The wine looks purple colored. The legs are medium. There is no sediment in the bottle. It smells like blackberry, black currant (cassis), prune, raisin and light toast. The body is medium/full. The wine has smooth texture. The wine finishes long. The wine has low acidity.

I prefer other Brunellos at this price point but a nice bottle of wine.

Very good, developing. HOLD. PnP enjoyed over two nights, both at a high level if not slightly more complete on night 2. Absolutely love the tension and focus here, but all data points suggest holding for further development. At this price, just a ridiculous value. highly recommended+

New producer to me, from Radda. Saturated, rich cherry nose- totally lovely. Some wild herbs but it’s the pure fruit which dominates. Good concentration on the palate, ample acidity, and what you’d call either ‘charmingly rustic’ or ‘rough’ tannic profile. Either way it’s in the good honest Chianti category- perfect with some BBQ meat, but nothing more profound than that. Also had a sip of the ‘17 Riserva which was really quite impressive, if too young

On initial pour the nose is dominated by a new car / fresh tar smell and the fruit on the palate is hidden under this flavor and a wall of tannin.

After 3 hours in the decanter (e.g. enough time to put the kids to bed), the new car smell settles down, some tart cherry comes out and the tannins settle down a bit, though the remains pretty tannic and carries plenty of acidity.

This is a promising wine with the structure to be very nice in 5-10 years, but it’s not nearly as approachable as the 2016 was at this point.

A shame. You can sense how good of a wine this is but the TCA gets in the way. A few hours in the decanter and it dissipated by maybe 5% but not enough to enjoy.

Hopefully my other bottle doesn’t show like this one.
  • Radders12345 commented:

5/4/23, 11:35 PM - What a shame. I’m not super sensitive to TCA (wine just feels muted to me) but I’ve always heard it gets worse with time in the glass / decanter

Peter's 40th (67 Pall Mall, London): Colour was light yellow with more of a green tinge to it than the Dauvissat enjoyed alongside it. Initially the nose showed reduction and it was difficult to enjoy with underlying white and yellow fruits. I left the glass alone for 30 mins + and the wine really transformed, and better still after 1 hour / 1 hour 30 mins plus. Medium to full bodied, not particularly fruity, more minerally, yet there is power and concentration and mouth watering salinity and a never ending finish. The first PYCM that I have truly loved rather than admired or respected. From Zalto Montrachet.

This bottle of 2010 Roberto Voerzio “Brunate” was generously provided by a friend who wanted to share this with me after service along with a few others from Tasting Group. Opened, splash decanted and consumed over three hours; served side-by-side with the 2010 Pecchenino “Le Coste”. The Voerzio “Brunate” was a relative hermit. Even after three hours in the decanter, it remained a bit of a wallflower while the Pecchenino was a whirling dervish on the dance floor. The classic structure of 2010 and the austerity of “Brunate” made for an impenetrable fortress, keeping the fruit under lock and key…and behind a moat and a drawbridge and stone walls with soldiers and trebuchets for that matter. Despite all of that, one does get the sense there is a deep core of high quality fruit recessed underneath the surface. It’s dark and mysterious…and simply hard to access at this moment in time. For what it’s worth, Voerzio’s holdings in “Brunate” come from the western portion of the MGA, on the La Morra side, right next to Oddero’s holdings. Frankly, this is going to need a long, long time in the cellar before it shows really well. If i had any in my cellar, I wouldn’t touch again until 2030.

Nose jumping out the glass - certainly less shy than this was a couple of year ago.
Nose brings blue plum, dark cherry, cedar and some wet stone.

On the palate good intensity of blue fruit, bramble, a little Palma violets, graphite, some leather but still very primary. Tannins are resolving with a little black tea tang on the finish. Good acidity propels into a reasonably long finish. Quite happy to give this 93

Keen to try this as heard potentially a cheaper alternative to Pepe and Valentini. 80-90 year old vines, free run juice, no malo, stainless and bottle ageing only.

Quite an amber colour in the glass (Zalto universal)

Nose has some plastic pencil case / ozone, ripe peach, a hint of white pepper.
Palate initially has lovely fruit - ripe apple and pineapple - great intensity, then on the mid-palate there is almost a crisp dry cider / Amalfi (thick pith) lemon aspect to it - tonnes of fierce acidic cut here vs the more expansive style from Valentini and Pepe.

I rather like this but certainly not a sub for the other Abruzzo greats.
  • Radders12345 commented:

9/13/22, 11:01 PM - I would wait Nick. Though given the acidity development is likely to be glacial. I did like it though, needs the rich food I think

DOC: Romagna, Italy.

N....rich red and black fruit, medium+ intensity; quite the charmer.

C....only 3 yrs old but already showing signs of age on the edge.

T.....some gamey flavours, some wet leather; has obvious tannins and a dry style - very dry! - still feels young at 3 yrs old; fruit is classy though a bit short (the Nose might have been a false hope), and there's plenty of acid too; there is some elegance but no real power; has a decent mineral profile.

VFM?....feels worth £12.00 - £15.00 retail.

BTG at 67 Pall Mall

Selected in a bid to learn more about Jura.

Generous nose of lanolin and papaya,
Palate brings yellow apples, green melon, honey and spices. Mouthfeel is rather light on its feet despite a strong intensity of flavour. That and decent acidity make this very refreshing

Ok, maybe in a dumb phase? Admittedly I don't drink a lot of French syrah, and very little from the Northern Rhone. I'm usually going to have it in a blend from the south. But this offered very little. The nose was pleasant with some berry and pepper but almost nothing came across on the palate. It was smooth because there was little tannic sensation or acidic tartness. Even after several hours in a decanter not much came through. It was getting close to dinner and still nothing. We were having heavily peppered steak with a pretty bold sauce so I put it back in the bottle and popped a Napa Cabernet. I'll give it another try tonight. I have more of this so I guess I'll wait a few more years before trying again?

Tasted over three days. (I recently tasted the 2011. The similarities in terroir are striking, although this showed marginally fuller and rounder.)

Highly effusive bouquet of fresh and stewed fruit, violets, herbs, menthol, mincemeat, spice box, pipe tobacco, used espresso grounds, worn saddle leather (with wafting hints of well lathered horses), deciduous forest sous-bois (a rarity with Brunello di Montalcino) and considerable black earth and mineral tones. Oak, while present, is relatively balanced, by BdM standards at least, and the alcohol, while less than overpowering, makes its presence known.

The wine tastes like it smells and held form over the three days. So many BdMs, especially over the last ten years or so, feature heavy extraction, at least one small oak forest, often two or three, and jolting alcohol. They often show Port-like qualities. Extraction here is commendable. It is a touch extracted, yet fruit expressions do not drown out terroir. The pipe tobacco, menthol, and sous-bois notes, in particular, create a fascinating tug and pull interplay, and enhance the wine's overall tension. Oak and alcohol, decidedly noticeable, do not drown out terroir. Acid and tannin provide impressive structure.

On the downside, the tomato-leaf and tongue-tingling acids, really go to work, particularly at the mid palate. For this reason, I cannot imagine pairing this with heavily tomato sauced fare. My preference would be beef, but herb-roasted boar might be even better. Non-spicy, smoked charcuterie would also work well. Avoid dry cheeses (especially Parmesan), unless well aged and served at room temperature. Put differently, this wine begs for fatty meats and buttery cheeses. It is made to cut through something, and fat seems to be the thing.

The stewed fruit elements here raised my brow, creating questions as to the wine's long-term cellaring potential, say, beyond 2028 or so. The alcohol too, requires taming fare, notably fat.

Though earthy, if this wine were to be compared to a barbershop quartet, 1st and 2nd tenor would stand out. Baritone would hold its own, but bass would underwhelm.

Overall, though leaning modern, an Old School Brunello, which does not lack for nuance and brings considerable brawn to the table. Not a good stand alone sipper, on account of the overtly tongue-singeing acid, and to a lesser extent, stewiness. 93-94.

Outstanding! Like a young lady entering her 20’s , the wine is reaching its prime. Firm, supple with a dash of wit. Fresh cedar, great aromatics and a nice finish. Years of advancement ahead, but if you are seeking a prime time Bordeaux— here it is!

Night two

Drier, smooth and no rough edges. The fruit is far more muted and the finish lacks the strength of last night. I miss the fresh power it showed last night….

Working my way through these but this is the first one that really sang.

Sapid sour cherry, violets, blueberry, just a hint of vanilla sweetness, a little clove spice, feels quite fresh now where before it felt a little bloated. Exactly what I want from Chianti now.

First of a case and wanted to see how open for business this is. Answer more ready than I thought it would be!

Enjoyed over several days and developed nicely over time

Nose is gorgeous - red plum, cassis, graphite, a hint of balanced vanilla sweetness, nothing much tertiary yet

Palate is wonderfully rich and intense, very concentrated - red plum, pomegranate, Parma violet, acidity is there but tannins are starting to soften and integrate wonderfully. Nicely balanced already

This is great classic claret and has miles to go, no rush to open the next one. I’m a happy man!

Colour: bright ruby

Initially a waft of brett which dies down with some air. Nose progresses to chocolate, kirsch, mineral and leather

Palate is phenomenal. Dark plum, morello cherry, cocoa, blood orange, cola and some slight savoury notes. All of this is pierced through with a delicious clean acidity and fine tannins which carries it through to a very long intense finish. Wonderful stuff.

I think this is only just starting to open up. It’s a very intense and regal wine that is starting to show its depths. I’ll leave the next bottle for a year.
