2015 Marie Courtin Champagne Efflorescence Extra Brut Pinot Noir
Disgorged November 2018. Farmed biodynamic, 100% Pinot Noir done in old wood and without dosage. 2nd bottle this year. The contrast between this bottle and the previous is tonight's bottle is over two nights. This gives me the added insight and a quieter context this time, just me and the wine. Aromatics of older wood and lime skin. When cool, this seems very apple dominant, with a brassy quality and more mouth-filling texture, which belies the lack of dosage (although, for me this isn't unusual as I consistently get plenty of texture in Dominique's wines, despite the sans dosage approach). And as with her wines, often I find that the best qualities come through when I don't hit it with too much chill. It's a warm night here, the wine is warming up fast, and the unfolding of the texture happens as expected. As it breathes and warms up, the yellow apple takes on a honeyed quality, and finally red fruit shows up in the form of strawberry preserve. The finish shows good length and persistence, marrying that rich yellow apple and the strawberry/red fruit. The stony quality that I look for is here, but it's more subtle in this bottle, even with the warmer temp. After 2 bottles now of the 2015, I find this vintage more geared towards the near-term, quite opposite of the 2014 and the power of that wine. Got 4 bottles left of the 2015, will space them out over the next 3-5 years.

4/8/22, 10:06 AM - Great notes FMIII! Looks like I'll continue to hold my remaining 2014s and open up a 2015 next.

2014 Marie Courtin Champagne Efflorescence Extra Brut Pinot Noir
Bottle #7. Opened for Mother's Day. 100% Pinot Noir, no dosage, farmed bio from the Tremble slope in Polisot. This stuff for me is magic. It has a 'something', an imprint of the soil, the place. The fruit, a unique red berry note that unwinds when warm (and to those who drink this wine too cold, you're gonna miss the beauty of the fruit). Tiny, gentle bubbles, with aromas of stone, sea air....this is grown just north of Chablis so the linkage in the aroma is for me clear. Salty, with green apple, some grapefruit in this bottle, the zing of the lemon pith acidity, too. Finishes with a bright push of saline that is unmistakable, you cannot miss it. I drink a lot of Champagne these days, of different styles, dosages and elevage on lees, all of it creating diversity. But with this 2014 Efflorescence, it is uniquely distinctive, an energy and texture that I love. And as a final reminder, let this warm up, allow the bubbles to fade out, and then you'll find the creaminess pick up and the red berry come through, the magic. I'm down to two bottles of this wine now, and it's time to go source more for the years ahead. Unique, fantastic, magic.

5/9/21, 5:07 PM - Great notes and looking forward to drinking my bottle and exploring my first Marie Courtin champagne. Did you pair the champagne with any food?

12/30/21, 7:40 PM - Csimm, we should have a Marie Courtin tasting!

Just saw my Champagne retailer is getting pre-arrival for the 2018 Presence. I have a '15 and '17 Presence which I haven't tried yet, but will probably pull the trigger on the '18 anyways. Some positive reviews already on it on CT-- I'm sure FMIII has already tried it.

12/31/21, 8:47 AM - FM3, I'm on WB Forum with you. I recently asked about your upcoming Champagne trip in the Champagne thread.

I was actually able to pick up a few more bottles of 2014 Efflorescence from various retailers and got them at around $84, which is not horrible these days. I feel like some specialty retailers have increased Marie Courtin pricing to 90-100/bottle.
