{screwcap, 14.5%} Deep garnet red - no purple or black. Mostly youthful nose, of plums, dark chocolate, a tiny hint of tobacco, and tiniest smidge of banana character. The Grenache I’d guess. The palate is medium/full-bodied, with spicy black fruit flavours, some earth too -Mourvèdre quality - medium acidity and low/medium powdery tannins. Not especially oaky at all. I reckon there’s even some banana that makes it onto the palate. It has an even presence along the tongue but somehow finishes quite short, surprisingly so. Not too hot, despite the alcohol but somehow lacks intensity and depth of flavour. Will certainly hold for an age, might be worth the wait with fingers crossed for some true evolution and complexity, cause it’s not really here at the moment.

Moderate yellow. Lanolin, hay, hint of toast and yes, still a grassy element. A weighty semillon in the mouth due to the (relatively high) 12.5% alcohol and fruit purity/denseness. Creamy, lowish acid, only mid development. At once light but full which is the paradox than HV semillon can pull off. Some slightly coarse phenolics on the back palate from an over extracted wine making approach I'm guessing. Ready to drink, very much top tier and will taper on a very long slow fade under Stelvin over the next 10 years but little to be gained apart from that tertiary toast/honey profile of a forgotten bottle.

12/26/19, 2:29 PM - Great review. Looking forward to my bottle. This really blew me away at the Cellar door a couple of years ago. The tasting wasn't too long after I had tried the 2005 Vat 1 which was selling for almost triple the price of the Petersons which i thought was just as good!

Bland. Not drinking well? Will have to try again.
  • NoDivision commented:

9/18/19, 4:31 PM - Despite the poor vintage i remember this wine was drinking really well on release. Definitely not one for aging though. This is their "drink now" semillon. You want to be buying the 2018 or the newly released 2019 version of this wine right now.

Outstanding, from the instant the bottle is poured in to the decanter and the aroma bursts forth, to the finish on the final drop. As per my note from 2017. 95 again. Won't touch another one of these for a decade, as have only two left. Happily the Hunter and Mount Pleasant have had some more cracking vintages since 2014, so I can enjoy and stock up on some younger Rosehills.
  • NoDivision commented:

3/31/19, 2:30 PM - Was at the cellar door last Friday. The 17 Rosehill and OPOH are both great and a must buy. OPOH is drinking incredibly right now, wheras Rosehill needs a lot of time it would seem. Right now for $25 you can taste the entire range which is huge and includes the 2014 Maurice Oshea.

Small Winemakers Centre: Spice, raspberry, ash and cherry. Palate shows a bit darker fruit profile with well judged structure and medium length. Doesn't quite show the x-factor that this wine sometimes can when young but still an enjoyable drink.

1/12/19, 3:42 AM - Was an interesting vintage for Thommo's reds. Certainly better than the year before. For me the Dam Block was a stand out. Salivating over the 2017 release.....

Hunter Valley - 4 Cellar Doors (Hunter Valley): {screwcap, 14%, $50} Haven’t the years caught up with the price of this label? That said, this has a beautiful savoury nose of blackberries, with an integrated palate of the same basic flavor, tinged with spice. Even palate, medium weight, little oak evident (good to see) and with a medium long finish. Nice wine with some years ahead, almost justifying its price.
  • NoDivision commented:

10/9/18, 3:45 AM - @Bsmith457 the last bottle i had needed a ridiculously long decant. I had a glass sitting there to keep trying and honestly for the first 2 hours you would think it was a bargain bin wine. Seems like its gone to sleep....3+ hours before it woke up for me.

10/4/18, 10:41 PM - Love your latest notes and choice of wineries (literally 4 of my 5 favourites - add Gundog). Sadly I think Chateau Francois might be done for, haven't seen it opened since i visited in late 2016. Heard that Don may have had some more health issues. I feel quite lucky to have ever been able to try his Semillon now.....

Just like most of the Tyrrells 18 sems, very low acidity but with very big and generous fruit characteristics. Not what you would normally expect from Tyrrells or a young Stevens Sem, but as Bruce says, this vintage is a now drinking style and hes right, this is not one for the cellar. Enjoyable enough right now but very different compared to previous vintages.
  • NoDivision commented:

9/24/18, 10:14 PM - Its certainly the biggest and boldest tasting at the moment. It doesn't fit the usual Tyrrells semillon mold of - taste now then say goodbye to your bottles for 5+ years :) Which is nice for a change.

Hunter Whistlestop - the road less travelled #4 (Hunter Valley): Medium minus intensity aromas of blackberry and slight peppery spice, pretty berried fruit. Jubey blackberry fruit married to drying chalky tannins all travelling long, young and a little simple with some alcohol heat on the finish.
  • NoDivision commented:

8/8/18, 2:13 AM - You guys need to get yourselves back out to Mudgee it seems. 15 & 16 vintages were the complete opposite of what the hunter experienced, and many of those wines are now releasing or will release next year. Has always been a bad stigma around Mudgee wines, but its generally passed on from old people with old ideas.

  • NoDivision commented:

    8/9/18, 2:16 AM - Hey Chatters,
Huntington Estate are always producing great Shiraz and Cabernet.
    Robert Stein for excellent Riesling.
Logan for the beautiful cellar door and their Mudgee Ridge of Tears Shiraz is always a huge standout (The Orange aint too shabby either).
Newest Cellardoor i visited this year based on a recommendation was "Slowfox" which ended up being a big favourite of the group I was with. Tempranillo, Cabernet Blend and some other good reds. Seemed like a very small producer.

Keep up the great reviews, would love to hear what you think of your trip to Mudgee.

    Cheers!

Tyrrell's cellar door tasting session - 2017 reds (Pokolbin, NSW): Another of the relatively new single vineyard wines. I think this is the third or fourth release from this vineyard? More density and darker fruit alongside the Mother’s. Also in very good QPR range at $30 p/ bottle. My pick of the single vineyard range.
  • NoDivision commented:

5/22/18, 5:26 AM - Looks like my notes were similar to yours from the tasting I attended on the weekend. This was definitely a surprise and my pick of the sub $50 wines. I found the Stevens to be quite light in comparison and a little disappointing.

The other half bottle tasted 3 - 4 days later: Not mellowed as much as hoped. Tannin remains musty or stale on the palate (a bit like the odour of grandfather's near abandoned workshop at the bottom of the garden).
  • NoDivision commented:

4/16/18, 4:06 PM - Agree with BBPP. Sounds like you got a bad bottle. Read through the reviews from some of the really experienced tasters on this wine - The tannin is extremely fine on this wine and as many have said, seems like a much more early drinker than previous vintages. Doesnt give any impression that it will go the distance, but it is absolutely singing already.

It's a shame they have stopped making that wine as aging worthy... It does state on the bottle now that it is for immediate consumption.
Kind of snow peas with a dash of lime and light yellow fruits.
A interesting and lower alcohol (10%) option, great value.
A must if you are over passion fruit ;)
  • NoDivision commented:

12/21/16, 10:39 PM - Halliday still rates this wine at 95 points and says "Drink now, in 5, 10, or even 20 years with total confidence"

  • NoDivision commented:

12/23/16, 2:50 AM - I was at the vineyard 2 months ago and I do remember thinking that some of the prices of wines were massive rip offs considering they were so much cheaper at Dan Murphy's - and specifically the elizabeth semillon. The elizabeth at Dans has always been around the $13 - 14 Mark and a lot more at the vineyard. I just took a look at the Dan murphys website though and the elizabeth is all of a sudden $25 a bottle so call me confused as hell. I actually had a 2016 at lunch today and thought it was a lot better than the 2015. 15 & 16 vintages were tough going in the hunter valley, but i have had some really amazing 16 semillons, particularly the margan and the tyrrells.

  • NoDivision commented:

9/11/17, 4:30 AM - They dont offer it for tasting at the Cellar Door anymore. They sell the 8 Acres Semillon as their entry level wine there. They told me its because the Elizabeth is so wildly available at retail now. The 8 Acres is a very different style and quite nice.

You just can't go wrong with hunter '14s. Many would argue infanticide drinking so soon - and I'd probably be one of them - but I bought long and was curious. This is really enjoyable now. Some bright red fruits coming out of a solid black fruit core. Some smokiness too. Lovely now and will be cracking in around 10 years.
  • NoDivision commented:

6/30/17, 6:53 AM - Interested to know, did you decant at all? Had one at a restaurant with friends about a month ago and it really made me realise how much this wine needs either a lot of air or a lot of time to rest in the bottle.

Dark garnet in the glass. Very aromatic, blueberry, floral and spicy notes. Palate is a lovely balance of tangy acidity and dark fruit: blueberries, cassis. Some steel and pepper in the finish. I am not a fan of big fruity typical Aussie/Cali style wines, and I love this. Interesting to see the enormous range of ratings this wine gets...fruit bomb fans don't like it, savory wine fans find it very nice indeed.
  • NoDivision commented:

2/22/17, 3:24 AM - Check your Dan Murphys to see if they have any of the 2012 in their rack. I was lucky enough to get a 2012 and 2013 to compare and the 12 is much much better.
