2019 Wendouree Malbec Clare Valley

This is a stunning wine, but it is so tight at the moment. Over a few hours with some serious glass swirling, some generosity can be coaxed out. But you know this isn't ready now. It's a 25 year+ wine that needs 10 initial years to even get started. I wish I could fast forward time here because this is a superb rendition of what is one of Australia's most unique wines. When on song, Wendouree Malbec is a standout and I have no doubt this vintage of it will be great in time. Willpower is needed here.

9/21/21, 4:27 PM - Thanks for the note Daniel. Sounds similar to the 2019 Cab/Malbec I tried recently - that needs some good cellar time too.

I have to say we were pretty disappointed in this wine. It’s all front palate and a bit sour without much else. I bought these after a mate introduced me to Marius wines and wowed me with a beautiful elegant but not overpowering wine. Sadly I cannot remember which bottle we shared but it certainly wasn’t this one. I have 5 more in the cellar and I won’t be rushing to open the next or sharing one with friends. Perhaps if we have a famous Roman general’s themed night it could be bang on.

Decanted for an hour before consumption. Very tightly wound initially, it slowly started to open up a bit more over the ensuing hours. Very youthful still, primary fruits on display; Cassis, tabacco leaf, with nice spice tones from the French oak. The tannins have softened since I last tried it, but still a bit firm on the finish. Still showing good acidity. A nice finish with a touch of menthol. Overall I feel it is a 'young' wine still, given good storage conditions and screw cap – I think its best years will be drinking from 15-20 years of age.

@bsmith457 - I am talking a drinking window from 2025-2026 so another ~5 years. Again for well stored bottles.

2017 Marius Wines Shiraz Symphony McLaren Vale

A nice wine, but very different to previous vintages of the Symphony. It's a lighter style, which is in line with this vintage in many parts of SA. Well made, very enjoyable to drink and should age well, but perhaps might be an earlier drinker than some of the more robust vintages.

2/1/20, 4:02 PM - Thanks - very good note. 2017 was a very wet vintage in SA, the wines are tending to be 'thinner' and lighter as you have noted. For a producer like Marius, I enjoy seeing the vintage variation year on year. I might crack one soon on the back of your note.

Clear bright, orange/light red. Intense spicy, floral red cherry nose. Dry fresh red cherry flavours and a very balanced dry finish.

So much fun to drink.

2012 St Hugo Cabernet Sauvignon Coonawarra
Regrettably this bottle was under cork which showed some signs of wine travel into two areas of the cork approx 1cm from the base. The wine had an overpowering bouquet of mould and the same on the palate rendering it undrinkable. Fortunately, when returned to the store of purchase, Dan Murphy's didn't hesitate to replace it with two bottles of the 2016 vintage under screw cap.

Subtle cedar, plums and toffee on the nose. Juicy plums, black cherries, liquorice, tobacco, vanilla bean, toffee and hints of raspberry. Impeccable balance; bright and lively with a superb acid spine that helps lift the flavours on the finish. Superfine sandy tannins. Medium bodied and very approachable now, but likely to age for many years. A superb wine and among the best Wendouree wines I’ve had.

Medium plus ruby. Medium plus aromas of perfumed oak and blackcurrant and dark chocolate. Hints of stewed rhubarb. On the palate the wine is medium acidity, medium plus alcohol, medium plus tannin, medium bodied, long length. Lashings of chocolate. This is a lovely wine - perhaps better than the straight Shiraz which is itself a wonderful wine. Years to go.
