Dinner at Sun Wah (Chicago, IL): Pretty good for sauvignon blanc -- this has a pretty nice, rich texture, with some of the attendant flavours: gooseberry, kiwi, that kind of thing. The palate seems to get a bit of bulkiness from the riper area and maybe a generous bit of oak. Pleasant subtle floral/honey tones as well. A good example overall, but I actually don't know any producer that really makes great wine from the grape, except Vatan (and Didier Dagueneau).

2020 Ataraxia Chardonnay Upper Hemel-en-Aarde Valley
Very typical new world chardonnay, but on the elegant side of the spectrum. Butter, lemon, vanilla, oak, medium acidity and finish. A bit out of balance towards the oak/vanilla currently, but this may improve.

1/24/24, 8:24 PM - Not sure how South Africa gets counted as "new world"(viticulture going back centuries). Maybe that means 'newly discovered ?

Continues to improve!
This seems to be a little richer / oakier than other RM vintages - which I like.
Hit the spot tonight - Derby wine!

1/11/24, 6:42 PM - many posters here would consider a 71 pt wine undrinkable. Was this a typo, 91?

2019 Flowers Chardonnay Sonoma Coast
Assertive vanilla honey aroma. Soft buttery honey vanilla across the palate. To my taste a semisweet dessert wine, cloying and boring.
Ordered by my dinner companion who gulped glass after glass with pleasure.

5/2/22, 6:41 PM - perhaps the mention of a wine in this category you find worthy would help put your boredom in perspective for the rest of us not familiar with your preferences

2019 McManis Family Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Lodi
So jammie, would only pair with reeses peanut butter cups..A single note wine.Billy Ray Cyrus sang 2 notes in achy breaky heart. Would not use it for cooking. If the alcohol content wasn't so high, I would freeze it for popsicles.

3/23/21, 7:55 PM - Label says alc 13.5% which is LOW these days.

Probably not the best vintage of this wine
However
Super delicious delicate flavors that are trademarks of this producer?
I can’t afford the conterno Barolo
Every time I taste this wine which I think is from 3 vineyards
It has delicious delicate dtrawberry with a touch of kushberry
  • vinojones commented:

1/15/21, 6:30 PM - This is a baby wine, why/how would you decide it is not a "best" vintage for it already? Not talking about the entire region on vintage charts, but for this specific wine?

" In 2017, Roberto Conterno did not bottle his vineyard-designates. Instead, all the best lots went into the straight Gattinara, an overachieving wine that delivers the goods. "

Drinkable. Certainly not worth the $42. As opposed to so many of my aged Italians, at least this had some fruit left in it and did not just consist of a finish of tannins.
  • vinojones commented:

7/17/20, 6:52 PM - Hi, don't understand your scores just a few days apart without mentioning bottle variation. Also, these days a 9 y/o wine not oth is not a QPR for 42$ ?

  • vinojones commented:

7/18/20, 7:21 PM - I just found your score/conclusion puzzling given your own apparently frequent disappointment with aged Sangiovese. "As opposed to so many of my aged Italians, at least this had some fruit left".....

The bottle I had a few nights ago was very enjoyable, of course, to each his own. For context, I begin to drink Tuscan's at 8-12 yrs of age for enjoyment, of course sampling along the way to evaluate maturation.

Bottle flawed - not drinkable.
Lots of sediment; cloudy.
  • vinojones commented:

11/30/16, 8:16 PM - Why was it cloudy? That alone suggest less than ideal care for the wine before tasting. More info about the care of the wine would be helpful.

Opened decanted 45 min before drinking
Dark red ruby red to the edges; mild nose of tobacco, cacao(
bitter chocolate); flavors of brambles/berries, tart cherries; tight red berry flavors, cranberry, assertive acidity, over 90 min acidity became more noticeable, fruit more tart; held up very well on the end with crisp palate cleansing fresh berry flavors; med long finish.
  • vinojones commented:

9/27/13, 9:36 AM - Stefan- yes perhaps it was just a bottle variation. I didn't think it a disappointing wine, just lacking bouquet ( the 82 Jumelles tasted at the same time was much better in that regard). To give it a 90+ score I would look for more concentration too. Hope you enjoy your bottle!

Nose - tannin, meat, not alot of fruit. Palette - prunes, meat, some tannin, some fruit. Not my style.
  • vinojones commented:

2/22/13, 5:50 PM - "not my style" but still 90 pts??

  • vinojones commented:

2/23/13, 11:24 AM - JHC- my comment was not about Dunn but rather the disconnect between a score of 90 which is generally considered to be a very desirable wine and your "does not like" . I have nothing against you not liking that bottle, or any wine, but I think the score should more closely match the description-- how about an 82 or 75 score? John Gilman, a professional wine critic as example often scores wine he is critical of, or not his style, in the 70's.
