Method: pop and pour (Coravin); 60ish degrees; Cab glass

Look: deep ruby

Nose: raspberry, bramble, faint violet, faint black pepper

Palate: raspberry, boysenberry, unripe blue berry, orange; long- significantly bitter (raw cocoa? bitter herbs?), tar, dry leather; dry; medium+ body; medium+ tannins; med+ to high- citrus-like acidity

Overall: Hopefully it improves with air, but what a mess right out of the bottle. The finish is pretty long, but unfortunately, I find it quite off-putting as it's significantly bitter. Other than the bitter finish, the wine is simple, though I get a surprising orange/citrus juice element. While every element of this wine isn't horrible, I'm not sure I find any redeeming qualities. Maybe it's in muted phase, maybe it needs more air, but as I drink it right now, this is a pretty bad wine.

3/18/23, 12:02 AM - This producer is an insider’s favourite but, to be the odd man out here, the wines are rubbish. Massive VA and bacterial spoilage, dissolved gas on opening, sweet and bitter at the same time, vegetative in a negative way….WTF are people talking about when they rave. I’ve tried and tried again. They’re rubbish. Basic winemaking faults through the range. And I’m generally tolerant of this eg I love old whites.

An incredible experience with one of the most brilliant, engaging, compelling and possibly ‘interesting man in the world’ - Neil deGrasse Tyson’. Could not recommend attending engaging enough.

Started off the evening at my favorite restaurant with a 2007 Cristal, 2017 Meursault, 2016 Oddero Barolo and this insanely compelling Forey Morey-Saint-Denis (might be a new favorite- I need to dive deep into this producer)

My new favorite village wine- can’t imagine what the 1er and Grand Crus are like. This displays layered aromas and flavors of red and black raspberries, blueberries, slight meaty, mineral undertones and wonderful mouthfeel with a beautiful finish. Round and balanced, While incredibly deep, complex and approachable now, there is only the additive benefit of near to mid term cellaring (medium acidity) to this beautiful unique expression.

Forey’s Morey-Saint-Denis consists of two tiny holdings of vines between 30 and 50 years of age (one in Clos Solon and one in Les Crais.). The wine is fermented with 50% whole clusters and aged in (20%) 500-liter barrels. Practicing organic farming. No added SO2.

This small but outstanding domaine was created in 1840 by the great-grandfather of Régis Forey, the current proprietaire. Régis became fully responsible for all aspects of production and winemaking with the 1989 vintage. In contrast to the wines of his father, who produced seductive wines of finesse and delicacy, Régis expresses a more masculine personality as his wines show exceptional concentration and depth. The primary family holdings are in Nuits Saint Georges, Vosne-Romanée and Flagey-Echezeaux. With the recent additions, the domaine extends its reach into the villages of Vougeot and Morey Saint Denis.

Regis Forey makes a range of traditional, old school Pinot Noir in the heart of Vosne-Romanée. His domaine is 10 hectares and includes holdings from Nuits-St-Georges to Morey-St-Denis, and include some top 1er crus in Vosne.

Corn/wheat flour tones to the bouquet. A richer, fuller and more classic Mouchère palate with a very faint botrytis influence. A Puligny Grand Cru equivalent on this showing. A great wine 19.5

I’ve had 4 bottles from this vintage and am not sure how to rate. Absolutely delicious on day 1 — brooding but not heavy; intense; energetic. However all 4 bottles were unbearably mousy on day 2 and needed to be dumped.

This is the only Souhaut wine I’ve experienced mousiness — the Souteronne, Cessieux and Ste Epine are all sound, delicious, sturdy wines.

1/13/21, 1:30 AM - I have opened three of a six pack. All have had slight gas, volatility and I suspect suffer from bacterial spoilage. If so, it’s unforgivable from a winemaker of this quality in the 21st century. If not, buggered if I know what’s going on?

I broke my promise and opened up another bottle of this out of curiosity to see if my last bottle was off. This time, I gave it a full 3 hours in the decanter before pouring my first glass; this is still very much as I remembered it. Masculine structure, dark fruits only with a savory backbone, this smelled and tasted nice, but the refined balance is clearly still missing here.

11/20/20, 4:19 AM - I’ve had this several times over the past five years and it is best after a 24 hour decant. Try it.

This remarkable wine has certainly turned the corner beginning to revealing its spectrum of classic Hunter Valley Semillon. Lanolin, straw and hints of honey come to the fore as the wine displays its awesome purity of line and length. Previous bottles had not revealed this underlying power but the potential was always there. The remaining six bottles will be opened only on treasured occasions such is the status of the best semillon I have consumed since first tasting these wines in 1968. A truly unique wine.

7/2/19, 5:20 PM - I agree completely. This is the best vintage of the best semillon made in the Hunter Valley, or anywhere else for that matter.

Premox again - third straight bottle! I now avoid Maltroye’s white wines, even though they can be very good.

12/10/18, 1:32 PM - Try a decant and sit it in the frig for a day or so. I agree, they are poxed, but I don't regularly detect the apple cider/bruised apple notes all the time. Maybe there is simply so much sulphur bound up in their wines that they cannot go completely poxed?

The score encompasses the entire experience of drinking a 65 year old Barolo at my 65th birthday. Used, and needed, the Durand to open. The wine was surprisingly fresh, tannins still firm. Exceptionally smooth mouth feel, acidity fading a bit but still carrying the wine, returning with a spiciness on the finish. The aromatics of the wine did not show up until a couple hours into the evening - I was reticent to decant because of concern the wine would fade too quickly. Need not have worried. Red cherry flavors, spicy, some black fruit present. Incredibly long finish. A fabulous experience, money well spent. I may never again drink a wine as old as I am - so I treated this as once in a lifetime.

9/23/18, 2:59 PM - I'm 65 in December and have the exact same wine to celebrate the occasion. Thank you and I will decant.
