Nose: mushroom, truffle, leather, blackberry, plum, strawberry purée - a whiff of mature elegance. Palate: stewed berries, a hint of caramel, velvety tannins, finely chiseled structure, medium + acidity. Long finish. This one shows how complex and hugely enjoyable a great red Burgundy can become with a bit of age.

The other side of the Colin family... Pale yellow with a green hinge. Nose: characteristic sharp, toasty nose, hazelnut, grass. Lot of depth and substance. Palate: very nice concentration of flavours and acidity. One of my favourite St Aubin. A little gem.

By far the most remarkable Dom Perignon I have tasted. Nose is expressive and elegant - brioche, apple, candied melon. Palate: perfect balance between acidic freshness and depth. Just right - complex structure, nervous and pure. A delight for a special occasion.

A rather delicate mature Barolo. Nose is expressive from the first minute - rose petal, raspberry, red cherry, fennel (or licorice?). Palate: well integrated tannins, light-ish structure. Long finish. Works really well - nothing out of line. Drinks perfectly now.

Pale yellow. Nose is delicate: citrus fruits, fresh pineapple, saline notes, hazelnut. Palate is addictive as PYCM knows how to make it - lively acidity but in no way aggressive. Young and delicious.

Always a privilege to drink B. Mascarello’s wines. Opened and decanted 2.5 hours before serving. Clear garnet. Nose: fragrant and complex - morello cherries, blackberry, earthy notes. Palate: silky tannins, fresh acidity, juiciness, elegance and complexity. I was concerned it would be too green but it was not.

Just right! Barolo Monprivato 2009 from Giuseppe Mascarello. Beautifully balanced Barolo. Garnet colour. Meadows in springtime. Honeysuckle, wild strawberries, hay, tobacco leaves. Perfect time to drink it.

Bright garnet, with good clarity. Nose: mostly primary notes of a young Barolo - morello cherry, juicy cranberries, red currant, mint, fresh leaves. Palate: fresh acidity, silky tannins, medium-bodied, rather delicate and subtle. Still a baby but so beautiful already.

A chance encounter... Deeply saturated garnet. Nose: immediately very fragrant and expressive - a whiff of fruits - fresh mint, mountain honey, forest floor, blackberry, then leather, balsamic, licorice and dried flowers. Palate: what a structure, such a lively acidity after 21 years, lace-like tannins. Long finish. This one could still age gracefully.

A small production from Umbrian winery Bellafonte. 100% Trebbiano Spoletino. Fermented in large Slavonian oak barrels. Deep gold colour. Nose is exuberant yet well balanced, reminiscent of some dry Riesling (without the petrol notes), citrus and tropical fruits (passion fruit, mango, ripe pineapple). Palate is clean, dry and elegant. Medium + finish. Vibrant masterpiece.

What a find! Very small production (500 bottles), made in Valnerina (Southern Umbria) in one single terracotta amphora without temperature control. Blend of local grapes (Grechetto, trebbiano, malvasia, pecorino, “martone”, etc). Medium straw colour. Nose is elegant - white fruits, smoky notes. Palate is clean and dry, with mostly mineral notes. Medium + acidity, medium + finish.

Interesting contrast with the Meursault - starting with the colour : pale to medium straw. Nose shows more oak and stone. Palate is well textured and mineral. Beautiful.

Sublime Meursault 1er Cru. Medium yellow, with warm gold tones. Nose is rich with petroleum notes at first, then some melon and honey. Palate is clean yet rich (subtly rich...), not much butter in this one, mostly mineral in its character with a touch of salinity. Precise and finely structured like all of PYCM’s gems.

The vineyard of this premier cru is close to grand cru Montrachet. Medium yellow. The nose is a good preview of what will fellow - mineral and elegant. Stone, honey, with a lot of depth. Palate is also mineral and clean, with just a hint of caramel and butter. Beautifully balanced and elegant.

Medium garnet, very clear, with a brown tinge. Fragrant nose - intoxicating aromas of perfume and incense, some mineral notes too. Palate is much smoother than the 2010 - earthy notes, menthol, followed by ripe forest fruits, forest floor. Soft tannins, complex structure, medium + acidity. Long finish. Beautiful!

Bright medium yellow colour. Nose is very expressive - all sorts of yellow fruits (peach, apricot, melon), infused pineapple, all marching in an orderly and structure manner, as opposed to a chaotic explosion. Vegetal notes (eucalyptus?). Palate: the richness of the fruits is matched perfectly by a lively acidity, bringing freshness to the wine. Unlike the other wines from this producer that I have tasted, this one does not have marked buttery notes. Long finish. Beautiful!

Pale yellow, cloudy (unfiltered). Biodynamic pioneer Pepe produces a much celebrated Montepulciano d’Abruzzo and this Trebbiano. Nose is aromatic - mineral notes, yeast, citrus, cooking apple, some honey and aniseed. Palate shows a lot of complexity and depth - freshness of the limestone, citrus. Long finish.

I have often thought that a RdM from a top wine maker (Poggio di Sotto, Biondi Santi, Salvioni, etc) is much better than a BdM from an average winery. This is also true for Pian dell’ Orino. Nose shows some Brunello-like depth - leather, crisp citrus notes, evolving into perfume, red currant. Palate is round and enticing- finely chiselled tannins, juicy berries, medium + acidity. This drinks beautifully and more easily than a complex BdM.

Delightful, remarkably balanced Chambolle-Musigny. Nose: delicate with earthy notes at first, followed by black cherries. Palate: balanced - high acidity counterbalancing red fruits. Velvety medium + finish.

Quintessential Barbaresco, traditional style (i.e. use of big botti instead of smaller oak barrel), Riserva from quality cru (Montefico). Beautiful clear garnet colour. Nose: tar, rose petal, violet, aniseed. Palate: delicate and fresh - lively palate cleansing acidity (not too much!), some forest fruit in the background (when the wine gets deeper notes after about an hour). Still a baby but very enjoyable already.

Beautiful Brunello from a very small producer - Parker gave it 100/100: I had to taste it. Clear, medium garnet. Nose is mellow with a refreshing sharpness - some black cherry, menthol, and violet at first - then leather, tobacco, cocoa, perfume. Palate: vibrant acidity - a blend of lemon zest and forest fruits, perfectly integrated tannins. A beauty!

A traditional Barolo from a small producer. This wine is made from the Paiagallo plot, bordering the town of Barolo on the western side, and aged in Slavonian wood. Medium garnet with a brown tinge. Nose: menthol at first, then liquorice, then blackcurrant, iron minerality, undergrowth. Palate: the tannins are distinctive and the acidity fairly high. More forest fruit, with meaty undertones. Long finish. Very traditional in style (evocative of B. Mascarello or Rinaldi). A little gem.

Another vintage of this legendary Brunello. Medium garnet. 2007 was a hot year in Tuscany and it shows in its approachability. Nose: the intoxicating flavours of forest floor after a summer rain strikes first. Then some shiitake mushrooms in a miso soup, some truffles notes. Palate is incredibly smooth. The tannins are fully integrated but still provide enough backbone to the wine. Balsamic, bramble, raspberry, earthy notes. Medium acidity. Multilayered - effortlessly elegant. Beautiful!

Medium yellow with a greenish tinge. Nose is clean and frankly awesome - white flowers in a meadow at the start of spring, stone, saline notes. Palate is thick and oily but very balanced - a lot of minerality - pink grapefruit, apples, butter and dried apricot in very measured undertones. Fresh acidity. Long finish. Beautiful!

Disclaimer: it should have been opened 2 hours at least before tasting but was only decanted 15 minutes before the first sip). Still, a big and elegant wine. Medium ruby. Nose: earthy (forest undergrowth, mushrooms, truffles), tart black currant jam and sour cherries. Big nose. Palate: more tangy wild berries compote. Tightly knitted tannins. The wine opened up progressively over 2 or 3 hours but remained a little be tight (still young?). Great elegance and power though. A great wine.

Pale lemony-gold yellow. Nose: very faint at first - citrus fruit and lot of freshly cut pineapple, then opening up to candied pineapple and ginger biscuits but always delicate and restrained. Palate: very clean (nearly sharp at first - a bit surprising for a P-M) with acidity cutting through nearly, then showing more layers of complexity - minerality and hints of citrus. Medium + finish. Very elegant wine offering a great balance (not at all the buttery Chardonnay type). Gorgeous.

That is Barolo heaven. Decanted for 2 hours before serving. Colour: brownish garnet. Nose: out of this world - lively, voluptuous and perfumed, saturation of flavour - nettles, rose petal, black currant, tar. Palate: mature tannins, mouth drying but rounded. Long finish. 2003 was a difficult year in Piedmont but this bottle has not reached its peak. Quite an experience.

My last bottle of the 2011 vintage. Pale copper-pink colour. Fine bubble. Very “wine-y” nose, very Nebbiolo. Spice, dried fruit, violet. Palate: dry minerality, freshly baked rolls, followed by dried cranberry and bramble. Medium + finish. A truly remarkable Spumante, which combines the character of the Nebbiolo from Monforte d’Alba and the light elegance of a champagne.

Deep garnet. Nose is well developed - mostly dried violet, meadow flowers, bramble, then some tar. Palate is very elegant and balanced. Delicately woven tannins, iron-rich minerality in the background. Medium acidity, medium + finish. A stunning Barolo. It drinks really well already and can certainly keep for another 5 to 10 years.
