and candied red fruit, grapefruit, bitter citrus. Jovial and celebratory.

A feral Riesling animal. Textured orchard fruits and sour cream. Acid burbling through apples and pears - favors fruits and ferment in exchange for minerals and petrol. Don’t procrastinate as this will turn quickly in a day or two.

Nestarec is up there with the most cultish of natural wine and tiniest of allocation. Last year, I tried his white Forks & Knives. I really didn’t like it. It seemed dead and mid- ferment. But the red here (all Pinot), is so incredibly alive. It’s spiritual. The aromas jump at you - bright red fruits and a heavy dose of rocky minerals. And cooked, smoked, agave. And iodine - the smell of your hands after cracking open red lobster. And raging acid. Ok, Nestarec, ok.

Serious and seriously exceptional from a French master making Burgundy style Rioja. It’s more Burgundy though - expertly integrated oak (French) and acid - equally intense and graceful. Pale and powerful tutorial in balance.

A funky swervey champagne Rose’ of all Pinot (8% still juice) where all the fruit is contained within a burlap sack of barley husk and smoked peaches. Muted dried fruits - dried orange peel, dried rose petals, dried wild strawberry, celery seed, fennel, and Parmesan. Tart berries only on the finish. So awesomely unexpectedly savory.

God so good. Maybe the Champagne I tend to think about most. A glimpse into the world of aged Champagne at NV cost and no patience needed. Via solera system, it’s and equal mix of Chardonnay, Pinot Noire, and Pinot Meunier, of which 35% is reserve juice.

Rich, deep, sophisticated in a beautiful copper color. Deep. Yellow apple, spiced ginger, white flowers, red cherry, brioche.

Last year when I tried this, my opinion that Pet Nats couldn’t be deep, complex, sophisticated wines was forever changed. In that year, Brand’s blend of Pinot Blanc and Sylvaner has made a name for itself. It’s about as lean as anything at 10%. Very German - precise, direct, ordered. Screaming acid with zero sugar makes for a salty citrus thing. Sour lemon and smokey sea shells.

This is my second go at Von der Fels from Keller, the man many think makes the best Rieslings on the planet today. While I thought his entry levels were a little bit of an acid flex, Von der Fels again hits outer worldly levels of beauty through smoke, flinty fruits - pear, grapefruit, some spice. Supreme treat for Riesling nerds.

Texas is a wild frontier with all the creative freedom and little regulation. So, for instance, a whole cluster carbonic concrete aged blend of both French and Italian grapes. Southold intended these pressings for other blends, recognized they needed more time to evolve, then reassembled into Her Song in my Head. It’s expressive and balanced in a medium body. Dried strawberries, dried sour cherries, wild blackberries, iodine, and lavender.

I usually hate VA, but here I felt it makes a better wine and brings this into the third dimension. VA too often hides a clunky bottle of fermenting juice. Oh, and there is texture, too - beautiful texture. Then sour kumquats, bright apricots, briny lemons, and chamomile.

Exceptional 90/10 Syrah Grenache “Nouveau.” A sea of whole cluster carbonic out there - so many chunky and sour and unharmonious. Octobre is an ethereal integration of high pitched perfumed aromatics, red fruit and a little bite. I was shocked this is mostly Syrah. Look at that cranberry color! Light and fruity with slight iodine, murky as the best rustic Beaujolais.

Ovum somehow escapes their deserved recognition. They have the attention of Terry Theise (distributes), but you don’t hear much buzz or excitement with each seasonal release. Off the Grid is big and expressive. It tingles my nose hairs. It’s naval orange blossom, flint, smoke, and petrol. The slightest off-dry, quietly confident.
