The nose on this alone warrants serious consideration. Amazing combination of spice, floral notes, smoke, beef, blended red and dark fruit. Outstanding

Nose was shut, dry. Much better palate. Red fruit, acidity.

Lovely mineral nose. Tannins a bit dryer.

Tasted alongside the evangile. More classic Bordeaux with full but round characteristics - smooth finish.

Beautifully elegant with red fruit, a burgundy drinker’s Bordeaux.

Got the balance of this vintage right.

But way overpriced for what it is.

I actually like the elegance of this vintage which may appeal more to Burgundy drinkers.

Nicely floral. Better on second day with classic 96 sensations.

Weakest bottle. Guessed Ovello

Medicinal nose. Palate also hints of the same. Palate felt disjointed. Possible this was ever so slightly tainted but hard to tell.

Pretty good depth. But not properly balanced.

A bit grainy. Guessed Rio Sordo.

Ok on it is own. But not near the others.

Guessed Rabaja

Another good bottle combining elegance with tannins and depth and grip. Can see how Roaga makes amazing wines from this site.

A lighter footed syrah with a subtle nose of mint, spice and red fruit. Medium bodied palate, red fruit some grainy tannins. Easy to drink.

Had over two evenings.

Subtle nose of rock minerals, sliced pineapple and citrus, some warmth. Medium bodied palate with a blend of ripe yellow fruit, gravel, and mint. It really had good balance with lingering acidity.

Smoke, cedarwood, blended dark and red fruit on the nose. Medium body palate with gentle acidity and similar fruit sensations as from the nose.

Drinking perfectly now.

Had with BurgNick

Beautiful nose of sesame, roasted nuts and perfectly ripe fruit. The palate had great balance and full ripeness without being overdone. I prefer this style than many of the overly reductive wines that are so popular in these times.

Decent balance of ripe sensations and minerals on both the nose and palate. Better to pair with food.

Apparently this wine was only made in 2016 - 100% Pinot Meunier, disgorged Dec 2019. I really liked the nose here - had minerality, lemon zest and a touch oxidative notes. The palate was medium bodied with nice acidity, some citrus notes, sharp. It was not tasted blind.

Blind 80’s - 90’s Bordeaux dinner

Decanted for 30 minutes. Had a nice nose of blended red and dark fruit, spice and cedar.

Palate medium bodied + with smooth tannins, velvet, hints of chocolate powder and similar sensations to the nose and

I guess this shows that at his peak, Parker was a great taster in this region and the wines he rated highly have aged well.

Precise, some reduction, but not sacrificing depth. A lovely Chenin but also a bit hyped for what it is as so many white burg are fashioned in a similar style.
Red
Tasted blind - extracted dark fruit, dry, oak. Of course it could improve with 20 years of age.

See my note from 2 years ago - quite nice but noticeable oak and tropical sensations, which I particularly enjoyed because the depth and concentration nicely offset it.

Typical of the new wave of reductive white burgs which increasingly taste all the same. Not bad but not differentiated. I really don't understand why the critics love these wines?
Red
Tasted blind. Dark extracted fruit, mint, menthol. Like most Arnoux's from this period, they are not very good.

From magnum.

I had this almost one year ago and the nose is still a bit closed. But the palate combines new and old world styles with lovely concentration, acidity, gravel minerality underneath the blended red and dark fruit sensations.

See my previous notes - excellent wine and showing beautifully at this still youthful age.

In the past, the wine was mostly about its extremely floral red fruited nose, but with a palate that felt a bit too thin and almost under-ripe. I think the last time I opened one was in 2019. But wow, it has improved a lot - still a light bodied wine on the palate, but has gained complexity with some minerals, garden soil. Very nice.

I brought this and an 05 Butteaux to a blind dinner and it was poured by the somm. Having done this pair three times it is very easy to identify - it is much more reductive, mineral and layered and blended white and yellow fruit while the Butteaux was riper, rounded and full - yellow fruit. Both are good, just different styles. I informed the group they were both Raveneau but had one thing in common and everyone thought it was the vintages being different.

This pair raises an interesting question around ‘terroir’ and wine making: these wines are so different that I doubt the explanation is purely driven by site but more a combination of picking riper fruit in Butteaux and handling it with less reductive techniques in the basement.

Tasted blind. Clearly a Blanc de blancs with good tension, minerals and Cut white fruits. Solid champagne but don’t believe the Instagram hype.

Beautiful nose of driveway gravel, blended red and black fruit and a bit of rustic soil. Palate was medium bodied+, very nicely balanced acidity and tannins, the latter needing a bit of time to smooth out - showed darker fruit relative to the nose with added minerality. The Richebourg of Montalcino.

After hearing that 16 Coche has improved since tasting it on release popped a bottle to see. It just lacks the character of the father’s wines, less depth and complexity. My view is clearly in the minority among so many label drinkers.

Tasted blind along side a Rayas. Although young, this had much more purity of fruit, very elegant with varietal expression. Decanting it for about 2 hours really helped. The 2016 Comando G's are very good across the line up.

Part of a grenache blind tasting. A warmer expression here, with some rustic notes, but balanced by some classic Rayas purity. It was a good wine, but maybe a bit warm, at least compared to the better Comando G.

A solid expression of Cabernet Franc. Nose had spice, dark fruit. Palate was medium+ bodied, good acidity, dark fruit. If tasted blind, a nice right bank.

Less floral nose than other vintages - ripeness slightly too obvious. Probably will show better if you post it on instagram.
