4/22/24, 4:45 PM - Nice note, but 87 the right score?
3/29/24, 5:12 PM - Hey RDF, nice to hear from you. The 2021 was a wonderful year for PN and Zin from the RRV. Looking forward to the winery pick up in early April. Always fun to taste some wines and buy a few extras.
3/29/24, 4:22 PM - Interesting notes on this obscure wine. Impossible to find. Very few bottles held in CT community. Production must be very small or maybe discontinued; too bad if this is the case.
12/18/23, 9:10 AM - Nice note. I guess, I'll have to find some.
1/9/24, 5:41 PM - The impact of smoke on grapes is not fully understood - welcome to the effect of climate change. Down here Sonoma, it wasn't a complete loss, but some areas were never picked especially along the slower maturing coast. Other areas, faired a bit better if they pick early, where outside of the smoke zone, or if they were growing thicker skinned varietals. In any case, you can't generalize completely, but you really have to know your AVAs and wineries. However, I would avoid any one-off declassified wines. Bottom line, I'll focus on the 2021s in CA and OR, that are special.
1/4/24, 5:15 PM - Nice find! Should be lovely.
1/4/24, 5:16 PM - Nice find! Should be lovely.
1/3/24, 4:14 PM - Hey Cailles, happy New Year. I agree. Westside Road Neighbors is a wonderful wine and is consistently one of the best Sonoma Pinot Noirs, year-in and year-out. It is a blend of three great Russian River Pinot Noir vineyards: Williams Selyem Estate, Allen Vineyard, and Rochioli Riverblock Vineyard. In addition, Williams Selyem bottles these three wines individually as vineyard designated Pinot Noirs. If you like Westside Road Neighbors, you will most likely enjoy the vineyard designated bottlings as well.
12/3/23, 10:43 AM - The 2009 is a beautiful wine from Lapierre. Any other favorite vintages from this producer. Which vintage is closest to 2009?
11/26/23, 1:47 PM - Hi Jack - Thanks for the nice comment. I suspect (or hope) I had a corked bottle, which is why I didn’t rate the wine. The only truly smoked tainted wine I've ever had, smelled like an ashtray. The 2020 Clos smelled more of a funky cork. But don't want to overlook all 2020s, however. Here in Sonoma, some of the thicker skinned grapes did nicely - assuming the wines were checked serval times in the lab for signs of smoke taint. Pinot and Chardonnay were not so lucky because their thin skins absorbed more of the taint. Bottom line, I've just bought very few 2020 wines.
11/20/23, 8:43 PM - Thanks for the nice review. Have you had a chance to try the Clos Blanc?
9/9/23, 8:30 AM - Thanks for the note on the is wine. Where did you find this bottle?
8/31/23, 9:39 AM - Hey Mark, thanks for the nice review of the '86 Magdelaine. I have always had an interest in this Chateau and, specifically, that vintage since I interned at Magdelaine '86. It's a long time ago... Over the years, I have found the wine to be more reserved, but I am pleased you enjoyed it. I'm a big fan of the 2005, but haven't had that vintage in a few years; maybe, I'll open up a '05 over the holidays. I believe 2011 was the last Magdelaine vintage. Cheers!
8/31/23, 8:20 PM - Hi DQ, Nice to meet you on CT. As I recall, the soils at Magdelaine are limestone rich, which may partially explain its old world profile. I wish it was still produced. Keep enjoying your Magdelaines. Cheers!
7/23/23, 5:45 PM - Hi Tim, nice to read this review as we have both commented on how enjoyable this vintage is and how it continues to impress. Pleased to learn that the vintage is evolving slowly. I'll have to try one this fall when the weather cools. Would be pleased to drop by anytime you plan on opening a 5.0l. :-) Cheers!
7/25/23, 7:39 AM - @ Tim Heaton - Likewise, should you visit Sonoma County. Cheers.
6/17/23, 5:52 PM - WS uses French oak, often from François Frères.
5/29/23, 7:57 AM - I guess it's time to visit Sonoma. Annually, Williams Selyem makes approximately 53 bottlings, of which ~27 are Pinot Noir and ~7 are Chardonnay, plus other varietals and blends; production is small. The RRV bottling is alway a wonderful wine to seek out as it consists entirely RRV fruit, including grapes from several Westside Road properties. The 2021 bottling is excellent, as well.
6/1/23, 9:17 PM - Hi Cailles, I work there a few days a week. I'm sure a visit can be arranged.
4/26/23, 9:01 AM - Thank you for the wonderful review. I must seek out this wine.
4/26/23, 8:43 AM - Thank you for your review. One of my favorite Madeiras and from a wonderfully small vineyard. Like you, it is getting expensive. Cheers.
4/8/23, 8:47 AM - Nice. I believe, Saitone is across the road from Papera, which says something. So many of Mike's wines come from this area. Perfect for Zins.
4/8/23, 9:42 AM - Likewise. Nice to know you still enjoy good Zins from Sonoma. Saitone Ranch was for sale about 10 years ago. Mike Officer help save the old vines on the property, by getting Williams Selyem to purchase the historic vineyard. Nice save!
4/6/23, 7:24 AM - How fun!
4/5/23, 6:26 PM - Nice! Lynch Bages always punches above its weight.
3/20/23, 8:34 AM - Hi z_willus_d, it sure is a fun wine to consume. I suspect the wine will be alive and kicking on its 20th birthday. BTW, thanks for the attribution. Cheers.
2/22/23, 11:27 AM - Hi Bobby, thanks for the message. I believe your information is correct. I vaguely remember Château de la Guimonière no longer producing wine starting sometime in the first decade of 2000. I only found this wine at the Boulder Liquor Mart back in the late 1980s, where they had some older vintages. I also think they carried the 1990 when it was released. Unfortunately, I have not seen Château de la Guimonière around since then. The property represented a nice value pay, but the wines do not have the staying power of some Loire producers. I have few bottles left that I open up without any expectations. Good luck in your efforts to find out more information.
1/30/23, 8:07 AM - Perhaps location partially explains the difference.
1/7/23, 2:46 PM - It's a wonderful wine. Curious how the '19 and '20 turned out.
12/23/22, 7:20 AM - Nice note and pleased that the 2015 is doing well. I last tasted the wine 2018 and it seemed one-dimensional. I guess the wine has had time to further integrate. Good news.
12/23/22, 9:36 AM - Hi Alexander, thanks for responding to my response. I meant to say: I last tasted the 2015 vintage in 2018 and it seemed one-dimensional. I was not talking about the Clinet's 2018 vintage. Sorry for the confusion. Anyway, I could not correct the my original response to make sense. Glad the 2015 vintage is improving and agree that Clinet is great producer. Cheers.
12/4/22, 12:01 PM - Lucky you!
11/27/22, 7:19 AM - Thank you for the nice note on this wine. Any thoughts on the 2020 vintage ? I've not heard much about how it turned out.
11/19/21, 8:51 AM - Nice write-up. Any thoughts on the '19 Clos Blanc?
11/7/22, 8:31 PM - Any thoughts on the just released 2020s? How do they compare to the 2019s?
11/6/22, 6:53 AM - Thank you for the wonderful tasting note. I assume the format was a 750ml?
10/17/22, 4:38 PM - Sounds lovely. Thanks for the notes.
8/30/22, 8:37 PM - Hi Forceberry, thank you for most amazing wine critique I've read in a very long time. One could not ask for more other than perhaps a glass of the Madeira you are describing. Again, thank you!
8/21/22, 8:29 PM - Probably one of my favorite wines/sherries. Love dry Oloroso. Imossible to locate. Good find.
7/31/22, 6:58 AM - Sounds flawed.
7/25/22, 10:47 AM - Curious how the Clos de St. Catherine compares to the Grand Cru also made by Baumard?BTW, I love a simple pear tart with Loire dessert wines.
7/12/22, 7:05 AM - Any thoughts on the color of the 1908?
7/1/22, 6:52 PM - Wow, that's unexpected. Was hoping for something great.
5/30/22, 6:52 AM - Very helpful note for one of my favorite 2008s. Thank you.
5/24/22, 7:09 AM - 2016 Papera Zinfandel is an especially good vintage. Wish I had more. Cheers.
4/25/22, 8:33 AM - Enjoyed your comment. Magdelaine has a good amount of minerality, which I attribute to the limestone soils on part of the property. Always seemed "old school" to me. Never opulent, but excellent years do have a bit more depth. Last vintage was 2011. Now part Belair-Monange.
3/5/22, 8:53 PM - Thanks for the note on this vintage. Seems like a very nice experience.
2/26/22, 7:11 AM - I wonder if the licorice flavor has a half-life and will fade with time? Could the wine be corked especially with the broth element presenting itself? Hope it was just a bad bottle. Will open one up.
2/23/22, 4:54 PM - I'm getting interested in these wines again. Do you have a favorite Kracher?
2/18/22, 6:09 PM - '99 was such a good vintage. Overlooked.
2/7/22, 6:11 AM - Nice review on a hard to find wine. A white in red wine territory.
1/24/22, 8:12 PM - Thanks for the nice note. Looking forward to trying one. Have you had the Clos 2019 yet?
1/12/22, 5:30 PM - Hi - I just read you review. I've only had one wine that had a banana element that I can recall - it was a Chardonnay. If my recollection all these many years later is still correct, flavor profiles, such as banana, have a half-life and should diminish over time. Would be fun to see if this still present or just a one-off. Cheers.
1/9/22, 12:51 PM - Thanks for the note. Was it a 750ml and what was the color like?
1/8/22, 5:44 PM - Nice note. "Drink now." Any wiggle room on further age?
1/3/22, 9:04 AM - 375ml or 750ml? And what was the color like? My half bottles are dark copper in color and the flavors are starting to dry-out.
12/22/21, 9:49 PM - Enjoyed the review of Meyney -- in addition to the write-ups on all those wonderful Italian wines. One of my favorite QPR producers (in good vintages). Happy holidays.
12/16/21, 5:45 PM - I've not seen any 1993 around, but there are bottles of 1990 out there.
Thanks for letting us know about this problem. We will review your comments and be in touch soon with an update.
