Violets and red berries on the nose. Cranberry, raspberry, and spice. Light yet concentrated. It's a shame that this is my last bottle.

11/14/14, 10:08 AM - I popped a bottle of this early in the week and I was amazed at how well it held up on the counter with the cork reinserted. I was perhaps even better on day 4! That's surprising to me given this wine's new world fruit forward tendencies.

Solid cab with silky tannins. Great aromatics for $11!!! Had to try this based on the WS92....does not disappoint for a weekday drinker. might buy a few more as cellar defenders....

11/8/14, 4:36 PM - Tasting this vintage now for the first time. You nailed it. This is a good call from Steiman. And it's different than prior vintages of H3 Cab. Less fake oak. More real fruit. I'm a fan.

Darker in color than what I would expect from a Pinot; nose of ripe strawberry and dark cherry and graphite; initial taste exhibited darker red fruits hiding behind the minerals and graphite; very evident spice characteristic that I wouldn't expect with a Pinot (possibly due to 100% whole cluster?); this is dark and intense; firm acid that softens a bit over time but is typical for Jamie's wines (which I love); firmer tannic structure; medium finish.

Consumed over four days and day four was the most enjoyable; put through the Vinturi on day four which helped to coax a subtle citrus note that I didn't get earlier; tannins still going strong, but as I come to expect with all of Jamie's wines, very balanced. Overall, very enjoyable now, but let it breathe or utilize a long decant. It's only going to get better.

Spectacular. What Sojourn does best is site-specific yet fruit forward California Pinot Noir and this is a great example of their style. Bright light magenta in color but *full* of effortless power and finesse. Aromatically this is an amazing explosion of perfectly-ripened strawberries, briar patch, and orange peel. So light on its feet but it gets serious on the palate. The medium/slightly-full bodied mouthfeel is surprising given how light in color it is. Just brilliant across the palate and on the finish. A tremendous accomplishment here.

Classic California Pinot Noir. Wonderful.

The best KB I've had to date. Stylistically this is dialed back. Less extraction, less perceived alcohol. Energetic dark plum, black cherries with some herbs and smoke. Impressed. 14.6% ABV
  • RobertDwyer commented:

6/16/14, 6:28 PM - Nice note. I think they're a quality producer that's going to successfully pivot from being stereotyped as producing overripe wines. Just a little pricey for my taste. Happy Father's Day!

This is a soft, smooth wine with well-integrated tannins, but it has a jammy sweetness that dominates the fruit profile that I found very off-putting.

Big, modern style Pinot. 15.4% alc, and you could taste the heat. That being said, it was a pleasant bottle. No better than the Sonoma Coast bottling though, but much more expensive. Not worth it.

4/21/14, 5:56 AM - *Great* guidance here. I think the 2012 Sonoma Coast is a terrific value in the $30-$33 range. I saw an offer come up for the Jenkins and I couldn't imagine it being twice as good. Your note confirms this. You saved me $60! ;)

Lots of red fruit and acid. Noticeable amount of oak on the nose and palate (not used to that with Bedrock). Felt disjointed and in an awkward phase. Going with 90+ because there is a good chance it will come around and harmonize with time. Power without weight. Drink 2015+. 14.2% ABV

Across a few bottles I think the 2010 is better than the 2009. Whereas the 2009 can get a bit boozy at times (almost Port-like) the 2010 shows better balance but still that signature Alto Moncayo full throttle fruit-driven flavor profile intermingled with savory notes. A stunning value in the mid-$30s. Drinks like an $80 wine. The real question is whether this is better than Clio? On average I think Clio delivers more consistent value, but man - this 2010 Alto Moncayo is tremendous. Both deserve consideration in your cellar.
  • RobertDwyer commented:

3/21/14, 2:29 PM - Sounds like we've got very similar tastes! Clio, Alto Moncayo, and Triga are all right there as favorites for me. Juan Gil 18 Meses fits nicely between the $12 Juan Gil silver label and Clio at ~$35. Alto Moncayo Veraton is a great buy just over $20 if you can find it at a good price. Such good values coming out of Spain!

Bottle tasted at Honig Wines Dinner at Culinary Institute, Hyde Park, NY. Beautiful ruby red in glass with wonderful fresh fruit nose. Still slightly disjointed with the tannins slightly fighting the fruit (much more so than the 2011) Also, a little too much ABV for a Honig. Definitely can see this integrating beautifully in another 24 months. Wonderful mouthfeel and mid-palate. Highly recommended and a definite buy for me. 92-93 pts.
  • RobertDwyer commented:

3/15/14, 2:22 PM - Thanks for the early insight on this reliable favorite that we're all looking forward to in 2012! Your note reads like typical Honig Napa Cab. Immediately upon release and for about a year after it's a little quirky. I begin to wonder whether it's a so-so vintage and each bottle I crack from there out gets better and better. It's not an aging thing by any means - it just needs a *little* time to warm up.

Delicious...easy to drink; creamy, slightly spicy, bright, ripe strawberry, lots of fruit; very little acid and soft, subtle tannins. This is scrumptious and fun to drink, but, for the majority of the time, my palate prefers a little more acid, a little less "over-the-top" fruitiness and more minerality. Still, for what it is, and for what I wanted tonight, it's pleasing, no rough edges, easy to drink, and, once again, delicious.
  • RobertDwyer commented:

3/5/14, 12:31 PM - Well said Trent. It's not always what I'm in the mood for either but when I'm looking for something a more full bodied (without getting into Napa Cabs) it hits the spot. Decanted at noon for my GF and my Christmas dinner at 5pm.

When I first opened the wine at noon, I gave it a quick taste to make sure all was ok. It reminded me of the two other bottles I've had over the last several months after RP's 100 point rating came out. I assumed all was well and my GF and I would have a special treat for our Christmas dinner.

After the 5 hour decant, we poured the wine, enjoyed our meal, company and conversation. Over the course of the hour the wine was open and we were enjoying our meal, each additional pour of the wine brought each of us wondering what was going on. By (small) pour 3, each of us realized the wine was slightly corked. Subtle at first, it became more and more pronounced as we worked our way through the bottle. We ended up dumping the last glass and a half of the bottle.

Thankfully, I sill have 4 more bottles of this excellent offering to enjoy on future days.
  • RobertDwyer commented:

I was anxious to try this after adoring the 2010 across a bunch of bottles, but the 2011 comes through in a big way. The 2011 is perhaps a bit smoother and softer around the edges than the 2010, which can get a little rough at times. The alcohol (15.5%) is incredibly well concealed. The wine is just so utterly enjoyable to consume. Huge, gorgeous aromatics of rich fruit, vanilla, and a supporting touch of herbs. Coats the glass but amazingly doesn't feel heavy. A remarkable achievement. I can't think of a better wine in the $35-$40 price range. A great alternative to overpriced Napa Cabs.
  • RobertDwyer commented:

12/6/13, 5:45 AM - No experiencing with what these taste like aged. The only data I have to triangulate is how well the Juan Gil holds up on the counter over night under a stopper. I think it's better the 2nd day. I'd treat the Clio like Caymus/SS: Enjoyable even on early release but can age nicely 5-10 years.

I usually reserve my commentary for after my more formal tasting notes, but this is a special occasion as this is my QPR of 2013. This beats the 2010 Juan Gil Monastrell from several months ago that I thought was my sure winner.

Popped and poured, let sit in the glass for 30 minutes; wow, such an explosively floral nose with streaks of mocha and dark cherry, very enjoyable to let it sit, then swirl, then sniff; palate of ripe red raspberry, dark cherry, milk chocolate, streaks of minerals and spice, then maybe a bit of vanilla creaminess; great weight and mouthfeel; tight acid and firm, sweet tannins that grip you on the end (in a good way). After several hours of being open and on Day 2 this wine was still going strong and exhibiting everything that I've come to love from these Bedrock wines. More likely than not, I'm drinking all of these in the next 12-15 months.

Let me first say that I liked the wine. However, it is being compared to a Radio-Coteau 2010 Savoy I very recently drank. This Kutch has prominent herbal notes, a very bitter cherry note, and drying tannins. All these taken together, in moderation, can be a good thing. In this case they all add up to be too much. The delicious factor is not there. Wasn't excited about the last glass and that tells me a lot. (the RC is head and shoulders better) Wondering how this will age. Afraid there just isn't enough fruit to outlast the bitter herbal notes. 13.45% ABV
  • RobertDwyer commented:

11/18/13, 8:08 AM - I rated this wine 83 points, but I think we essentially agree on this wine vs. Radio-Coteau. Drying tannins are, for me, not a good thing in any way in a Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir. I was so spooked by tasting 2 bottles of Kutch Savoy that I've refrained from buying Radio-Coteau Savoy. I've got to try a bottle of that Radio-Coteau Savoy now. I've got one on hand here but it's for a case club friend who has pre-paid for it (not you). I've had such universally terrific experience with RC across a number of their bottlings I have no doubt it would be terrific like you say.

10/30/13, 8:11 PM - I've come to the conclusion that to experience what Merry Edwards has to offer you have to step up to the single vineyard wines. Meredith and Klopp for example. So I think the appellation wines are overpriced for what they deliver. And 2011 has been a problematic vintage for me for Sonoma Coast/RRV Pinot. But back up the truck in 2012!

If you like Juan Gil's silver label at around $12 this is the next step up from Gil Family Estates. Same parent company but a separate winemaking facility a couple hundred yards down the road from Juan Gil proper. Gorgeous rich fruit but it never ever gets over ripe or raisiny. Like milk chocolate on the palate. 15.5% alcohol but it's sufficiently downplayed. Compares favorably to Caymus SS for a third the cost. Price a consideration, this is a front-runner for my wine of the year.

After having the 2010 El Nido Clio earlier in the year I feel safe in saying this wine is a junior version. This is not as structured and doesn't offer the various layers of flavors as the Clio (which has a healthy portion of Cabernet) but it is none the less delicious and a great QPR for the $12 I paid. I will definitely buy a few more bottles.
  • RobertDwyer commented:

7/2/13, 3:34 AM - Fastastic insightful tasting note. I'm glad you enjoyed it.

Discussing how/whether this wine provides a viable windows into Clio (at a more affordable price) is really interesting to me. I'm really bummed when an entry level wine doesn't seem to be pointed in the same direction as a higher end wine. I can accept if the excitement level is lower on the entry level wine but if it doesn't bear sufficient resemblance to the higher wine I'm left wondering whether I should pony up.

A fair comparison along these lines might be Meiomi to Bell Glos? Any other wineries you can think of that do this well?

Actually, I was trying to think of a US producers who has a portofilio similar to Gil Family Estates (not just Juan Gil and El Nido but Atteca, Atalaya, etc etc). Closest thing I've been able to come up with is Wagner Family Estates but that's mostly because of the way they chose to use separate brands for different varieties and the way Caymus SS is on the same level as El Nido proper.

Interesting thing here - I've never had an "off" bottle of Meiomi across a couple cases. Until now.

Although I rated a prior bottle 91 points, the bottle I opened last night was dull and almost pruney. So strange! It's a screw cap so it's not like it was corked. But it was definitely off. But I can't say which flaw it might have been so I'll rate it for what I tasted.

First I should admit that I'm not a big fan of Burgundian wines...way too subtle for my palate but I thoroughly enjoy this beautiful wine. Nose was earthy with mild spices. It was rather sharp when I opened the bottle so decanted for over an hour before pouring. This just evolved to a more delicious wine with every sip and by the end of the evening it was singing. Palate was smooth and then smoother, elegant and soft. Hard for me to pull out specific flavors...soft fruit, subtle spices. It was simply lovely, different from other Sojourns, which are among my very favorite pinot noirs. Definitely a new experience for me and I look forward to the next bottle.

4/2/13, 4:36 PM - The tone of your note aligns perfectly with my feelings on Sojourn. So reliably delicious but each vineyard shows a different style. Popped a 2010 Gap's Crown tonight and it was outstanding as well. But Ridgetop is a favorite too. Cheers.

Good grenache character with medium body, some herbs and spice. This lost me after half a glass though. Ultimately a bit sweet and a bit hot. Disappointing and would not purchase again.

Overly hot, medicinal, and over ripe. Nearly disgusting at times. Gloppy. I don't get it. Would not buy anything from this producer again.
  • RobertDwyer commented:

2/23/13, 10:06 AM - When I've tasted cooked wine before it was more muted than this bottle. I guess it's possible, but I doubt it. That said, knowing this producer has a good reputation, I can't see another wine enthusiast drinking from this same bottle alongside me and saying "I don't know what you're thinking, this is really good." So I can see that the bottle was off in some way. But I'm just not sure how so I'll refrain from buying more until I have another affordable way to taste before buying.

13.9% alcohol. Strikingly dark color. Intensely dark. Red-black. Ripe on the nose -- blackberry jam and black cherry pie. Hints of earth and spice. In the mouth, vibrant and rich, with a dark fruit profile that works and has strong acidity. A solid drink. A-

My notes totally agree with Annie's. This bottle came off as flat and boring with a bitter finish. This isn't the first bottle of WS I've been disappointed with. A 2009 Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir that's off the mark? I don't get this producer.

2/11/13, 12:51 PM - I'm through trying with WS. I've had about 4 bottlings at this point and none have impressed me. Always enjoy your notes! Thanks for sharing.

Morgans own description of this wine is spot on, with one exception. It is a bruiser, deep dark fruit, spice, and depth. I think he did what he could with the fruit, but unfortunately it's over the line on ripeness. It comes off a bit gloppy, a bit heavy, with sweetness. I've never come across this issue before with Bedrock. Couldn't get through the bottle in one sitting.

What a disappointment. Hopefully this was an off bottle. Color was a beautiful light ruby. There was NO fruit, only alcohol on the nose even after being open for 3 hours. This was harsh with alcohol being predominate on the palate. The finish was bitter and finally, at the very end of the evening, the flavor of cherries came through. This is the first time I've compared wines in my tasting notes. Last night we opened a 2009 Sojourn Sangiacomo Vineyard which was equal in price to this WS Sonoma Coast. The difference was huge and a powerful eye opener. Why would I continue to pay this much money for a William Selyem wine that doesn't begin to compare to a pinot noir like the Sojourn we enjoyed last night? Hmmm, gonna have to start paying attention.

2/10/13, 7:01 PM - Wow - I couldn't agree with you more. I tweeted to a friend that I thought it was flat with a bitter finish and you note both of these attributes in your note as well. Nice call.

(14.5%) 100% Monastrell (aka Mourvèdre) – Sweet, dark, lush fruit. Full-bodied, rich, forward and overpowering. Coupled with a bit of cloying this isn't a match for my preferences.

2/6/13, 7:25 AM - I enjoyed this the first time I tried it at The Capital Grille as part of one of their Generous Pour events. But as I've tracked down various bottlings of it since, some of which have been mysteriously non-vintage, they've been quite huge and fierce. I don't mind the lush fruit but sometimes-drying tannins are off putting for me. A little inconsistent...but cheap!

Nice bottle that opened up after 40 minutes. Nose is nowhere near the 08 - neither is the finish.

A savage wall of tannins assure this one will clog up your wine collection for however many years you can stand to look at it. Some admirable traits here but ultimately this is like the worst of 2005 Bordeaux: It needs to be aged for years and it's unclear whether it will ever be an enjoyable beverage.
  • RobertDwyer commented:

1/15/13, 12:18 PM - I don't think it's a poorly made wine. It's just a style that's hard for me to appreciate. So that's why the negative comments and yet the relatively positive "good" rating.

Really excited to to taste this after SF Chronicle winemaker of the year. Just 12.2% alcohol. Aromatically present immediately upon opening. Olives, black pepper, corriander and just a hint of red fruit hiding in the background. Absolutely would have pegged it for a Chateauneuf-du-Pape on the nose, but where the low alcohol levels shows is on the palate. To be honest it's a little hollow, but it's such an interesting wine it's easily forgiven. Light acidity. Slightly chalky tannins with a touch of menthol in a high toned finish. Really pretty package (bottle/label/easily penetrated wax enclosure). A lot to like here. I have a second bottle of this I'll look forward to trying in a year or two but I doubt I'll be able to wait that long.
  • RobertDwyer commented:

1/10/13, 10:45 AM - I don't think the hollow mid-palate will change with time. But like I said it wasn't necessarily a flaw, but rather the most noticeable way the relatively low alcohol presented itself. I do think the chalky tannins will smooth out. I liked them as they were though! Great wine. Really a joy to taste, examine, and discuss.
