1999 Chateau Musar Bekaa Valley Red Blend (view label images)
Amazingly unseeped (or whatever the word is) cork. Double decanted then left open for 10 hours before pouring. Still plenty of life in this bottle, smells and tastes of plum, pepper, and other spices (maybe clove). A bit of barnyard but not as much as I was expecting, actually pretty clean. Fresh acidity and smooth tannins, worked well with the food (mushroom, spinach, chestnut, pine nut and Stilton wellington). At the risk of talking nonsense, I’d describe it as elegant.

Nose: coconut and vanilla initially, strawberry and cherry fruit lurking.
Palate: Flippin heck that packs a juicy punch! Sour cherries, sweet strawberries (like those strawbs I think they’re called) then a smoothness, then finishes with big fine tannins and freshness. That is delicious, but still very young I think. Lovely now but massive structure for the future.

In a word: intense. Even with a bit of a cold, this was delicious. Grapefruit and lime on the nose, same on the palate but more (what I think of as) mineral/flinty character as well. Rich mouthfeel but with tingling acidity, and a little spice. Very long finish. Quite a mouthful! Well balanced and great now, but look forward to drinking the rest over the next few years to see how it changes.

2010 Château Puygueraud Francs Côtes de Bordeaux Red Bordeaux Blend (view label images)
Day 1, even after a long decant this was harsh, acidic, hot, some leather and spice but little fruit. Ok with food but hard to love.

Day 2 things were much improved: smoother, more dark fruit to go with the leather and spice, better balance, felt like a lot of wine for the money.

It’s a big, ripe wine and I’m not sure the alcohol will ever fully integrate with the other elements, but I am confident this wine will improve and become more harmonious over the next few years.

2009 Château Moulin Riche St. Julien Red Bordeaux Blend (view label images)
Juicy blackcurrant fruit, well balanced with cedary notes, tannin and acid. Smooth mouthfeel after a good decant, but a shorter finish than I was expecting. Agree with other reviewers, enjoyable but a bit simple.
Red
Sweetly fruited but with more interesting cedar/spicy notes than its £8.50 price would suggest. Excellent midweek wine, food friendly.
Red
Initial nose suggested used nappy (/diaper), frankly unpleasant. That passed and after a good airing opened up to pure black fruits on nose and palate, lovely fresh wine with a lightness that belies its 14.5%. Advice to drink cellar cool is right.
White
Delicious. Honey initially, then mineral, finishing fresh and ready to go back for more. Quite long. Much more interesting than one has any right to expect at this price. Wonderful stuff.

White - Fortified
Delicious, refreshing, balanced, some nutty complexity and decent length. Looking forward to drinking the dos and tres palmas.
Red
Lovely, dark fruit on nose and palate, bit of acidity and still some tannic structure, very enjoyable to drink. Still plenty there to age for a bit longer.
White
Bright, not too aromatic on the nose, with attractive citrus and pear fruit on the palate. Some complexity. Lovely freshness, longer finish than expected. Very easy to drink alone but could also cut through alpine food. A joy.

Delicious! Nose-filling aromas of fruits and spice, powerful palate of dark fruits, hint of meat, good grip and nicely balanced. No rush to drink imho, but to my taste showing its best now. Went perfectly with venison stew.
White
Muted nose, some apple fruit and interest from stony notes on the palate, retaining some acidity and freshness, but definitely needs drinking. Probably slightly over the hill at this point to be honest.

Addendum 07 Jan 18- second half of the bottle drunk a day and a half later: More open, more apple and citrus fruit apparent on the palate, better balance and generally much more enjoyable drinking. First time aerated only in slightly larger glasses and given some time (label recommends decanting), but would follow the advice and decant to open it up quicker. There’s life in the old dog yet! Still recommend drinking soon.
