Drunk it in 5 consecutive days, getting belter by day. After the third day, became even more smooth with subdue tanning. Great "Bordeaux" for the price.

Jetzt austrinken.

Medium yellow color.

Match-stick reduction. Lemon zest and pith. Strong honeysuckle and subtle oak and a hint of fennel. Nectarine, quince, and tropical fruit. Grapefruit acidity. Texture is relatively light. Slight hotness in the back palate. Excellent acidity. Floral lift and long finish.

Ripe and bi bodied Meursault. Though, it's not weighty. Amazing intensity and tension.

Toast and brioche notes, noticeable wood, yet mineral and focused, no noticeable residual sweetness.
There is a VA note that I find pretty off-putting at the moment, but the other drinkers did not seem to care as much as I did.
Maybe this can go away with aging. Hence, may range for the rating.

I found this to be rather a wizard wheeze. Sadly, for the most part Champagne leaves my flinty Protestant heart rather cold; perhaps I am predestined to be miserable?

It was surprising to find this on the list of a sensationally awful bottle shop but I had read some good things and so after a quick bit of embezzling of funds (God wants us to be rich and happy, ergo he don't mind a spot of well directed criminality - the prosperity gospel really gets to the heart of the Sermon on the Mount and it really is the driving theme in the Gospel of Luke) this was had.

Nice notes of brioche, lovely white peach and nectarine fruit, not a grapefruit in sight and some bready autolysis stuff. Hint of almond. Lovely clarity and bead. I have to say that this was worth every penny I stole. It also provided a really nice way to welcome in the Festy Season and celebrate finishing a long, hard year and clearing the decks so that I have a fighting chance of a few weeks of unmitigated bliss before the damnation sets in again.

Very dense and complex Sauvignon Blanc, sourced from the coralline limestone soils of the Ciringa vineyard, the Slovenian part of Tement’s famous Zieregg single-vineyard on the other side of the Austrian-Slovenian border. The ‘Cirigna Reserve’ is vinified only in excellent vintages. The wine was fermented spontaneously with natural yeasts and spent 42 months on its fine lees in big neutral oak casks. Bright straw-yellow in color and an intense mineral driven nose evoking scents of grapefruit, Mirabelle, orange zest, dried herbs and a touch of flint. The powerful but well-balanced palate reveals concentrated yellow tropical fruit, notes of white currants and Williams pear, a serious depth and a great acid structure. Sustained aftertaste with attractive herbal nuances and a pleasant touch of bitterness. This is drinking very well now, and will easily hold another 3-5 years.

Two pretty large coravin pours into 2 glasses. Tasted at first pour and every half hour through 3 hours. 15% ABV (high for Ciacci in my experience). At first the wine looked rather old, surprisingly, with a distinctly bricked meniscus for a 7 year old wine. The color brightened at about hour 2 and by the 3rd had almost completely lost the brick color and was less dark and more bright and translucent. The nose was fairly effusive initially with some scorched earth, florals and dark berry jam. As time progressed the floral elements lessened and the fruit notes seemed brighter and less jammy. Palate was very disjointed initially with a distinctly bitter finish, similar to what I experienced with the 2016 Ciacci Favius Syrah, not pleasant. There was some menthol and red cherry fruit, spice and bright acidity. Tannin was medium(-). As the wine got air it did settle down and lost the bitter edge, though at no point did it seem consistent with most of my previous Ciacci Brunello’s. It was distinctly better with food however, throughout the evening, which is somewhat consistent with my experience. At this point in its development it seemed best in the 2-3 hour window. I would agree with others that this is probably not going to be a long aging wine, in contrast to my original expectation. This was quite unusual for me from this traditional producer that I have tended to enjoy more than this.

Tasted over several hours. This was a major disappointment, with oak dominating over any other details. A vigorous shaking revealed a bit of fruit, but the wood still overpowered or any other facet. Given that I actually poured a glass away I can only rate Below Average.

It is a young wine for sure, with some extraction and tannins, but this did not lower my enjoyment of the wine. I was drinking the wine over two days and also put it in the big decanter, this helped the wine to develop some complexity and smooth out the tannins.

This is presenting itself very nicely at the moment. It has abundant fruit and the wood is not standing out.

I opened the bottle a few hours before dinner and put it back in the fridge. I decided not to decant, and I think it was a good decision because over the course of the evening the tannins became more and more prominent and the fruit retreated.

It was astounding to me that it was so enjoyable at this young age, even though it was a rather fruity wine and missing some complexity. With age, it will become a more serious wine I hope.

This field blend is as exotic as previous comments suggest. After first opening there is a small bit of off-putting oxidation, but that minimizes after opening up (and mostly unnoticable on day 2.) There is a definite richness on the palate, but in contrast to a previous note the sneakiness lay in the imperceptible acidity that helps balance the unusual flavor palette. See other notes for their various descriptors. Held up well accompanying tofu and shrimp fried rice on night 1 and was nice all by itself on night 2. Very Good to Excellent, upgraded to Excellent for its exoticism.

My only beef with Riesling is that most are too sweet for me. Even Kabinetts in most vintages. I do enjoy GGs but they run to the bone dry spectrum. This was in my wheelhouse tonight. Glad I bought 3 but wish it had been 6! Really loved this w/ Cuban sandwiches tonight! A little petrol on the nose is the only knock for my palate.

2019 Elena Walch Gewürztraminer Alto Adige - Südtirol
Retail $22. Under cork. I had the pleasure of sharing this wine over dinner with Karoline Walch, Elena’s daughter and current CEO of the brand. The wine is made in the tiny town of Tramin, the purported home Traminer, the parent grape that eventually mutated into a spicier version of itself, also known as Gewürztraminer (“gewürtz” means “spicy in German). Yes, the town is in Italy, which is confusing unless you have a Ph.D. in European History (which I don’t). A brilliant straw in the glass with the classic Gewürtz spices, fresh rose petals, and exotic fruit (kiwi?). The palate is virtually dry (if there is any residual sugar, it is more than counterbalanced by the acidity), with lovely fruit, tons of spice, and a lengthy finish. It is rare that I find a Gewürztraminer outside of Alsace that I enjoy, but I should have known that Elena Walch made one.

Under cork, this wine evolved beautifully over a few hours and then held up without issues over 2 days.

The colour is as expected with Clemens Busch - it looks a bit more golden and deeper than many other German kabinet Rieslings. The nose and palate evolved from almost Chablis like restraint when first opened to the usual Clemens-Bush GG riot of tropical fruits (even a hint of pineapple), stone fruits and, to me, a note of ginger/ginger flower. The texture is magical - lush but finishing crisp and clean and very, very long.

I confess that I struggle for objectivity with these wines - they really move me and have an incredible emotional impact that few wines do. For example the Keller wines, which are simply magnificent and expressions of Riesling purity don't move me like the Clemens Busch GG's do. I regard these wines as cheap, given what you get.

My score reflects the Cellar tracker scale - outstanding wine.

Drunk for dinner with duck pate toasts. Translucent deep purple-tinged garnet, bright and clear. Some dark cherry fruits, cranberries, smoke and hints of more mineral, earthy elements. Well judged acidity. Tannins present still. However, the overwhelming flavour is of oak - too much for my palate. There is not enough concentration or depth of fruit to balance the wood leaving one feeling one has drunk a watery cordial from a treen cup. At 5 years of age, I don't see this reaching harmonious balance with further keeping. My impression is that this entry level PN has had the same treatment as his top end wines and it hasn't been able to cope. Drinkable but limited real pleasure.

Fresh palate (10 months in steel tanks to preserve it) with lemon, pineapple, and mirabelle. Interestingly, it has some oily and petrol notes as well. Combined with the chalky minerality and 50 year old vines you get a very sophisticated Riesling GG.

Already very approachable at this young age!

This left me a bit puzzled. This was so tannic on the first day I had to take a sip of water after each sip of wine. No kidding. They were so mouth drying! Also, the amount of sediment in the bottle was strange.

Nonetheless, the wine fascinated me with its power.
Day 1: Cabernet Sauvignon is dominating with meaty and (green) bell pepper, then blackberries and cherry. Big tannins that give you something to chew on. The acidity gives a nice tension. Overall unsettled and missing balance.
Day 4: Tannins are tamed and give better mouthfeel. More room for the fruit. Better balance.

I will try to get 2 more bottles and store them away for 10+ years.

Another winner from this top QPR estate, almost as good as the 2015. 13% Abv. Drink 2025-2033, perhaps a bit longer. 92

Thanks, for both notes, very helpful!

Probably different to any Pinot, I ever had. First it's quiet austere. There's some of the usual Pinot aroma, but not much. Bit of an alcohol smell, though. On the palate, it's not really fruity, either. There's mostly earthiness and a lot of herbal or vegetable-like taste. Very light and refreshing, but with a lot of alcohol behind it, heating up mouth and throat. Very unusual balance. I can't say I want more of this.

Oh no, I don't know why, but it feels that more and more producers tend to sulfurize their wines too much. In this wine the nose is a wonderful burning match, though some of the fruit is lurking through. On the palate it is better. In the long finish you can estimate, what a great wine this could have been. But as long as you have it in your mouth the SO2 scent is dominating. What a shame!
  • lukeintowine commented:

6/9/20, 9:21 AM - It is also hard for me to believe that this is added sulfur. Because what Mark said is true, Teschke is not known for that. I am not doubting that there was something wrong with this bottle. Maybe the bottle was just flawed?

I would urge you to try another bottle from him. But certainly not everyone agrees with his style.

  • lukeintowine commented:

1/4/21, 4:32 AM - In the meantime I also tried this wine and I have to agree with the initial comment. Too much sulfur added. I can only guess if this was a fault in the cellar or on purpose..
Yes the wine is drinkable, but the true beauty is hidden somewhere under the SO2.

One more thing to add: This is the only Teschke wine where experienced this phenomenon until now.

My last one. Pear, mineral and flowers on the nose. Pear and limes on the palate. Decisive minerality that is more integrated than the electric jolt experienced when younger. I need to try more from this producer, if only to find out what "K.H." stands for. Excellent.

7/8/20, 3:42 AM - If I had to guess I would say K.H. stands for a firstname, something like "Karl-Heinz".

Red
2012 Scarpa Barbera d'Asti Superiore La Bogliona
Deep color Barbera, nose of tree bark and tobacco leaves.
Zesty acidity typical of Barbera from Asti in my experience. Black fruit gives it a loooooong finish. Chewy but not boring, the intense acidity keeps it interesting and lively. Drinks quickly. Can age.
