To say this amarone hits hard is an understatement. I have two black eyes from the experience.
However, it is an experience worth the price of admission. Deep color, with classic amarone profile. Well integrated and balanced which hides the 17% alcohol. Perfectly suited for rich fatty meats.
Certainly not for the faint at heart. Loved it!

It surprises me when I read a review like the one from Psmith basically calling it furniture polish. Give it a few hours of air and just enjoy it.

My last and still an amazing bottle of wine. As good as much more expensive NAPA cult wines. Still Rich, crazy complex and great tannins to back it all up. Looong finish. Decades of life left. I'll buy anyone's bottles they care to part with!

I have been a huge fan of Rocca Family wines. I had documented this 2004 vintage on several occasions as the one I think is the best to date. However, the last two bottles I have had are starting to fade a bit. Still fabulous but drink them now.

4/19/17, 3:36 PM - The 2004 Rocca in my opinion is the best vintage they have ever made and I have tried them all. The early vintages had a different winemaker in Celia Welch who got this one just right. On release, they were selling for about $65 per bottle and a few years back, some were released as a library release for double that. Really good stuff. I actually had one just last week as where I had thought they were starting to fade a few years back, but I was wrong. It was still delicious! I may be willing to part with a couple but I think more as a trade. What did you have in mind? RJurman@aol.com

4/19/17, 3:56 PM - I actually have quite the extensive collection but I don't keep my cellartracker up to date. All perfectly stored. I will check later. Thanks.

4/19/17, 4:16 PM - I know. I have not been there yet but have an open invitation. I actually have an 04 Magnum that Mary signed some years ago on my birthday. I'm torn because I wanted to put it on my desk but did not want to ruin the wine. In the end, it sits in a Eurocave upright where I can always see it. No worries if I find something you don't have. You have an extensive inventory. Any suggestions?

4/19/17, 7:26 PM - I have a deal for you. How about (3) 2004 Rocca Cabs for (1) of the 2013 Schrader CCS Beckstoffer to Katon? I'm not sure what you paid for it, but on release it seems equitable. Thanks

  • RJurman commented:

4/20/17, 4:30 AM - Impossible to find... Just let me know. If you paid $500 it's probably not fair but if you paid release, then it seems fair. If you prefer, I can take out of the 3 04, and substitute an 2011 Scarecrow M'Etain? Personally, I would stay with the Rocca but some prefer the M

    4/20/17, 1:57 PM - Oops, I meant (2) Rocca and (1) M'Etain. I'm sorry. Did not mean that

4/22/17, 8:42 AM - Intriguing offer but I can't do Thursday. Thank you for the offer though. I do love Gallaghers though. Another great steakhouse is Del Frisco's Double Eagle. That's usually where we go when in the city. As for the wine, I may have to check your inventory again. I do really want your bottle, but (4) is a little steep and I would be giving up a wine you can't find anywhere, plus losing money at the point. Let me think on it a bit

4/22/17, 9:20 AM - Hi again Andy. My email is RJurman@aol.com. If you want to take this off the public notes, send me yours. I also just checked on my inventory of the 04 and I took a picture you may want to see. One of the bottles called your name.

Well balanced but very one dimensional at this stage, grippy tannins. I expected more. Will hold my other bottles.

3/19/17, 5:21 PM - I felt the exact same way. It was a mistake to open so young.

1st Paleo for me and with 3 '08s in holding, I figured it was time to check in since we were having braised short ribs, and it was in fact a great pairing. Deep opaque ruby coloring. Aromas of dark fruit, graphite, tar, green and jalapeño pepper, and herbs. Medium body and acid, long finish, and flavors of dark fruits, minerals, and a touch of herbs. Tannins are lightly grippy but pretty smooth. It's a good wine, but not very good QPR. Curious to see what age does.

Wow! This wine was truly spectacular even at this stage. It is young, and a bit tannic but I can't see this wine getting any better. Unfortunately, it did not last long enough to truly evaluate it over time, but I have three more and will not go near them for a least a few years.
  • RJurman commented:

1/3/15, 11:51 AM - Perhaps I should have been more specific. This wine should age incredibly well, but I am not sure that it will get any better with age. It may get more complex, and will certainly change but it is just so good now. That was all I meant.

Another 9 months past, and my last bottle of the 04. I'm really going to miss it. Still as good as ever. Absolutely my favorite vintage. Still the most fruit driven vintage, but I still maintain it is the most balanced. It just works. Thanks Mary and Celia!

9/15/13, 3:09 PM - I know John but I originally purchased this wine at $65.00 and the $110.00 - $120.00 it is at now is not in the budget. Thanks anyway
