Spottswoode did not disappoint tonight. Still going strong with the black fruit you would hope and the mature notes as well. Still quite rich with a beautiful, velvety mouthfeel. Not trying to be Bordeaux but showing what a balanced Napa Cab can be at 25 years. Could probably go another 5+ but why wait?

Right in the sweet spot. This is why we age wines. A touch ungiving on the nose to begin but beautiful dark cherry and blackberry fruit hit the palate right away. Some vegetal notes and dried fruit rounded it out with a little earthiness. I will drink my last bottle within the year but I expect leaving this for another 3-5 years won't hurt.

This Merlot forward blend came out firing today. Beautiful velvety texture with dark cherry and blackberry fruit and a nice earthy edge as one would hope. In a really nice spot right now with a little forest floor and dried fruit just starting to emerge. Great pairing with a grilled ribeye.

My first shot at a left bank 2005 and it didn't disappoint. Quite full and powerful but the tannins were nicely integrated. Didn't have time for a longer decant but I think a 2 hour decant ahead of drinking would be best. Lovely dark fruit and beautiful Margaux perfume began to develop on the last few sips. Right at the beginning of the window but will go for another 20+.

This bottle was significantly better than the last one we drank 8 months ago. That beautiful Margaux perfume along with elegant, yet rich dark fruit and a long finish. This outshone a Rauzan-Segla 2006 drunk alongside but not by too much. Both were a very good spot.

This is in a very good drinking window right now. Not a showy vintage but it had lovely balance with dark fruit, vegetal notes, earthiness and velvety mouthfeel. Completely met expectations for an 06 St Julien.

The 2006 is coming into a very nice spot right now. Checking all the Pauillac
boxes with dark cherry, and a little bell pepper and lead pencil. Feels like it is in the beginning of a great window.

Three hour decant and the nose was promising: black currant, dark cherry, a hint of lead pencil and a little vegetal development. The wine wound up with almost no fruit. The mouthfeel was there but the flavour almost nonexistent. Same thing the next day after a double decant four hours ahead. Maybe in a late dumb phase in such a stellar vintage?

The '95 is in a nice drinking window right now. Comes across like a mature St Emilion without too much Syrah typicity. From a bit of a quality trough time for La Chapelle but still very much enjoyed.

Ripe and rich as expected. With a 3 hour decant it opened up beautifully with black cherry and plum and some lovely earthiness and even a little Pauillac lead pencil. Acidity was low but mouthfeel was velvety and sexy. Probably has another decade in it but no need to wait.

2 Hour decant. Nose opened up to reveal floral & dark fruit notes and a little licorice. Velvety mouthfeel with balanced blackberry notes and soft tannins. In a good window right now but not going to knock your socks off.

3 hour decant. This wine is hitting its stride now. Good spot in the drinking window with likely a decade to go. Quite full and ripe for a Brunello with a little earth and barnyard on the nose. Beautiful dark fruit with a velvety mouthfeel. Modern and hedonistic.

Only had time for a 2 hour decant on this one and it definitely would have benefited from another hour or three. Palmer always performs so well in 'average' vintages and the '04 is no exception. Lovely Margaux flowered perfume on the nose with dark fruit and a little vegetal evolution. The tannins never got in the way of this wine so it is in the drinking window. Ideally, I would give it another 3 - 5 years. The last sip was spectacular: quintessential left bank Bordeaux.

Saw the 2016 vintage priced at $1000 in Canada and thought I may as well pop a bottle that I paid about 1/7th of that for. It did not disappoint. Velvety mouthfeel and rich dark berry fruit with a little forest floor and tobacco on the edge. Will reward another 5 years plus but beautiful right now.

This wine really delivered what you would hope a 20+ year old Napa Cab would. Beautiful dark fruit, lovely mouth feel, nice complexity and a long finish. Still has good life ahead but perfect now. 1/2 hour decant.

Decanted 2 hours ahead and drunk over 30 mins. Palmer can drink like a first growth especially in challenging vintages but this wasn't quite there. Checked quite a few Margaux boxes; elegant and quite floral with some nice development. Just didn't have the extra gear and long finish I was hoping for.

This bottle showed almost perfectly at 20 years old. The balance of ripe and dried fruit with integrated tannins and balanced spice was very impressive. If this is what Beaucastel can do at two decades I am excited that I have a couple of cases of younger vintages in the cellar. This wine is still fresh and will likely continue to improve for years.
