Italian New Release Tasting at K&L

My favorite wine of the tasting. Floral and fruity nose. Smooth and rich on the palate, with notes of cherries, strawberries, plums, spice, licorice, and earth. The lush, gorgeous fruit is supported by supple acidity and velvety tannins. A little expensive, yet fairly priced at $50.

Pale yellow color. White flowers on the nose. The sharp palate features notes of lemon, apple, cream, and honey. Acidity is medium+, the alcohol is medium, and the finish is long. A lovely pecorino that is a perfect pairing for seafood and summertime get-togethers. Solid QPR at $20.

Pale ruby color. Dark cherry, tobacco, and forest floor on the nose. Wine is medium bodied and dry. Light spices, stewed plums, red berries, bruised dark cherries, and leather on the palate. Tannins are medium, alcohol is medium+, acidity is medium, finish is medium. An outstanding take on Pinot Noir from a region not normally noted for it. Recommend one hour decant.

$4 at Trader Joe's.

Pale salmon color. Red berries on the nose. The palate features notes of strawberries, raspberries, lemon, and minerals. The wine is dry, with medium alcohol and medium acidity. Finish is short. Kind of a porch-pounder, this is a perfectly cheap no-brainer rosé for a warm summer afternoon. Solid QPR.

Purchased from Last Bottle for $15. Medium ruby color. Wine is hazy. Red fruit on the nose. Sour cherries and plums, oak, vanilla, and light spices on the palate. Acid is medium, alcohol is medium and the tannins are low-medium. Finish is short. Feels like it's nearing the end of its life, if it's not there already. Another Last Bottle disappointment.

Pale purple color. Dry wine with notes of plums, blackberries, pepper, spice, vanilla, and oak. Simple stuff. Not complex at all. Alcohol and tannins are medium, acidity medium. Finish is short. Found for $2 in the Ralph's clearance rack. That price makes this a good deal.

Poured from 750ml via Last Bottle. Medium ruby color. Dark cherries and forest floor on the nose. Restrained fruit on the palate, with spice and earth notes taking the lead. Tannins are low, acid medium, alcohol medium. Definitely OR pinot, but somewhat lacking compared to others of the region.

On sale for only $5 at Trader Joe's, so I had to try it.

Medium salmon color with strawberries and pink flowers on the nose. The palate is medium bodied and dry, with notes of watermelon, strawberries, citrus, and raspberries. Alcohol is medium, acidity is medium.

Decent value here, but Trader Joe's is full of decent values in their rosé section. For the extra $1, I'll stick with the La Ferme Julien Rosé.

PnP. Alluring medium ruby color. Aromas of sour dark cherries, baking spices and potting soil. Light to medium bodied. Fruit forward and dry. Flavors include plum, tart cherry, and raspberry. No oak here. Tannins are medium, acid medium+, alcohol medium. Better with food. I can't believe Parker and Suckling gave this wine 90 points.

Wine is clear, pale straw color. Powerful aromas of grapefruit and grass on the nose. Lively minerals and more tropical notes on the palate, including pineapple, grapefruit, mango, passion fruit, and lime. Mouth watering acidity, and medium alcohol round out the profile. Easy drinking and a fantastic bargain at $6 from Trader Joe's.

Typical Tuscan blend of Sangiovese and Merlot. Dry and fruity, with plum, cherry, and blackberry flavors leading the way. A flabby, cheap, value-driven wine almost equal to half of its $10 price tag.

This gorgeous Napa Cab is drinking beautifully right now, but should improve over the next 2-4 years. Solid QPR in the $40-$50 range.

If you need a cute vase, buy this bottle....

Paid $5 at Trader Joe's. Pale copper color. Citrus, strawberry, and raspberry on the nose. The palate is extremely dry with notes of watermelon, more raspberry, and a hint of minerality. Alcohol is medium and the acidity is medium. Definitely needs food. Disappointing on its own. Just not much there. Will not buy again, not for $5...not for $1.

Pale ruby color. Flowers, funk, and dark cherry on the nose and palate with additional notes of currants, earth, licorice, spice, and oak. Perfectly balanced with medium alcohol, medium+ tannins, and medium acidity. Complex and alluring, with the structure to age for more than a decade. That said, this wine is very, very young at this stage, and I wouldn't even think of opening another bottle until at least 2030.

Still drinkable, but I expected better. If you have a bottle, drink it now because it's definitely fading.

Bought 4 bottles at the tasting room in Templeton. Opened the first tonight.

Medium purple color. Aromas of pepper, plum, and spice. The palate is forward with mixed berry flavors, cherry, licorice, and vanilla. The wine is dry with light tannins, medium acidity, and medium+ alcohol.

The future of the next three bottles is bright. Will open one per year to monitor its development. Already can't wait :)

Dark inky purple color. There has to be petit sirah in here. Probably healthy doses of zin, cab, and syrah too. Jammy fruit and spice aromas rise from the glass. The palate is full of juicy, extracted blackberry, dark cherry, blueberry, black plum, and boysenberry flavors. Non-fruit elements include coffee, tobacco, chocolate, and oak. Still, this wine is a major fruit bomb, full bodied and dry. Tannins are medium, acidity is medium, alcohol is high. The term 'Baby Camus" gets thrown around a lot, and although I do not think it fully applies to this wine, the Wagner style is definitely on display here. Paired with barbecue, this wine was more enjoyable than on its own.

White flowers and citrus on the nose. The wine features a rich, almost oily texture on the palate with notes of lemon, green apple, bright acidity, and medium alcohol. Delicious. Paired well with ahi tuna nachos and yellowtail tacos :)

YES, you read that right...this Sauvignon Blanc is over 10 years old, and is still drinking well. Absolutely astonishing.
