Enjoying this as a PnP on St Maarten. Outstanding value for money.

Gravel Sandy with a dry finish. Just perfect for my beef at Altro in Porto Cupercoy.

Savory and light sand bark on the nose. Classic French

Very dark. Smokey olive paste deep dark anise aromas. Fantastically pure and lovely with savory charred rare beef, soy, nori, tree bark, and plums. Perfect ripeness and seemingly no alcohol. Sailing long finish. This is gorgeous.

Deep and dark purplish red. Layered nose with some new French oak influences. Notes of cinnamon, pencil shavings, dark red berries, dark bitter cocoa and cassis. Heavy tannins (7/10) and medium plus to full bodied. Needs a bit of time to beef up and integrate further. Layered palate with bramble berries, black cherries, blackberries, spices and tons of crushed gravel. Long and lingering finish. Drink from 2018 till 2033. (93+)

Second stop on day three and finally made it to Napa. We tasted through some wines from Standard Deviation Wines and Addax Wines with Josh and Cheryl at Brasswood. Next up for Addax Wines is their Cabernet Sauvignon from the Tench Vineyard in Oakville. Made by Russell Bevan.

Deep and inky purplish ruby red. A bit raw on the nose but it is just a baby, having been bottled recently. A bit of tar and smoked cigars on the attack followed up by juicy black fruits and rich cinnamon paste. Heavy tannins (8.5/10) that need some time to mellow out with a full body. Rich and voluptuous with black and blue fruits, baking spices, black tea and gravel. Long and lingering finish. Lots of potential and patience will be rewarded. Drink till 2039. (95+)

Last wine up for Addax Wines is their current release Cabernet Sauvignon from the Tench Vineyard in Oakville. Made by Russell Bevan.

Inky violet purplish red in appearance. Smells like a bakers kitchen with rich caramel, brown sugar and cinnamon followed up by black and blue fruits as well as toasted almonds. Silky smooth tannins but powerful (7.5/10) and full bodied. Almost feels like satin on the palate with blackberries, black juicy plums, dark spices, blueberries, perfume and a bit of dark gravel. Long and lingering finish. Drink till 2036."

Inaugural vintage from the renewed Reverie Winery. Medium yellow hue with an inviting nose that evolves with air. White flowers on the nose with citrus zest and some honeysuckle. Additionally perfumey notes and some tropical fruits when it warmed up. Day two brought on more citrus notes like oranges and something similar to acacias. Crisp and fresh on the palate with bright acidity (6.5/10) and medium bodied. Solid minerality on the palate with notes of citrus, stone and tropical fruits. Maybe some lychee. Medium plus finish. Drink till 2021.

Hmm...these are disappearing FAST. I was too slow to celebrate the 80 degree March day in Texas, so by the time I got around to popping this one it was already back to 60 (the next day). As others have mentioned, this Rose is crazy good. I love that this one seems to have a limestone salinity to it, and along with a strawberry that is quite apparent from the get-go, this one tricks the brain to go all over the place (herbs, spice, acidity). At this rate, this six pack won't make it to April.

Deep mix of garnet and ruby red core with medium garnet edges. Layered nose of a 2010 with damp forest floor, a little stinky, leaves, red berries, cigar box and more spices. Heavy tannins (7.5/10) and balanced acidity. Well integrated and full bodied. Lots of red berries on the palate with earthy undertones and notes of tobacco leaves and bramble berries. Tasted at Vilafonté with Sophia on 12/18/2015.
Color: Very high intensity.  Coats the glass. Purple.
Nose/Smell: Needs to open a little bit more.  But started with cassis, anise, wet stones and a little meat.
Palate/Taste: A rough and harsh start. Slightly savory with notes of meat and black pepper. High furry tannins (7.5/10) and full body.  Grabs the front and mid palates. Long and lingering finish,  quite grippy.
Opinion: Needs some time to fully integrate,  would not crack open another until 2017 at the earliest and can easily go for 15 years. A ton of potential. Less approachable than the 2012 Series M at this time.

Light nose vanilla and the acidity does start to show in the finish. The finish is on the shorter side of moderate which is a slight detraction as the acidity then comes through more strongly.

Chocolate in the finish.

Blackberry, black cherry, leather and floral notes on the nose. Much more aromatic than the Gran Reserva. Medium bodied, perhaps a touch more (13.5% ABV) and opened three hours ahead of time, showed quite well. Blackberry and black cherry upfront with a mix of brightness, and deeper, softer fruit notes. Tannins come in on the back, but were surprisingly well integrated for a wine so young. Plum, licorice, leather notes and soft spices all come in on the backend and into and through the finish. At first, I thought this wine simply showed very good fruit as well as balance and integration. But after being open for six hours total, the wine showed additional upfront complexity, more nuance behind and better overall elegance, showing where this wine will be in a few years.

Nose started with chalk, and very tight. As it opened the was some dark berries and wood. Palate was very light with cassis. Low plus to moderate tannins 5.5/10. Moderate body that both need to integrate with more time. Moderate finish that lingers for a few seconds. Not sure how much oak but doesn't seem like that much due to lower than expected tannins. Drunk decanted. Warm, deep, intense nose of sandalwood, spice, polished wood, black fruit macerated in liqueur, and overripe plum. Dense, thick and well-structured on the palate, with serried tannins, and a very coherent, well-knit core of rich, stewed bittersweet fruit, pepper, and coconut. A tad lacking in both typicity and terroir, with the new wood rather prevalent. Already drinking well, and should improve in the short to medium term. A well made but ultimately unremarkable wine, which is reasonably good value nonetheless, and one of the stronger offerings from Toro.

I gotta honestly say I don't know how anyone is drinking this right now without some SERIOUS airtime. PnP was like drinking cranberry juice. An hour in the decanter did next to nothing in terms of opening up anything beyond a wound up ball of acidic red fruit-ish tonalities. Bitter cranberry, pomegranate, tart red currant, unripe boysenberry. After 30 minutes, my palate was still numb. Back in the bottle it went for the next day. No way to accurately rate it right now except to say it is waaay too young to be messing with right now. This was even more clamped down than a Roy Piper (which is predominantly Moulds) I had a while back. Such the temper-tantrum toddler this Becklyn was.

We shall see what tomorrow brings, but for now, I'd say 2018++ before I mess with this again.

RECAP & DAY 2: The exact treatment this received the first day was PnP and into a decanter for 30 minutes. Vigorous swirling in the decanter at 54 degrees. About a 2 oz pour to make the aforementioned assessment - ultimately on the first day there was next to no change in flavor after the brief decant. Back in bottle, corked for 24 hours at 54 degrees.

Now at DAY 2 this monster was starting to show its much more considerate side. Notes of red and purple berry fruit, especially a red raspberry flavor. Not really any black fruit here (possibly faint black currant, but more on the red currant side of things). Also dominated by brambly fruit flavors of huckleberry and boysenberry, which added interest, with almost a mountain fruit quality about it. The faintest hint of violets?

A little bit of sweetness and bitterness competing on the back end (still obvious signs of its youth), but night and day in terms of accessibility compared to day one. The extreme tartness has subsided considerably, with more of a "pleasant" clamp on the palate from the finish (again, blame youth) but managed to frame out the fruit nicely. The candied dark red licorice sweetness was fairly delicate and reminded me a little of a better version of the sweetness I get from a young Quivet.

Once it warmed up to a cool room temperature (63 degrees) in the glass, it started to grab my attention more. It started to move from a 90-91 point wine into a 92-94 point wine. I was trying to pay specific attention to the progression of this wine in open air over the course of the next 4 hours. More and more air locked this into a 92-94+ point wine for me at the moment. I still saved a bit in the bottle for day 3, so we shall see how that goes.

DAY 3: Fairly shut down at this point. The viscosity has thickened and the fruit deepened some, but it is a little muted now. Time to leave the remaining bottles alone for another 2 years in my opinion. I'll revisit in late 2018. Still shows promise. 93++ points.

This is a big wine that belies its relatively tame 14.1% alcohol level. Dark, dark purple with a tabacco box nose and sweet fruit. Tannins are recessed and wine is drinking smooth, rich and balanced.

Zachys Wine Vault II (Le Bernadin Prive): We got these for such a steal at Park Ave Liquors - wish we'd purchased the whole set they had. Lovely wine. Not detailed notes (was drunk fairly late in the night), but bottle went quickly and was enjoyed by all.

Deep ruby and purplish red. Lots of blueberry, blackberry, forest floor, not overly fruity on the nose. Slight undertone of nutmeg and burnt wood. Medium plus bodied with moderate tannins (5.5/10). Lots of dark berries and woody notes. Moderate plus finish. Definitely excited to see what happens on day two. 89+

9/26/16, 10:34 AM - Day two added some additional complexity on the nose, with notes of baking spices, cloves and even some dark cocoa. Dried out a bit on the palate too. Increase to 90.

Decanted 90 min, drank over next 2.5 hrs from decanter. In a few words....simply not good. Muted nose, little fruit, very disappointing. The Estate is much better, and it is overpriced. The is the best $15 wine I've had that costs $75. Donating other bottles.
  • Millennial Drinkers commented:

9/9/16, 6:57 AM - Is this the first time you have tried it? We tried it at the estate last year and it was stunning. Possibly a bad bottle?

  • Millennial Drinkers commented:

9/4/16, 6:35 PM - For the price of a good and solid glass of wine with a little bite. A little weak nose with a good deal of raspberries and strawberries , good with herbs , a little licorice and finally white pepper . In the mouth is fresh, fruity and juicy. Again, red berries and green herbs and slightly sweet vanilla and English licorice. Continued part tannins that sits on the gums and provides structure and a fine bite. Drink fine now and should be a walk around the carafe first.

My favorite of the Pax 04 taste off. Tobacco, grilled meat, moderately earthy with a lot of depth and complexity to the fruit. Fully mature.

Third wine at Oakton this afternoon and second white. Slightly darker than the 2015 Celler Xavier Clua Terra Alta Il lusió, still clear and pale yellow with a beige hue. Very interesting nose with some sea shells, not like the ocean, more like mussels. Complex palate with some savory notes to start that opened up with some hay, white flowers, honey suckle, and undertones of white fruits. Moderate acidity (6.5/10) with a moderate plus body. Definitely seems like a food wine and packs a punch. Long and lingering dry finish. Absolutely delicious Garnatxa Blanca. Drink till 2023.

Drank with Gyles Webb.
Color: Ruby red
Nose/Smell: Light red cherries
Palate/Taste: Red fruit, moderate and solid tannins (5.5/10) with a moderate body. Slightly tangy. Needs time to fully integrate.
Opinion: Prefer the older vintages of Thelema's Shiraz

Rosé
2015 Tercero Mourvedre Rosé Vogelzang Vineyard Santa Barbara County
First Rose of the tasting is the Mourvedre Rose from Tercero Wines. Absolutely beautiful in color, completely different than the Two Shepherds and the Scalon Cellars. Bright, clear and light orangey pink, almost like peach or beige. Nose was coated with white and tropical fruits such as guava, white peaches, lychee, and some light green apples. So much going on but a lot more complex than just the clean fruits. There was also a slight dirty fruit side accompanied with some light wood chips and wet stones as it warmed up. Strong acidity with a crisp, tangy, beautifully tart and refreshing body. Started out with guava and lychee on the palate that definitely brought out some additional tartiness in the white and red fruits. As it opened up there were some slight savory notes with a little wet grass like right after a rain storm. Very refreshing. Long and lingering finish. Was a little tight to start but by the end we were very impressed! Cannot wait to try more of the wines made by Larry. Highly recommend and drink till 2022.

Direi esperienza entusiasmante.

would say exciting experience . It is a decidedly unconventional wine. 17 degrees usually are scary in a wine. Well in this wine I am , I will not say absent , but functional to the management of aromas so I decided and unusual . The nose gives aromas of Mediterranean and marmalade without perceiving the alcoholic strength. In the mouth you feel the power , but the control is absolute . I know the feelings of prunes and myrtle, follow blackberry jam . Long : we talk about minutes . Finished in 2 for lunch , after allowing it to breathe three hours in bottles , let us clean , without any kind of stunning given by the alcoholic strength. amazing wine to drink definitely on succulent dishes , or even sour .

Intensely penetrating and seductive aromas of wild-berries, crushed blue & black fruits, vanilla, cedar, cassis and & blackberries big in your face. Huge amounts of scrumptious blueberry, black plum, espresso, black-cherry and vanilla are dense and concentrated across on the palate lingering forever. The pure, fine grain tannins carry the wine effortlessly through the long voluptuous finish.
