Love, love this wine. Beautifully weighted and balanced, full of complexity and zest with lively acidity. A masterpiece in Chardonnay wine making. Can easily give any grand cru a good run for its money.

Colour is just beginning to change light yellow and the nose has notes of nectarines, red apple and some flintiness. Body was the talk of the town, with layers of complex flavour profiles. Lingering finish that will linger into the night.

Still very youthful and just entering its teenage years. Lovely, fresh, nicely balanced between texture and acidity. Nothing earth shattering in flavour profile, ticked all the right boxes of lime, citrus and certain floral notes. Lacked complexity at this stage but elegant and smooth.

Drink in 4+ years and skip this youthful but slightly dull phase.

Indulgence and elegance. This is just entering its rather long drinking window and has a good few decades ahead of it.

Full of stone fruit - nectarine and apricot with the emergence of some cumquat marmalade. Beautiful syrupy texture being graced by nice acidity.

Drink now to well, a very long time from now!

This has the potential to be a lovely wine and has a higher score than 91 but as is, it is way too fresh to be truly enjoyable.

As is, it is deep ruby red with bright fruits and very Grenache centric. Give it a few hours, the wine settles down revealing its true potential - spices, cherry, peppery notes. Medium to full bodied with explosions of flavours and firm tannins. Nice long finish with plenty of acid to ensure good ageing potential.

Drink in 4+ years but should really leave it alone for another decade before touching.

Still too young and going through a difficult growth phase. Leave it alone and it will be a wonderful drop in say 5 years. It is still a lovely now, well balanced and lovely structure. Linear and still high on acidity that is yet to be fully resolved.

Still youthful and has lost its puppy fat. Begin to trim down to be an athlete of some power but more suited to middle distance than a sprint.

Precise, direct communication and complex. The wine knows what it is and it will tell you everything you need to know. Delicious, thoughtful and reflective, all at the same time. Refer to other reviewers for tasting profile. Neal Martin’s note from Vinous sums the wine up very well. Need 3 hours decant at a minimum.

Drink now (kind of) to 2040+.

All the ageing potential predictors of this have been proven to wrong. Still fresh as a daisy, plenty of acid left to go for a fair bit longer yet.

Supple and delicate nose, hints of peach, apple and some floral note, the body was lively and positively racy. Finish was delicate that leaves you happy and yearning for more.

Impressive, very impressive - the only question is whether it will go the distance.

Only made during a good Cabernet year as it is a blend of Shiraz and Cabernet. Only the second time it has been made so somewhat lacking in having a real track record but……

Double decanted 3 hours before consumption, it was oak dominated on the nose but as the evening dark fruits, plums and cassis came out to say hello. Body was smooth as baby skin with soft and refined tannin. Ain’t so sure it has the acid to last the distance but I stand to be corrected.

Drink now to 8+ years.

Entering its awkward phase but this has excellent structure, shape and finesse to come out the other side beautifully, say in 5+ years from now. Could have done with a decant to blow away the slightly oxidative note.

Golden and a hint of orange in terms of colour, the foggy bouquet slowly revealed its mystery over a 2 hour period. Once there, there were notes of honey, nectarine, orange peel and some mandarin. Body was voluptuous, racy and lovely saline depth. Lovely silky finish that spoke to the soul.

A bit young but certainly drinkable now if you let it breathe.

Drink now to 2033+……

This wine needs a long decant right now, ideally 2 hours minimum for it to fully reveal itself but enjoying it evolving in the glass is not a bad way to go.

Explosion of dark fruits or plum and meaty at the same time, it had a most wonderful bouquet. Body was beautifully weighted and notes of cedar, charcuterie, concentrated dark fruits with a long finish. Acid and tannin were all in balanced and can go a fair bit further.

Drink now to 8+ years.

This bottle was under cork and not screw cap and thank goodness for that! Otherwise, we would have needed to wait for another 20 years!

Aged Australian semillon is simply a thing of marvel. Energy, freshness and eager to express itself, this bottle had all of this and more. Butter, toastiness, honey, lemon curd surfed on a great layer of freshness with a deep and long finish that will live in one’s memory for a long time. A brilliant wine.

This wine is now on its final home straight although it will be a long home run as there is plenty structure left. Need a 3 hour decant and just enjoy it over a 3 hour period.

Ruby red, it was very closed and chunky upon opening with minimal fruits. As the night progressed, it became much more integrated, developing elegance, depth and length. Certainly Merlot dominant in terms of profile but the cabernet franc did not play second fiddle. A worthy wine for those who enjoy aged Bordeaux.

Umm…. this bottle does not reflect the rave reviews by the critics….. Yes, it had apricots, white peach, flowers blah blah blah but the body lacked soul - limited depth, drive and no joy. Perhaps the bottle has gone to sleep and will only be awaken by Siegfried.

Leave it alone for a 3 years and have another crack.

Two years on since the last bottle - this now is beginning to reach its zenith and will now evolve into a very graceful wine for the next 10 years or more given the acid that is still left.

Poised, composed and confident, the 95 is beginning to be beguiling, mesmerising, mysterious and while it has closed its youthful chapter, a new one beckons. Dark, earthy and dark fruits, the youthfulness of brioche and toastiness have now disappeared giving way to new horizons - pinot like structure with orange peel, apricot notes, smokiness and a hazelnut accent. Fantastic yumminess factor.

Drink now but would be amazing to try in 10 years and with 2 bottles left, god willing, I will see it again then.

This bottle was so different to the last two that I will have to do a quick review. Perhaps the most Bordeaux blanc like bottle I have tried from Mount Mary - a SHL lite if you will but this should be taken as a compliment.

Zingy, punchy, racy and slight toasty, it is now entering into its drinking window. The semillon is now taking centre with the sauvignon blanc forming the brackdrop. Still plenty of zest with energy, this could still go for quite sometime yet. Velvety finish.

Drink now or to 2027+.

Love it when a wine has its own voice and this wine has it in spades. Made by John Duval, a well known Australian wine maker applying Australian techniques on the vines of Chile.

Ruby red - the nose evolved so much during the night so you get the works - dark palm, blackberry, cherry, violet and some smokiness / earthiness. Palate evolved from soft, to chunky then ultimately soft tannin that caressed the sensory buds with smokiness, dark fruits, cedar and a hint minerals. Long finish to round it off.

Drink now to 2029+. Need a good decant if consuming it now (2022).

This is quite an unusual pinot. For lovers of light, fruity pinots, please do not apply. For something different, this is quite an interesting wine. The fruits and delicacy did come out after 3.5 hours of decanting but before this, it was dry, earthy, dusty and forceful.

This bottle was much better than the one I had a few months ago so a re-evaluation. It had life, definition, power and much more drinkable. Who said there is no bottle variation with screw cap.

Bright ruby. Complex bouquet that is dominated by floral notes, spice / white pepper, cherry and a hint of rose petal. Palate was humming with freshness accompanied by dark plums or berries, peppery and with a sweetness undertone. Tannin was present with vanilla oak quite present. The finish was long although not satisfying. The wine had power but missing the grace on the finish which let it down.

A shiraz / viogner blend and it is an elegant and seamless wine. A wink to Northern Rhone and a nod to cool climate shiraz.

A spice, slightly peppery and performed nose, laced with hints of berries, plums and fine oak. Body was silky thanks to the viogner but grew bigger as the Shiraz comes out to play. Freshness from the shiraz that held the wine together. Fine tannin and lovely smooth finish that lingers longer than an unwanted relative.

Reflective of a difficult vintage, it does not have to power and drive of the better vintages but it makes up for elegance and freshness.

A terrific value wine which punched way above its weight. Great shame that Hunter Valley Semillon does not get the recognition that it deserves. Its time will come.

Vivid green hue, it is graceful and very light on its feet. It has quite a zesty citrus nose with hints of lemongrass and toastiness. Very lively body with a soft mouthfeel but developing a nice complexity of honey, nuttiness and orange peel. Beautiful long finish.

Decanting this wine is not going to work. Enjoy immediately otherwise the green and stems will strangle the wine.

Needed time to get going so decanting is order of the day if one wants to enjoy this wine. A well rounded Coonawarra structure and a fine finish.

Blackcurrant, spice and oak influenced bouquet. Reasonably fine tannin with lovely freshness and earthy body. Not too complex and had enough depth to make it interesting. A long finish that notes of minerals and herbs.

Certainly pleasant enough and has sufficient interesting factors to hold one's interest. It is not a wine of depth and grandeur of a Hermitage or Northern Rhone but at its price point, one should not expect it.

Still green, the nose is a lovely blend of lemon, nectar and orange peel. Body follows the same path but has some Viognier characteristics showing butter and touch of creaminess. Finish is broad and showing some honey and floral notes.

Cool, funky, trendy and look, no fruits - lean and mean but is it any good? The answer is no!

Chardonnay needs fruits, balance, grace and power. This is all about acid and well if that rocks your world, enjoy. If not, avoid.

Drink now or well, into infinity, isn’t that what acid is all about?

I have not drunk many assyrtiko bottles so cannot say much other than I thoroughly enjoyed this bottle.

This is not an oaked wine and yet it has the creaminess texture and shape that would fool you into thinking that it was barrel aged. The nose was not that expressive other than beeswax and perhaps some passionfruit. The body was where it shined. Thrilling waves of lemon / lime, apple and stonefruit all wrapped by a beautiful freshness and power. Finish had a bit of honey and flint.

This borders on the "as good as it gets" for chardonnay. A stunning wine that consumed perhaps 3 years too early. But as I only had one bottle, it was good to try it young. Only 639 bottles were made.

Voluptuous, elegance, balanced and tension - these are some of the descriptors that I would use to describe this wine. How a chardonnay can achieve this level of sophistication is beyond me. It makes Leflaive looks very pedestrian - decidedly.

A flinty, mineral nose with layers of fruits - citrus, peach and nectarine. The body was tactile, racy and grippy at the same time. Notes of citrus fruits, green apple and wet slates were very evident. Finish was just wonderful - it had drive with subtleness at the same time - white flowers and racy freshness.

This is the highest score I have ever given to a chardonnay and I have been lucky enough to try some of the best. Can't wait for the next release.

Drink in 3+ years but if open now, decant it for an hour and drink at almost room temparature.

I have always argued that chardonnay needs fruits. Without fruits, it is a rather boring experience as there is only so much one can get excited by the acidity and heaven forbids, salinity!

Well, this wine was made in those fad years and steely it is. Rod straight, arrow like focused which is great but there is no yumminess factor. What is the point?

This wine was saved by the Vietnamese food and with the right food, the acidity changed from a liability to being a friend.

This is a wonderful sparkling and while it is not a Salon, it does not pretend to be but it is top notch.

Had it with crayfish omelette and lobster with noodles in ginger sauce, it was a great food wine. Fine beads, the nose was full of chardonnay notes - pineapple, green apple, floral notes and some citrus. Body was beautifully creamy with brioche emerging, well weighted, balanced and structured. Finish was harmony personified and long.

Here is a tip - drink this and forget Ruinart blanc de blanc - for 1/3 of the price you cannot beat it.

It is a yummy and robust wine but does not have the complexity to be in the top league. It is a good Tuesday night wine when one does not want to think.

This was a lovely and savoury wine, with some depth and complexity. Certainly, one of the top Australian Cabernet Sauvignons.

Been aged perfectly from day one, the first thing to note is it needs a lot of time to open up so a 2+ hours decant is essential for this wine.

Very oak dominant upon opening, coconut and creaminess revealing a heavy finger print of American oak or heavily smoked French oak. Good news was this disappeared after an hour so one can actually experience the wine. Still dark red, the nose had a blend of cassis, earthy and savoury notes, dark plum and graphite. There is lovely and clean fruits on the body with nicely weighted structure. Tannin was well integrated and certainly, it is very fine right now. Finish was lingering long with a touch of violet.

Drink now or 10+ years. To some degree, it is still on the young side.

It was a privilege to drink this wine.

Heading more towards St Julien rather than a pure Pauillac, this wine was elegant, subtle and quite racy for a wine that is approaching its 29th birthday. Medium body, the colour does not reveal its age as it is bright ruby. The bouquet was what you would expect, but there was a softness that embraced the body. Blackberry, cassis, graphite and a hint of violet spoke quite clearly but softly.

Body was beautifully structured, very fine tannin and followed the path as the bouquet. Finish had notes mazapan and quite minerally.

Drink now and can keep for another 15+ years, it won’t get better, it will just be different if you decide to keep it. At the moment, it needs a 2 hour decant.

I have rated this wine on value for money as well as the experience. For 1/3 price of SHL and other Bordeaux blanc, it is a bit of bargain.

Very sauvignon blanc centric, the nose was pure passion fruit, lime and pineapple. The body follows the same path but with citrus and orange thrown in free of charge. All wrapped by a beautiful freshness and very well proportioned. A touch a salinity, honeysuckle at the finish and with some mineral as well.

And nope, there was no “pipi de chat” detected tonight.

An outstanding value for money wine, given the current silly pricing! For $AUD35, this had an enjoyment factor as good as any premier cru Burgundy. But I digressed.

Possibly one of the most German like riesling that I have tasted in a long time. With the passage of time, it has developed lovely notes of honey, orange / citrus, ginger and grapefruit. Still plenty of acidity left and very mouth filling, not linear like some other Australian rieslings. A lovely finish with intensity and depth a hint of smokiness. Only thing that was missing was the depth of complexity that tended to fade before you can catch it.

Had it with Chinese roast pork and deep fried calamari - not the best match! Needed a steak but such is life.

Essentially a cabernet shiraz blend with a bit of other Bordeaux varietals thrown in. Deep red and showing little sign of age colour wise, the quality of the fruits was no doubt top class. Purity, expression of the varietals and depth were all there. Certainly the nose was dominated by cabernet franc & cabernet sauvignon - cassis, dark fruits such blackberry and some spice or floral note. Body was well balanced and had notes of leather, tobacco, cherry with still medium tannin. Quite a bitter finish which ruined the show a bit. While this was a well made wine, I don’t think the blending was particular thoughtful. Flavours did not quite gel and made the wine quite disjointed. Technically excellent but lacked the yummy factor.

About to enter its prime, it is purple hue tending to red. On the nose, it is a mix of ripe fruits (blueberries, plums and cherries) with earthy notes and some herbs thrown in. Body was quite savoury, lovely shape and very well defined and tight flavours. Lovely finish with fine tannin.

A fantastic wine that needs time to reveal itself but what a grunter of a wine.

Upon opening, it was obvious that it was a McLaren Vale shiraz, no thinking required. But give it time, its mysteries and soul reveal themselves and a what complex soul it has. Plum, licorice, prune (but never raisins), fine tannin and layers of complexity (coffee, mocha, herbs) opened themselves to be explored. Certainly it now has leathery characteristics and cedar notes are beginning to emerge. But all of this was wrapped in Egyptian cotton wool acid making it so sensual and desirable!

Who says one cannot have bottle variation with screw cap closure! This bottle was a vast improvement from the last one.

Colour is youthful and is not showing any evidence of ageing. The nose, however, indicates otherwise with hints of honey and kerosene (or custard) beginning to emerge although it is still very lime / lemon dominant.

The palette is racy with plenty of freshness, some salinity and mineral with tropical fruits. A decent finish and overall, a bit of a straitjacket. Very pleasant but needs food to shine.

It is not easy to make a pure grenache without turning it into a fruit bomb or an alcohol factory and John Duval has created a wonderfully sensuous wine with subtlety and depth, an outstanding achievement.

Lovely clean fruits, one gets the usual grenache flavour profiles including the spice but for a hot region, this wine was soft and elegant with such freshness that simply leaves you wanting for more. The tannin was fine and soft, and the oak never appeared. What was a standout was simply the depth of flavours and the structure supporting the wine. A medium body wine so match your food carefully.
