A bruiser for sure and would be cool to see what it’s like with more time. Menthol, nutmeg, olive brine, bacon, a tinge of rotting meat, funk like Jamaican rum (long pond TECA mark),

11/14/23, 11:34 PM - must be quite intense if it reminds you of long pond TECA......

A very dark colour; the palate is quite noticeably sweet, with dark, slightly burnt fruit and a noticeable spritz, which detracts. Ready to drink now but will keep. Rather expensive at £29.

8/28/20, 2:47 PM - Your bottle probably refermented in the bottle. This bottle is not supposed to have a spirtz.

Medium gold with amber tint
Medium plus aromas or ripe and unripe stonefruit/ honey and rocks/ salt with very pleasant mildly oxidative nutty notes
Full palate which echoes above aromas and additional tamarind quality and a beautiful mineral/ saline aspect at the finish
Medium high/ high acidity and long finish
This wine is simply beautiful at this stage - just a wonderful aged white wine
So glad I bought two bottles as the last one was much more oxidized - price you pay for aged whites

I saw some reviews stating that this was overly-oxidized, but I found it to be in a perfect drinking window. Some age is certainly evident, but still showing tremendous structure and length.

5/3/20, 10:27 AM - possibly bottle variation. Cross my fingers when I open my second bottle.

Bottle oxidized - not past the enjoyment stage but definitely past the point where tasting notes are possible
Just purchased from Garagiste and disappointed as Im assuming this was library release from the winery
I have one more bottle and hopefully this will be better

first sip and I felt like I got punched in the guts. It is massive, powerful, with very powerful dark fruits and dark chocolate bitter notes, lots of tannins. Not really my cup of tea but with 10 years or more of proper storage it can become something quite beautiful. To drink this now is literal infanticide. I strongly advise to try 10 years later with lots of upside. 91 points for now but can gain a few more points with age most likely. I was personally surprised such a serious wine could come from Paso.

9/8/19, 7:58 AM - really could've used a long decant for sure. Unfortunately it was something that was opened by a friend last minute right before going to dinner with everyone so the experience was a bit rushed. Would be very interested to see how this wine develops over time though.

This is a beauty of a wine. The Oakville Cabernet is from the “Rock Cairn” vineyard is a true gem in my humble opinion. This is 100% Cabernet and it is made in the classic old school style of Napa. The color gives away its age a bit with some bricking on the rim and at the core but it still has a nice amount of garnet in the core as well. For a wine that is 23 years old, the nose revealed some very lively fruit tones of black currant, plums, dried black cherry with baking spices, pipe tobacco, fertile tilled earth, cedar/cigar box and some herbs. On the palate it is medium to full bodied, which surprised me a bit with some very refined tannin structure balanced with just the right amount of acidity. Ripe plums, black cherry, currant, dried herbs, tobacco leaf and earth were prevalent and very well integrated/balanced on the palate. The finish was long and beautiful. Over another 4 or 5 hours in the decanter it held up very well. I think this is either just at peak or just edging past peak. It may have another 3 years left, maybe, so I would suggest drinking now or soon.

Tasted good but at the same time tasted extremely young. In fact it reminds me of some very young Chassagne Montrachet Village wine I've had in the past. Currently the wine is a bit disjointed at the moment and feel it needs more time for the oak to better integrate and to further tame the perception of acid. Lots of upside. Would try 5 years later.
  • sung251 commented:

3/4/19, 3:46 PM - I mostly found it disjointed mostly due to the oak profile. I found it to be too obtrusive and the fact that I had the whole bottle by itself without any food didn't do me any favors. I think its drinks fine right now and would go especially well with something like bbq or smoked meats but I felt all the elements had yet to all come together but will do so in several years. But i guess different people have different sweet spots when it comes to drinking it young/old.

2016 Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande Pauillac Red Bordeaux Blend
Tasted during SPEC's Bordeaux tasting in Houston, this was my favorite wine of the tasting. (1st growths, Leoville Las Cases, were not part of the tasting). Massive yet seductive, built for the long haul yet approachable today. It is the personification of balance and reminds me that truly great wines are often made in the fashion where its upside future is obvious while tasting great today at the same time. Would say 94/95 pts today with possible 3-4 additional points in its peak.

2/19/19, 8:26 PM - Yes I was able to taste the Baron. It was also a terrific wine with tons of structure. As delicious as it was, it did not make as strong of an impression as the Pichon Lalande for the 16 vintage. QPR wise personally I would rather spend the money on a Grand Puy Lacoste for the 16 vintage instead of a Pichon Baron if you are looking for a serious structured wine

White - Off-dry
2015 Domaine Huet Vouvray Demi-Sec Clos du Bourg Chenin Blanc
I really need to stop drinking this because I want to see how it is with some age... but its really delicious. The nose is still open and shows wool, earth, lots of pear, quince, and peach, hints of stone, straw, and honey. The palate is vibrant, yet rich, full bodied, yet lithe, a study in paradox maybe? Whatever it is, its damn good. I'm going to try to forget about the other two bottles I have for 5-10 years....
