Spot prawn season! Wifey bought two pounds so a nice Checkmate seemed like a great match, and it was.
Queen Taken is one of my favorites, crisp and fresh, with lemon and grapefruit, pale yellow, medium body that doesn't overpower the sweet prawns.

I actually thought I opened a cab franc before realizing it was a malbec, rare in BC. I should have drank it a couple of weeks ago on World Malbec day.

Not much to report. It's been too long since I've had a good south american malbec so hard to compare. It was bitter and tannic on first taste but improved with time and spicy pizza. Not bad but not worth searching for or cellaring.

2019 Wine Align platinum award winner. Opened at the end of a boozy evening so recollection is hazy. Definitely needs more time, tannins are puckering. I have another one to sit a couple more years.

Inaugural pinot from Martin's Lane, one of three from 2014 and only one per customer of this particular one. Decanted for three hours along with a cab sauv and a bordeaux, and nearly as dark. Beautiful rich cherry plum and dark berries, full bodied bold and delicious, probably the best BC Pinot Noir I've tasted. Also the most expensive.

It's always a pleasant surprise when a relatively inexpensive wine that's been gathering dust in the cellar presents a very pleasant tasting experience. This wine was excellent and compares favorably with Napa cabs at twice the price. Delicious! And according to Cellar Tracker I have another bottle somewhere as well as a couple of 2018's.

You have to be patient with Nota Bene - at least five years storage after purchasing, and you will be rewarded with a consistently delicious Bordeaux blend. Too often I've ordered a bottle in a restaurant and been disappointed due to its young age and biting tannins. This vintage was excellent, but alas, I need to wait a couple more years for my others to age.

Cellar Tracker says this wine is good until 2022 so I guess it's at it's peak? Not sure about that, but I enjoyed it. A Syrah Cab Sauv blend that seems more Syrah forward, spicy and peppery. Went well with my spicy spaghetti. A pretty decent wine at a reasonable price.

This 2017 tastes much like the 2015 and 2016 - very pale, lemon and caramel on the nose, with grapefruit, lychee and a fair bit of tart acidity. Delicious with fresh crab. One of my favourite of the half dozen different Checkmate chards. Not cheap though!

I joined their wine club a couple of years ago and will have to be patient as my stock ages another year or two. Thought I'd crack this pinot and really liked it.
Unlike nearby Blue Mountain pinot noirs (also excellent), this pinot is really dark. It has lots of bold dark fruits and cacao with medium tannins and some alcohol evident, so not at peak yet but good now and better in a couple of years. A nice wine.

As a wine club member and having loved the 2014 Silent Bishop and Black Rook merlots, I was really looking forward to this wine. Unfortunately, my reaction was similar to Mr. Jones- meh. There was some decent fruit and pleasant flavours but also something I couldn't quite put my nose on. Cough syrup? I dunno. It improved with a nice ribeye but not enough to warrant a high rating, or the high cost of these wines.
This is the first vintage though and I'm hoping for better with my 2015's and later.

I'm a wine club member and familiar with this winery which has won many awards in Canada. Their QQ premium wines are very good and great value. Bought this cab sauv 3 years ago and it was perfect with spaghetti. Mild tannins, bold dark fruits, just a very pleasant glass or two.

Canadian winery of the year a few years ago, this Bordeaux blend won gold at 2017 Intervin awards.
Pretty close to prime now, a very nice wine and exceptional value. Full bodied with mild tannins and lots of fruit, delicious with spaghetti. Really enjoyed it.

This winery is part of Desert Hills in Oliver, BC. This wine won Platinum at the 2019 Wine Align awards.
An excellent Syrah, deep rich blood red colour, typical spiciness and pepper, licorice, prune, chocolate, medium tannins. Really good, and at under $30, a steal. One left to let sit a year or two to hit peak.

A Semillon and Sauvignon Blanc blend. The 2017 won awards but I found it too tart for my liking. This vintage, however, hit all the right notes. Maybe it was its youth, but I loved its crisp, clean fresh taste of mild lemon, grapefruit and strawberries and medium acid.
Just wish I had some vichyssoise to pair with it.

Moon Curser is a small winery that punches above its weight - 2019 Small winery of the year in Canada, with several wines winning gold or platinum at the 2019 Wine Align awards. Their Tempranillo won platinum, and this petit verdot won gold. And deservedly so. Not many wineries in BC do a petit verdot. Desert Hills is one I recall.
This wine is very good. Dark red colour, leggy, with dark fruit and red licorice on the nose. Alcohol and strong tannins show this wine has not peaked yet. Very good right out of the bottle and good on day two. Really enjoyed it and wish I had waited a year or two, or had more. If you're near Osoyoos this is a must visit winery.

Knowing very little about grenache and mourvedre, I wasn't sure what to expect from this french style blend. But I really enjoyed it. The syrah was mellowed out leaving smooth, earthy fruit, very mild tannins and a pleasing finish. Wish I had more.

Bought and cellared two years ago, my first full bottle of red from this winery although I've been enjoying their whites this hot summer.
This is an excellent cab that compares very favorably with Napa wines like Caymus. Rich dark chocolate, dark cherries, raspberries, medium acidity, very mild tannins. Perfect with dry aged bone in rib eye. Wish I had more! I might need to join this winery as I see all the 2017 premium cab sauvs are members only and sold out. And make sure to check out their beautiful new tasting room and restaurant.

After drinking and loving a 2010 after four years in the cellar I ran out and bought two 2014's. This was the first and well worth the wait.
Agreement with previous reviews, very dark, rich, chocolate and blackberry notes. Medium tannins, quite a lot of sediment. Near peak and will let 2nd bottle age another year or two while I go buy a couple of 2017's.

Medium to dark ruby colour, thick, plum and prune and spice on nose. Medium tannin. Bitter chocolate and dark fruit. Still a year or two away from prime but very drinkable now. Need to compare with platinum Pinot. Will buy more. Very nice.

Drank Christmas night 2020 with rib roast, quite delicious. Similar views to previous notes. The 2013 is Checkmate's inaugural vintage ( four different merlots) and while they are all good, Checkmate has improved. The 2014 Silent Bishop is outstanding and still available.

Just bought this in 2019, now sold out. This is a terrific wine, fabulous with sirloin. Plummy, burnt cherry, dark chocolate, full fruit, really tasty and in prime. Loved it.

Covid Halloween! Stay at home and crack a nice cab franc. Very aromatic, licorice, black fruits on nose. Medium tannins present, still puckery. Nearing prime but still has room to improve.

Little Engine has quietly been making some excellent BC wines, notably chardonnays and Pinot Noirs. Their platinum collection is for wine club members only. This was my first merlot tasted after a year in cellar and it was excellent. Very dark red, thick, nice aromas and full bodied tastes of black cherry, blackberries, chocolate, prune and licorice. Medium tannins and long finish this is already an excellent wine and should improve for years yet. Not cheap, but right up there with Checkmate merlots as the best in BC.

I like this wine too, but 2016 was better. Nkmip was Canadian winery of the year a couple of years ago and makes quality wine. The 2017 QQ chardonnay is excellent. Pale in colour, tart and crisp fruit, excellent value. One of the best BC chardonnays.

Much improved from a bottle tasted two years ago. Very pungent spice and clove on nose, settled down nicely. Close to peak, full bold fruit, long finish. One bottle left to enjoy soon.
