2016 Et Fille Pinot Noir Palmer Creek Vineyard Eola - Amity Hills

The palate leans toward darker flavors, with bitter cherry, smoke, tea, and black pepper. Firm tannins add to the wine's rich structure. If you're a fan of this style of Pinot Noir you'll enjoy this wine, as I did. I found it a pleasant surprise and a good value. I'll be looking for more. (I bought this wine for $19.98 at my local shop on sale; the wine-searcher price of $48.47 seems a bit high for this wine.)

Powerfully extracted fruit with blackcurrant and blackberry. Firm tannins. Heavy application of new oak. This is a big wine with dense fruit, firm tannins and lots of oak. I'd give it a few years to integrate, but right now it's disjointed.

2013 Daou Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Paso Robles
This wine is primarily Cabernet Sauvignon with smaller percentages of the other Bordeaux varietals. It is garnet, almost inky in the glass with a pronounced nose and overwhelming flavors of blackberries, blueberries, licorice, oak, vanilla and just a hint of smoke. It has a lengthy and very tannic finish. This wine has garnered some good to excellent scores from the established wine press and in-house critics for major wine retailers, but I think their scores and tasting notes might be predictions of what the wine will taste like in 5-10 years, rather than an accurate appraisal of what it tastes like right now. Right now, it is an over-the-top, fruit, oak and tannin bomb. Even a double decant did nothing to soften those three tasting elements. I found it almost undrinkable. But who knows, perhaps extended cellaring will produce a more integrated and drinkable wine. It's yet another example of just how subjective wine tasting can be. I note that other tasters had a polar opposite reaction to the wine, finding it "seamless," "mild," "approachable," and "integrated" -- four adjectives, which I would never include in a sentence beginning with Daou Cabernet Sauvignon 2013. On the plus side, the wine retails for around $25/ bottle. Three bottles tasted with consistent notes.

2006 Giorgio Pelissero Langhe Long Now Langhe DOC Nebbiolo Blend, Nebbiolo

Dark, opaque and powerful. Black cherry, tar, rose petal, blackberry. The palate, though backward, is balanced, with fine tannins and acidity. Will not appeal to Nebbiolo purists, but is immensely enjoyable.

7/12/14, 9:29 PM - I admit that was an overly broad comment. I enjoy Barolo and Barbaresco immensely, but keep an open mind for wines. This wine will not be included in a lineup of great barolo or barbaresco, and this will limit its appeal, and this is a shame. The wine stands on its own for its qualities and complexity. But it's like a cross of 2 breeds at a dog show, there isn't a pigeonhole for it and therefore many people will look with disdain at the product.

Old vine Carignane and Grenache, quite dark and brooding, black fruit, flavors just peeking out from under the crushed stones this is lathered in, reserved, dark, secretive, this needs a number of years to show what it's got. I suspect it will be quite enjoyable at some point, but right now it's hiding.
