Clear pale/medium garnet; clean medium nose of dusty work shed, dried figs, slight iodine, charred meat and horse saddle; dry; high acidity; medium plus tannins; medium plus alcohol; medium body; pronounced flavour intensity; palate is tarter with addition of cocoa, black licorice, tar and coffee; long finish; drink now or in 5 years but seems close to peak now; beautiful wine!; notes are for straight out of the bottle; the wine was noticeably subdued after about 30 minutes in the glass; we like our Brunellos with a little edge so we’ll be popping and pouring our next bottle

12/29/22, 9:34 AM - Too much for us for this wine. It seemed to fade quickly out of the bottle.

Red
2010 Château Gloria St. Julien Red Bordeaux Blend

Clear deep ruby/garnet; clean medium nose of cassis, balsamic, grilled meat and cigar box; dry; high acidity; medium plus tannins; medium plus alcohol; medium plus body; medium plus flavour intensity; palate is tarter; long finish; drink now with a decant or in 5 or 10 years; shy out of the bottle but opened up after about 45 minutes; lovely subtle wine - rich on the nose and silky on the palate

10/7/22, 5:12 AM - Thanks for the call out. Slider must have slid as I was saving the note - meant to score it 91.

Red
2005 Château Pontet-Canet Pauillac Red Bordeaux Blend

Clear deep ruby with a garnet watery rim; clean medium plus nose of cassis, cedar, raspberry jam, graphite and cracked fall leaves; dry; high acidity; medium plus tannins; medium alcohol; medium plus body; medium plus flavour intensity; palate is slightly tarter with addition of cocoa and ripe red cherries; long finish; drink now or in 10 years; just starting the shift to tertiary; started a little hot and then transformed into an elegant Bordeaux

10/27/20, 12:00 PM - We had a glass straight from the bottle and then let the rest decant for about 1.5 hours. I’ll try to decant for longer next time - but it will be a challenge :)

Red
2010 E. Guigal Châteauneuf-du-Pape Red Rhone Blend

Clear medium ruby/garnet; clean medium plus nose of dried red cherries, garrigue, soil, florality and barnyard; dry; high acidity; medium tannins; high alcohol; medium body; medium plus flavour intensity; pfn with addition of cocoa, coffee and slightly tarter fruit; long finish; drink now; this wine is close to its peak with a beautiful balance of tertiary notes and fruit

7/12/20, 2:56 PM - Thanks for the kind words! You’re absolutely correct - pfn = palate follows nose

White

Clear deep gold; clean medium nose of honey, ginger, mango, apricot and bruised apple; medium sweet; high acidity; medium plus alcohol; full body; medium plus flavour intensity; pfn; long finish; drink now; wonderfully balanced Pinot Gris - we’re never disappointed by Zind-Humbrecht

5/7/20, 3:16 AM - Hi Streethawk - sorry I get lazy and use pfn for “palate follows nose”

Red
1947 Moillard Vosne-Romanée Pinot Noir

Clean medium garnet; clean medium nose of barnyard, dry mushrooms and some acetone; dry; medium plus acidity; medium plus tannins; medium alcohol; medium body; medium plus flavour intensity; pfn with addition of earthy soil, mushroom and fennel; long finish; poured from bottle and drunk over about 20 minutes; started quite balanced and then acidity became more aggressive and tartness increased; beautiful experience; less interesting and complex than the 1934 Charmes-Chambertin (as expected)
  • Brent25 commented:

5/7/20, 3:14 AM - I can’t see it getting too much better. Seems like a wonderful way to enjoy the lockdown! :)

Red
2013 Tedeschi Amarone della Valpolicella Corvina Blend, Corvina
7/29/2017 - Brent25 Does not like this wine:
80 points
Ruby with ruby rim; wicked viscosity; nose of pepper, raisins, ripe cherry and alcohol; palate follows nose with sour notes and burn; medium, watery finish; burn takes it out balance; doesn't taste like its price point
  • Brent25 commented:

12/8/19, 7:25 PM - Its defects went beyond being a young wine. Hopefully a bad bottle - although I haven’t had much luck with this producer’s lower price point offerings.

Red
2016 Penfolds Shiraz St. Henri South Australia

Clear deep ruby; clean medium minus nose of cocoa, tar, cassis, blueberries, vanilla and toast; dry; medium plus acidity; medium plus tannins; high alcohol; medium plus body; pronounced flavour intensity; pfn with addition of black licorice; long finish; outstanding quality; incredible palate more than compensates for shy nose
  • Brent25 commented:

11/2/19, 6:49 AM - I use pfn as an abbreviation for “palate follows nose” and then add in anything additional that I’m tasting. Hope that helps.
