Drank from a magnum at Born and Raised at the end of the first day of the Ride to Conquer Cancer. This wine did everything right on this night. Dark deep purplish red colour; still gives a youthful impression. Nose of complex forest floor, dark red cherries and savoury notes. Palate is light in texture, yet intense in flavour, balanced with fine ripe tannins. And the finish is smooth and long. It does not get much better for Brunello.

Cork was impossible to remove. Had to double strain and decanted for about 2 hours. Beautiful dark red colour. No evidence of the 24 years of age. Delicious dark red fruit with touch of tapenade and earthy notes. Intense. Long finish with ripe tannins still notable. Youngster.

I am a fan of this Estate. Beautiful dark red violet color – hardly any sign of age. Dark red fruit nose with touch of cedar and mineral notes; silky structure with long finish. Some tannins still notable, but ripe and very fine. Very much ready to drink.

Cork was impossible to remove. Had to strain. Nose was at first dominated by a green note over the dark red fruit to a point of opening up and consuming a backup bottle (Montelena Estate 1996). But guess what, it completely cleaned up in couple of hours and delicious dark red fruit with lot of earthy complexity showed well. Beautiful dark red colour with no evidence of age. Lots of structure and balance. Long finish. This wine still has decades ahead.

Light colour; forward nose of apple and lemon with limestone notes. Palate is not heavy or viscous but elegant and complex; balanced and long finish. Drinking beautifully now.

Mid red with slight brick around the rim. Little shy at first but then opened up with raspberry and red cherry notes and herb notes to add complexity. Lush on the palate with very fine dusty tannins. Fruit still drives this wine but there is enough herb and earth flavours to make it very interesting. Very balanced on the finish at first but it did start to fade after about 1.5 hours. Time to drink up. Very very enjoyable now.

Dinner at Scaramouche. Very light yellow. Pure citrus fruit with white flowers and mineral notes. Very restrained at the moment. Started to open in about an hour but it was too late - the last few sips were the best. Focused pure. Nowhere near ready to drink. Try in three years .

Dinner at Scaramouche. Deep red colour, almost opaque. Dark red cherry, raspberry and earthy notes. On palate the fruit is pure and sweet with good middle palate. Very fine ripe tannin just make an appearance at the back end of a moderate finish. The purity of the fruit comes through again on the finish. Ready to drink - will not get any better; it does not need to.

Again, drank much better than I expected. Mid red colour with lots of depth, almost opaque, just like the previous bottle. Subdued red fruit on the nose with hints of barn yard and earthy notes. The palate is rich with no notable tannins. The richness leads to a decent finish. Very enjoyable now.

Pale yellow, lighter than expected for moderately aged CC. Fruit driven nose with peach and green apple and supported by mineral notes. Palate is focused with no excesses but still rich enough to satisfy and deliver a long finish. Very elegant Corton-Charlemagne. Drinks well now.

Wine of the night? Tasted among eight decent reds (Montelena Estate Cab 1987, Rayas 1998, Togni 1999 etc) and it was competing for the top spot. Opened for an hour before tasting. Still dark intense, opaque red; no sign of the 25 years. Forward and intense nose; dark red and blue fruit and tapenade. The palate is balanced, the tannins are ripe and still detectable. Finish is very long. Not sure that it will get any better, but this one is not dying yet. California made some great wines in the 1990s.

One of my old time favoured producers and not disappointed. Lived up to expectations. Bright dark red colour; still looking youthful. Violets, dark red fruit, black olives on the nose. Palate is balanced, still some tannins left but the fruit contains them well. Ready to drink now but no need to rush.

Of all six bottles drank over the last year only one was near drinkable (second last), but not clean and suitable for rating. The rest were oxidized. ZINK23 describes what I experienced well. Not rated.

A part of what I think has been the second greatest trio of related wines I ever tasted together; the 1991 La Landonne, La Mouline and the La Turque. Part of our dinner series with Heinz. Decanted for about 3 hours. Dark red and black fruit with pepper and meat notes, so classic. Mouth coating extract and long. Ready now.

A part of what I think has been the second greatest trio of related horizontal wines I ever tasted together; the 1991 La Landonne, La Mouline and the La Turque. Part of our dinner series with Heinz. Decanted for about 3 hours. Unfortunately slightly corked so no notes on the nose. Palate very refined, no notable tannins and long peppery finish.

Dark deep blue red. Dark blue and red fruit with some forest floor green notes dominate the nose. Palate is focused but little too narrow; some mineral notes but overall lighter than the nose and colour imply. Moderate finish. Not sure if this one is getting any better.

A part of what I think has been the greatest trio of related wines I ever tasted together; the 1997 Sorì San Lorenzo, Costa Russi and the Sorì Tildìn. Part of our dinner series with Heinz. Opened and decanted for about 3 hours. Despite the already 18 years of aging, this wine was a youngster in every way. Classic tar and roses with prunes notes. Tannins still notable on the palate but well integrated with the fruit. Long. Lots of potential here.

From a magnum. Bright deep red, opaque. Decanted and drank over about 1.5 hours. Raspberry and dark red cherry nose with tea, herbs and mineral complexity; the nose kept evolving right up to the end becoming more complex and savory. Intense palate with notable tannins, ripe. Very balanced and heading for a long life. Already enjoyable and drinkable but best years are ahead. Try again in five years (94)

Bright light yellow; much more intense than most Gruners I've tasted. Passion fruit and mango nose with mineral notes. Touch of fruit sweetness on the palate but not out of balance, intense flavour leading to a moderately long finish. Drinks well now and I have no idea how this will age.

Balanced palate with with the overall flavour intensity and acidity playing nicely together. Tannins resoled. Little more advanced than expected. Drink now.

Medium red. Red fruit aromas with slight dark fruit note and a touch of forest floor. Very balance with soft ripe tannins, almost resolved, moderate acidity. Very much a middle of the road wine, good on it own or as food wine. time to drink up. (90)

Still a youngster. Dark red cherry and prune notes with savoury notes. Tannins notable on the palate but well supported by fruit intensity. The nose keep coming back to support the palate with just a touch of secondary flavour notes. Leads to a moderately long and balanced finish.

Gruner is such an unusual flavour and this one falls right into that category. Citrus with vegetable notes but it works with the mineral undertone. Palate is balanced. Worked well with the Chicken Paprika.

From the first note the wine showed it sophistication and elegance. Wild cherry and black current fruit with mineral notes and lifted by flower notes; a classic Barolo rose note makes an appearance. How bizarre for Brunello. The palate is structured with tannins still there but dusty and fine and enveloped in fruit. Finish is long, literally minutes long, and balanced. And this is still a youngster. No hint on secondary notes. Stunning!

I was a fan of this wine for a while and then it just slipped on my radar. I may need to reconsider after having this one. A very sensual 24 year old. Red cherry compote less the sweetness with milk chocolate and mineral backbone. Very fine, almost dusty tannins hanging on to a moderately long finish.(92)

Drank at our pre-Chilean travels dinner. You have to like old wines, and I do, to enjoy this one. Light red, semi-translucent, strawberry and plum with earthy notes. The palate is flavourful and balanced, sweetness of the fruit is well balanced by surprising acidity that leads to a decent finish. Overall a very pleasant surprise after 28 years.

Got to enjoy this one with the winemaker during his recent visit to Toronto. Sweet red fruit, somewhere between strawberry and wild red cherry with earthy mineral notes and just a touch or leather. The palate is elegant and persistent with an interesting creamy note. Don’t take this one to a heavy weight fight but you’ll be well entertained with its elegance and charm. Drinks well now and has many years ahead. Enjoyed two bottles - very consistent.
