Day 1 : Upon decanting, 11:30 PM, I had the pleasant aromas of Christmas times past tickle my mind. Christmas tree, holly, cookies and candies. First taste was a little hot, had fine, yet young tannins, they are in need of more aging. The wine is in a semi dumb or sleeping stage today, IMO. Still obviously a pure, precise expressions, though muted slightly at this time. The oak integration is done and with a deft touch. At no point is the oak over done, it constantly appears in a complementary role. This wine needs 6-8 more years before it is approachable, IMHO!

After 2 1/2 hours from decant: Nose is still vague with a slight trace of blueberry. Palette is still a little hot, with a pronounced flavor of blueberries. Tannins are very fine and velvety though still gripping. Very drying finish at this time. It is not at a stage for delivering pleasure to the consumer.
Revisited after 8 + hrs: mellowed and approachable but less flavorful, tired and flat. Defiantly needs 6 - 8 more years in the cellar, may revisit in 2026.

From a magnum, double decanted for two hours and then took to a restaurant. Not a wow wine, nose was not the pronounced MRC nose! More subdued. It became slightly more open at the restaurant but still muted. The wine grew in body and mouth feel after decanting but flavors were never very pronounced. Some slightly roasted plum was detected and it made me think it may have been slightly cooked along the way! It may just be past it prime…26 yrs? Nevertheless we enjoyed it and found it elegant and pleasant to consume with our French dinner of veal chops. Two more mags to go, think I wil try the next one sooner than later.

1989 Château Mouton Rothschild Pauillac Red Bordeaux Blend

My sense was is that more modest scores for this wine are because of what it is not versus what it is. It is not a typical beast. It is not classic mouton. It is not an over the top fruit bomb from 1989.

This wine is sexy. It had great perfumed feminine nose with red currents, black plums, cedar, lead pencil, tobacco Leaf, green peppercorns, the complexity goes on and on.

Tasted side by side with the 1988. It is much more fresh and expressive than the 88.

Anyone who doesn’t love this wine then send it my way!
