This one has really pulled itself together since my first bottle in 2014. Ripe red cherry, leather and just a touch of barnyard. The palate is balaced with sweet fruit and good acidity, mid-palate is notable and finish long.

Dinner at Scaramouch. Does it get better for 1er Cru? If it does I have not had it. Perfectly balanced dark fruit, almost floral and earthy at the same time. Seamless palate with long finish. Time to drink up.

Drank from 375 ml bottle. Drank over two days and it kept improving. Classic Barolo nose, quite expressive. Sharp tannins at first but rounded out nicely. Sour cherry fruit with leather complexity. Drinkable now but will get better.

Dinner at Rocky Crest Golf Resort. See my notes of 2019-05-27. Just could not resist trying it again. This one seemed little more ready to drink but will benefit from more age.

Dark, deep garnet colour and quite opaque. Not at all shy, just oozes from the glass and fills the room. Black cherries and berries, herbal, minerals and dark floral notes. The palate reflects the nose notes with very fine tannins and incredible balance. Very long finish. Very approachable now.

Still a great wine! Starting to show some age on the brim. Dark red fruit, raspberry and cranberry. Focused on the palate. Just past the fruit stage with some secondary flavours showing up. Beautiful now but no need to rush.

My first bottle of Las Beatas and will not be the last. Unlike any other Rioja I ever tasted. Bright, dark violet colour. Blackberry and raspberry fruit, herbal and mineral notes. Touch of oak noted but not distracting. Palate is silky, akin to aged Burgundy, balanced, structured and persistent. Not sure where the tannins are hiding. They must be really fine.

Light brilliant gold colour. Complex nose starts out with of yellow plum but goes on to orange and almost mango nose. Palate carries the fruit notes and adds nutty flavour. Great acidity to balance the fruit. Luscious. Long and balanced finish. Drinking well now but no need to rush. Judging by the 1987 drank by its side this has few years left.

Colour still quite bright deep red suggesting relative youth. The nose star tout subdued and shy. Dark fruit and mineral notes and even a touch stale at first. The palate show mid red fruit with mineral note and touch of oak. Within an hour this cleans up to a brilliant sweet dark red fruit with mineral notes, balanced by great acidity and goes onto a clean precise and long finish. Ready to drink now but decant for an hour.

This wine just does not disappoint. Dark red fruit and mineral nose. The very fine tannins and intensity of flavours make this wine very enjoyable right now, but still has many years to go. This was a particularly fine bottle.

Dark garnet not acknowledging the 20 years. Dark red fruit with smoky notes and touch of balsamic and meat; notes more consistent with 10 year old 1er than 20 years old. Very interesting nose. The palate start out aggressively with bright fruit and meaty notes but finishes with harsh acidic note. Until that acidic note the wine was performing much beyond its pedigree, but the finish was not enjoyable.

Deep yellow. Lemon and lime notes with subtle ginger notes in the background. Oak still notable but well integrated and not offensive. Palate is intense and almost viscous. Searing acidity balances palate. Long finish. Little overdone but pulling itself together. Drink now but no need to rush. It may still improve.

Drank from a magnum. Very dark garnet. Slow to open up. Decanted for about 2 hours. Interesting mix dark red fruit, plums and strawberries with mineral notes. Palate is balanced, with black fruit up front and supported by ripe soft tannins and coffee and chocolate flavours. Long finish with mineral notes.

Little shy when first opened but became e much more approachable as it warmed up. Notes on asparagus, grass, almonds with touch of slate. Palate is rich with nutty notes and a touch of mineral austerity to balance the sweetness. Very enjoyable now but I expect it will go for a while.

Very dark red. The wine is very forward with dark bright red and blue fruits, blackberries and black currant and just a touch of black olives. The intensity of the fruit and other flavours balances the tannins on the palate but the alcohol is notable. Moderate finish.

Drank at Born and Raised at the end of the first day of the Enbridge Ride to Conquer Cancer. See my notes of 2019 04 01. This was a 750 bottle; not as balanced as the magnum, but otherwise the same.

Drank at Born and Raised at the end of the first day of the Enbridge Ride to Conquer Cancer. This wine take me to the slightly wilder side of St. Julien. Deep dark colour suggest some age but not maturity. The nose freely gives up dark red fruit but then adds darker side, prunes, black olives and earthy notes. The palate shows a great balance between the dark fruit and acidity. Drinking beautifully now but no need to rush.

Drank at Born and Raised at the end of the first day of the Enbridge Ride to Conquer Cancer. Colour is light suggesting maturity. Classic Barolo nose of rose and tar with tobacco. Palate is light on its feet yet flavourful and balanced, good mid-palate. Dusty tannins still hang around but are not distracting at all. Time to drink up.

Colour shows full maturity. Very much a Musar nose with funky wild nose of leather, red fruit and strong barnyard note. The palate shows a lots of complexity with roasted meat and red fruit dominating. Slightly disjointed moderate finish. This bottle was likely past its prime.

Drank from a magnum. Matched with delicious braised short ribs. One of the most satisfying wines I had in a long time. Colour is exactly where you think it should be showing maturity and slightly opaque. Nose of wild strawberries, straw, leather with herbs to add complexity. The palate is seamless, balanced with no hint of tannins yet the wine does not fall apart at all; just coats the mouth and leads to a long lasting finish. And long after I put my glass down I realized that I could still taste it on the back of my palate. So satisfying.

Part of 2005 Burgundy tasting. Seventh and final in the lineup. Deep dark garnet. Wine of the Les Amis d’Ontario. Earthy nose with blackberry, boysenberry and plum. The palate delivers ripe fruit but avoids being overripe. There is also mineral note, decent acidity and ripe tannins that help carry the wine to a long finish. The wine kept improving in the glass throughout the night. Many years, maybe decades, ahead.

Part of 2005 Burgundy tasting. Fifth in the lineup. Mid red colour. Red and dark red fruit and earthy notes. Complex palate with red fruit dominating. Fine, yet still notable tannins. Fruit balanced nicely by acidity. Moderately long. Kept improving as the night went on. Good future ahead of it.

Part of 2005 Burgundy tasting. Fourth in the lineup. Somewhat disappointing showing for this wine. Dark ruby red. Dark red fruit and earthy and leathery nose. Started out intense with coarse tannins on the palate and went down from there. Disjointed and appeared to fall apart even more as the evening went on. Decently long finish but not balanced. Bottle variations? Awkward time for the wine? Who knows? I think the wine will pull together and will deserve much higher rating in few years.

Part of 2005 Burgundy tasting. Second in the lineup. I agree with Beachbum’s rating. Red fruit and earthy and mineral notes; all very subdued but definitely there. Delivers big flavour on the palate, all subtle but long, balanced and persistent. Just kept opening up as the evening went on.

Drank from a magnum at Born and Raised at the end of the first day of the Ride to Conquer Cancer. This wine did everything right on this night. Dark deep purplish red colour; still gives a youthful impression. Nose of complex forest floor, dark red cherries and savoury notes. Palate is light in texture, yet intense in flavour, balanced with fine ripe tannins. And the finish is smooth and long. It does not get much better for Brunello.
