An absolute beauty from Russell Bevan that won out at another fantastic wine dinner with the FM group.
Decanted for 3 hours. Opens up big and complex, with a nose of dark fruit, spice, and pencil lead. Still dark and brooding, it is an incredible mouthful of blackberry, dark current, cassis, espresso and black licorice. Stays complex yet voluptuous. Tannins were perfect.
It won handily in a blind tasting over a 2006 San Leonardo, 2008 Beau Vigne reserve, 2005 Continuum, and a 2010 Lokoya Howell Mountain.

Not a surprise that this effort from Joe Wagner is similar in style to his original Meiomi and Belle Glos offerings.
It pours very dark with little translucency to the wine indicating the style. It has quite a nose of fruit and a rich and extracted mouthful of black cherry, raspberry, tea and spice.
If you like this style you will find this to be a bit better than Meiomi and somewhere closer to the Belle Glos wines.
If you prefer a more traditional style that is more refined and lighter on it's feet then stay away.

I enjoyed this wine very much. As expected the residue on the cork was black.
There was a touch of bottle stink immediately after opening but it blew off quickly.
It shows the pedigree of the 2004 vintage. Lots of blackberry, dark fruit and pepper is still playing out and the tannins are fully evolved. There is a touch of sweetness to the fruit that is indicative of 15 years in the bottle. Some subtle spice plays out with the richness of the fruit.
I suggest it is time to drink this vintage of the Dead Arm should you have any stored away.

I was surprised to find this LM syrah in such fine form. Lots of blackberry dominated dark fruit, pepper, clove, and touch of cigar box. The tannins are there keeping it all in check. Still has a few years to go if you have any in the cellar.
Paired very well with a peppercorn rib eye.

Still a hedonistic bomb with new world style Syrah that is black raspberry, chocolate, bacon, and smoke. Decanted for 2 hours and over a 3 hour dinner it remained opulent and powerful. Layered, rich, and almost dessert like but it was out of place against a 2005 Bevan Showket.
Another great wine night with the FM crowd.

I was somewhat surprised by this 2001. I thought most of the fruit would be gone but it is still holding up with an elegant black currant, dust, and plum mouthful. While I would not wait much longer if you have some in your cellar it is still showing signs of classic Rutherford personality.

If you like a true expression of CDP Grenache you should love this wine. While somewhat light in color, it is medium bodied, silky smooth with crushed raspberry, red fruit, subtle pepper and a hint of cedar. The high alcohol volume is well hidden in the fruit. Well worth a try.

2 hours of decanting was not nearly enough time to allow this wine to express itself. The initial nose and mouthful exposed the large percentage of cab franc in the wine. It is all red fruit, red licorice, tobacco, pencil lead, with a tart somewhat herbaceous edge.
Tried again 12 hours later and the green edge was gone, leaving a beautiful expression of what a cab sauv and cab franc blend can do together. Almost like biting into a perfect strawberry covered with dark chocolate. Long, savory aftertaste.

Another wonderful expression of RRV fruit by this up and coming producer.
Very tight after opening with a muted nose of dark fruit, tea, and rose petal.
After 2 hours of decanting the wine opens up to a beautiful mouthful of dark cherry, raspberry and a hint of cranberry. There are subtleties of spice, licorice and a obvious pepper. It is fruit driven and not shy!
Although quite tannic for a PN, once is melts away the wine has wonderful balance. Do yourself a favor and let it breathe!
If you can cellar it, 2021 will be optimal.

An outstanding, full throttle shiraz that warrants all the accolades it gets....as long as you like a hedonistic style.
A nose of blue and black fruit, violets, white pepper and mild vanilla, but mostly rich fruit that is followed by a big mouthful of intense blackberry, chocolate and vanilla. The wine is in a great place but may still have another 5 years. Opulent!
Beat out a 2006 Paul Hobbs Kick Ranch syrah, a 2009 Cayuse Cailloux and a 2013 K Cattle King syrah in another wonderful FM wine dinner and blind tasting.

I love this PN from WH. After just a slight whiff of bottle stink that blew off this North Slope Vineyard opened up to an intense nose of dark fruit and spice. The mouthful is a laser beam of black cherry, rhubarb, cola, and licorice that stayed strong even 4-5 hours after the first sips.
Well worth the price point if you like a full throttle style of PN.

A fruit forward, new world style! Luscious and rich with sweet orange, marmalade and honey. Although close to the edge it is not over the top.
Paired fantastically with Crispy Orange chicken from Hunan!

This is my style of pinot noir. Although not overly dark in color the WH Estate Vineyards wine has a pungent nose of red fruit, tea, and spice. The mouthful is a laser beam of mandarin orange, cherry cola, tea and rhubarb. It has a slight tart edge at the end that accompanies a long aftertaste.
A great value from a consistent PN producer.

While I liked this wine very much, I found it a bit one dimensional and simple. Don't get me wrong, it's a solid effort with plenty of fruit, but just a tad shy of the big boys (still a good value at $40).
Dark fruit, espresso, and vanilla on the nose. Tight. Opens up nicely over a few hours. Continues with that theme on the palette with blackberry, black current and a hint of smoke and spice. Has the stuffing just not the complexity for me.

An orange peel and chocolate nose followed by a somewhat intense dark cherry, burnt orange, and peppery mouthful. It's a style that I like as it has some stuffing but not as overly fleshy as, say, a Meiomi.
Received as a gift so I can't comment on the value but I would buy it again in the $25 range.

Another great value chardonnay from SRH. Slightly different than the Wrath I reviewed earlier in that the Brewer Clifton is more toward the citrus side of the grape with single dimension fruit and a bit more acidity. Lemon zest dominates but not in an overpowering way with subtle notes honey, orange, and apricot. A solid value.

Delicious chardonnay dominated by apple and pear, flinty tones, caramel and butter. Opulent, open textured and creamy.
Rich and luscious.

Light in color with a subtle nose of honeysuckle. A zinger of lemon hits the palette with a healthy dose of minerality. Settled down a bit over a few hours but definitely on the citrus side with good acidity. Well matched with spicy Asian food.

An outstanding Sonoma chardonnay that offers layers of complex tropical fruit, orange, pineapple, a touch of soft lemon, and butter, butter, butter! Rest assured there is enough of a backbone of acidity to hold all the fruit in check.
Over a few hours it remained consistent and extremely satisfying. High priced, high quality chardonnay that will hold its own against anything from Sonoma and most top tier NV chard's.

Opened up to a wall of tannins and cigar box. Decanted for 2 hours but it did not fully open for about 5 hours. Trust me when I tell you it needs a lot of time to open up.
Dark fruit, almost a blackberry and black cherry quality, with dark chocolate and plenty of oak.
A bit pricey but it has lots of stuffing!

A good value chard that shows the typical fruit from SRH. Tropical fruit notes, gala apple, pear, butterscotch, and almonds. Just enough acidity to balance against the buttery fruit.

A solid effort from S.R. that falls just slightly short of many high end NV cabs. 2 hour decant. Loads of black current and dark cherry fruit with nuances of white chocolate, mocha, and vanilla. A bit one dimensional and not as complex as I would have thought (perhaps indicative of the 2012 vintage?). Well integrated now and probably in it's prime.

A bit of a revelation for me as this is a significant step up from the regular Grand Reserve. Lots of tropical influence with a core of pineapple, candied orange and papaya fruit woven together with some nutmeg, spice and caramel apple. It is not over the top and it pairs very well with mango, papaya chicken.
Well done!

A wonderful zinfandel from an up and coming producer.
Spicy, full bodied, red that has nuances of black licorice, tar and smoke. Blackberry and dark raspberry fruit dominates.
A big boy that has enough balance to sip and enjoy on it's own.
Well worth seeking out if you can find it.

An utterly beautiful wine that, so far, is the best of my verticals of QC (2005-2012)
Incredible black and blue fruit that is fully evolved after 12 years in the bottle. Powerful but not tannic; a dramatic mouthful of dark fruit that that still has great balance. Notes of subtle espresso, white chocolate and mocha.
Has it all going on right now.
Enjoy!

I haven't had any Hess for many years so I thought I would try it anew....and I am glad I did. A shout out to FM and KR.
A nose of dark fruit, cigar box, and cedar followed by a big mouthful of blackberry, dark plum, and black licorice. Although tannins are present it is very accessible today and an easy drink. Luscious and rich tasting and a very good value considering the high price of today's NV cabs.

Lots to like about this well balanced, aromatic Chave. Beautiful nectarine, peach, caramel, and slightly buttery notes that are in perfect harmony with minerality and acidity. Has lots of yummy fruit that is well controlled by the grip of the wine.
Very food friendly.

A potent nose of raspberry and black tea. Tight. Initial mouthful of intense blackberry and raspberry fruit, licorice, and espresso. After 3 hours it had settled down a bit and was all sweet, spicy fruit.
If you like Grenache it will probably be right down your alley. I think a good wine for the price.

A very unique style of Syrah that perhaps reveals the terroir of the growing region?
Red fruit and a bit of sage on the nose. A mouthful of cherry and slightly unripe strawberry, spice, pepper with a bacony tinge. Medium bodied with fine tannins and some backbone. Dare I say a maritime sea salt somewhere in there?
A good contrast to the high octane, black fruit syrahs coming out of California and Washington.

Loads of blackberry fruit in a opulent, forward style. Some pepper and black cherry subtlety in a soft, easy drinking wine. Not much structure and not for those who seek a balance of acidity. Still, a decent value for the price point.

Very light straw color followed by fragrant notes of almonds and citrus. The mouthful is a razor sharp core of lemon zest with a nuance of key lime pie. Good minerality that keeps the wine crisp and tight. Would pair very well with Asian food.
Not quite sure about the 94 from WS but an excellent example of this type of wine.

Initially this wine comes across as a bit tart with a smoky, cedar, edge around some dark fruit and stout tannins. It opens up in a few hours to reveal more black fruit and a pleasant espresso touch. Medium bodied.
Would pair well with something blackened but not my cup of coffee, no pun intended, for sipping without food.

A wonderful Vouvray that combines lots of luscious fruit that is kept in balance with well matched acidity. Pear, melon and some citrus notes well in tune with honey and almonds. Opulent yet not over the top.

On the nose and palette, black raspberry, blackberry, licorice and pepper. Full throttle and intense; not for those seeking elegance and balance.
