11/20/14, 9:50 AM - I just reloaded on this one. Terrific wine in the mid $30s.
11/14/14, 10:08 AM - I popped a bottle of this early in the week and I was amazed at how well it held up on the counter with the cork reinserted. I was perhaps even better on day 4! That's surprising to me given this wine's new world fruit forward tendencies.
11/8/14, 4:36 PM - Tasting this vintage now for the first time. You nailed it. This is a good call from Steiman. And it's different than prior vintages of H3 Cab. Less fake oak. More real fruit. I'm a fan.
9/14/14, 1:45 PM - I just opened the 2nd of 3 bottles of this I have and I'm not liking it at all. I think I'll put a stopper in it and check back tomorrow based on your note. Thanks.
7/23/14, 7:30 PM - Not across the board. Their appellation bottlings can be terrific values. But certain single vineyard bottlings can be really special. Ridgetop, Gap's Crown and Rodgers Creek are 3 of my favorites.
6/16/14, 6:28 PM - Nice note. I think they're a quality producer that's going to successfully pivot from being stereotyped as producing overripe wines. Just a little pricey for my taste. Happy Father's Day!
5/30/14, 7:24 PM - Oh dear! How disappointing.
4/21/14, 5:56 AM - *Great* guidance here. I think the 2012 Sonoma Coast is a terrific value in the $30-$33 range. I saw an offer come up for the Jenkins and I couldn't imagine it being twice as good. Your note confirms this. You saved me $60! ;)
4/19/14, 1:31 PM - This aligns with what I'm complaining about when I say I don't like some of the wines from Bedrock and Carlisle. They make some great wines for sure, but many are overpriced duds.
4/16/14, 7:57 PM - Wow! Where did you buy it? Do you have more? I'd like to try it.
4/7/14, 8:35 AM - Disjointed and awkward. 90+! Outstanding!C'mon jtinto, your Bedrock bias is showing here. With a short track record with this specific bottling how can you rate it for the future?
3/26/14, 9:16 AM - Your lack of enthusiasm for this wine is interesting to me. We seem to have similar taste in CA Pinot but this is a definitely split (though I didn't drink for the same bottle as you obviously). It would be cool to have a panel of like 10 benchmark wines we could list for people to try to see where their fit in the ripeness spectrum.
3/26/14, 9:12 AM - Dehlinger has been consistently on the bold side of Pinot for me. 15.4% is taking it beyond KB territory. I bet I'd like it! :)
3/26/14, 9:11 AM - Hmm. Somehow I expect more at this price point. How are you liking 2012 CA Pinots in general? I've been less than blown away. Solid, but non-spectacular.
3/26/14, 9:10 AM - I really like this producer but I've on tried one or two of their CdRs. Glad to hear the CdP is great too!
3/21/14, 2:29 PM - Sounds like we've got very similar tastes! Clio, Alto Moncayo, and Triga are all right there as favorites for me. Juan Gil 18 Meses fits nicely between the $12 Juan Gil silver label and Clio at ~$35. Alto Moncayo Veraton is a great buy just over $20 if you can find it at a good price. Such good values coming out of Spain!
3/15/14, 2:22 PM - Thanks for the early insight on this reliable favorite that we're all looking forward to in 2012! Your note reads like typical Honig Napa Cab. Immediately upon release and for about a year after it's a little quirky. I begin to wonder whether it's a so-so vintage and each bottle I crack from there out gets better and better. It's not an aging thing by any means - it just needs a *little* time to warm up.
3/5/14, 12:31 PM - Well said Trent. It's not always what I'm in the mood for either but when I'm looking for something a more full bodied (without getting into Napa Cabs) it hits the spot. I ordered a couple bottles of '12 Clark & Telephone at a work dinner in San Jose a couple months ago ($60/btl, not bad!) and it drew raves.
1/7/14, 8:06 AM - I haven't checked in with that tier of Two Hands bottlings but seeing this note reminded me I should. Great juice when it can be found for around $20 as I recall!
12/30/13, 6:10 AM - Strikingly similar to the Clos du Val. You might like it! ;)
12/29/13, 5:33 PM - Bummer! So sad when a wine is annoyingly/slightly corked like this. Glad you've got more because when this is on it's ON as you know.
12/20/13, 2:08 PM - Thanks! Looking forward to your thoughts. Cheers.
12/16/13, 9:39 AM - Great note! I think you've described it very well.
12/7/13, 6:58 AM - Nice note! Looking forward to trying these.
12/6/13, 5:45 AM - No experiencing with what these taste like aged. The only data I have to triangulate is how well the Juan Gil holds up on the counter over night under a stopper. I think it's better the 2nd day. I'd treat the Clio like Caymus/SS: Enjoyable even on early release but can age nicely 5-10 years.
11/26/13, 6:47 AM - Better QPR than Juan Gil!? You're nuts Trent! ;)
11/18/13, 8:08 AM - I rated this wine 83 points, but I think we essentially agree on this wine vs. Radio-Coteau. Drying tannins are, for me, not a good thing in any way in a Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir. I was so spooked by tasting 2 bottles of Kutch Savoy that I've refrained from buying Radio-Coteau Savoy. I've got to try a bottle of that Radio-Coteau Savoy now. I've got one on hand here but it's for a case club friend who has pre-paid for it (not you). I've had such universally terrific experience with RC across a number of their bottlings I have no doubt it would be terrific like you say.
10/30/13, 8:11 PM - I've come to the conclusion that to experience what Merry Edwards has to offer you have to step up to the single vineyard wines. Meredith and Klopp for example. So I think the appellation wines are overpriced for what they deliver. And 2011 has been a problematic vintage for me for Sonoma Coast/RRV Pinot. But back up the truck in 2012!
10/28/13, 8:28 AM - Nice! Glad you liked it. The Radio-Coteau Pinots have been delivering for me big time (most scores in upper end of the 91-95 range). Their 2010s are amazing. Hope the 2011s show as well.
10/17/13, 6:08 PM - As I sit here sipping a 2012 Lapierre Morgon thinking the same exact thing. The core flavor profile just isn't to my liking. I appreciate the lower alcohol but I'm just not crazy about the flavor of this grape.
10/14/13, 7:12 AM - Nice. A 4-pack of 2009 Alto Moncayo I ordered this summer just arrived. Looking forward to cracking one open!
10/8/13, 6:15 PM - Wish I would have bought some of this especially now. Will buy some next I can!
7/28/13, 6:05 PM - Thanks Lon. I hear 'ya on the bulk buy. Can't imagine having too much of this on hand. The great thing is - popping a bottle of this feels like a splurge, but when you compare it to domestic Napa Cab the price point is on par with what? Honig? Chappellet? Those are some nice wines but this takes it to the next level I think.
7/26/13, 8:27 AM - Too bad we didn't catch a little more value in this one. Sounds like a "get what you pay for" kind of scenario.
7/18/13, 8:29 AM - Wow! That's surprising. Good thing we drank most of it the first night. :)
7/17/13, 11:16 AM - What's the best way to small/taste garrigue? Is it an herb I can buy at the grocery store? Or a plant that occurs mostly in the wild?
7/15/13, 8:07 AM - 95 points! Holy smokes. Tried to find it on wine-searcher but no luck. I'll ask you where you got it next time I see you.
7/2/13, 3:34 AM - Fastastic insightful tasting note. I'm glad you enjoyed it.Discussing how/whether this wine provides a viable windows into Clio (at a more affordable price) is really interesting to me. I'm really bummed when an entry level wine doesn't seem to be pointed in the same direction as a higher end wine. I can accept if the excitement level is lower on the entry level wine but if it doesn't bear sufficient resemblance to the higher wine I'm left wondering whether I should pony up.A fair comparison along these lines might be Meiomi to Bell Glos? Any other wineries you can think of that do this well?Actually, I was trying to think of a US producers who has a portofilio similar to Gil Family Estates (not just Juan Gil and El Nido but Atteca, Atalaya, etc etc). Closest thing I've been able to come up with is Wagner Family Estates but that's mostly because of the way they chose to use separate brands for different varieties and the way Caymus SS is on the same level as El Nido proper.
5/24/13, 4:39 PM - A cooked bottle - very interesting theory! I've got another bottle from the same source. I'll try it soon and post here how it goes. Thanks for the idea!
4/2/13, 4:36 PM - The tone of your note aligns perfectly with my feelings on Sojourn. So reliably delicious but each vineyard shows a different style. Popped a 2010 Gap's Crown tonight and it was outstanding as well. But Ridgetop is a favorite too. Cheers.
2/23/13, 11:53 AM - Uh oh! A little dissension in the ranks on this one.
2/23/13, 10:06 AM - When I've tasted cooked wine before it was more muted than this bottle. I guess it's possible, but I doubt it. That said, knowing this producer has a good reputation, I can't see another wine enthusiast drinking from this same bottle alongside me and saying "I don't know what you're thinking, this is really good." So I can see that the bottle was off in some way. But I'm just not sure how so I'll refrain from buying more until I have another affordable way to taste before buying.
2/11/13, 1:15 PM - Glad to hear you liked this one too. It's a staple in my lineup I go through quickly. Cheers!
2/11/13, 12:51 PM - I'm through trying with WS. I've had about 4 bottlings at this point and none have impressed me. Always enjoy your notes! Thanks for sharing.
2/11/13, 12:50 PM - "Couldn't get through the bottle in one sitting." I've felt like that with a couple wines I've tasted lately. Brutal.
2/10/13, 7:01 PM - Wow - I couldn't agree with you more. I tweeted to a friend that I thought it was flat with a bitter finish and you note both of these attributes in your note as well. Nice call.
2/6/13, 7:25 AM - I enjoyed this the first time I tried it at The Capital Grille as part of one of their Generous Pour events. But as I've tracked down various bottlings of it since, some of which have been mysteriously non-vintage, they've been quite huge and fierce. I don't mind the lush fruit but sometimes-drying tannins are off putting for me. A little inconsistent...but cheap!
1/23/13, 12:18 PM - Oh no! I bought 3 bottles of the 09 hoping it would be as good as the 08. Will open one soon and compare notes.
1/15/13, 12:18 PM - I don't think it's a poorly made wine. It's just a style that's hard for me to appreciate. So that's why the negative comments and yet the relatively positive "good" rating.
1/10/13, 10:45 AM - I don't think the hollow mid-palate will change with time. But like I said it wasn't necessarily a flaw, but rather the most noticeable way the relatively low alcohol presented itself. I do think the chalky tannins will smooth out. I liked them as they were though! Great wine. Really a joy to taste, examine, and discuss.
Thanks for letting us know about this problem. We will review your comments and be in touch soon with an update.
