US and Burgundy Pinot Noir head to head: 2016 La Neblina from Radio-Coteau versus 2016 Les Perrières 1er Cru from Domaine Chevillon (NsG)

Two highly regarded producers, with the Frenchman costing some 50% more than the American.

Served semi-blind, meaning that we knew which wines we were having, but not in which glass they were served. 3/4 of the company were regular wine lovers, and not nearly as nerdy as me😊

The difference between the two was striking, and spotted by everyone. On the nose, La Neblina offered rich and ripe red fruit, generous and open armed, while Les Perrières was more restrained and precise. Where the Neblina fruit was sunny, Perrières was earthy.

It was the same with the palate. La Neblina again generous and charming versus Les Perrières tighter and more distinguished appearance - if that makes any sense. Good acidity in both of them, so Neblina did not go overboard, but again Perrières was more precise and tight.

There’s no doubt in my mind that the Perrières is a higher quality wine, but what you actually prefer to drink is a matter of taste preferences. And price, of course. I’m happy to have both

Enjoyed a magnum March 2, 3, and 4, for our Forty-Fifth Wedding Anniversary, cork was completely saturated and split into two pieces while opening, bright beet red coloration in the glass, an auction magnum bought sixteen years ago for $60, same notes all three nights which suggests this wine could easily last another five years if properly stored, nose of red and black cherry fruit, hints of minerals, forest floor and barnyard, same on the palate, medium/big body, tasty, old style Cabernet Sauvignon fruit, elegant tasting, mouth filling fruit, easy to sip and savor and reflect upon, and a long, flavorful finish and aftertaste. Uploaded a bottle picture.

Decanted at the Toronto restaurant. $185cdn plus 13% tax plus 18% tip comes to about $250 or $50 per glass. Although this is a very good, young, sophisticated Beaujo, ordering beer is a better option.

3/13/23, 8:16 PM - Not sure if you can import easily but KLwines.com in SF Ca has it for <$30 usd, it’s very good at that price point.

I need to come up with a strategy to keep my hands off these. Really delicious now but I'm sure they'll get better with some more bottle age.

1/27/23, 7:06 PM - I've found a few places with 375ml half bottles to sate me until the big bottles are ready. Nice to have a taste now and then while leaving some to rest a few years :)

Lemon skin. Crayons. River rock. Metallic backbone. Decent enough

Bitter, bitter, bitter, ended up dumping it down the sink

Really want to like it so I can buy some 1.5L and 3L local retailer has on fire sale prices...

At PnP reminds me of the '90s toasted marshmallow Merlot fad. Boozey, weak finish. Barest hint of tangy fruit hiding under all that damn diacetyl. Whiff of sulfur at finish?

Buttery popcorn mostly gone day two but so is everything else except some heat and some pepper.

"70-79 C Below/Average" but allowing some people like wine that tastes of margarine. 84, I guess.

Quite good but not great for the price ($38 ca). Pleasant red fruit, smooth, medium finish. Look forward to my second bottle, but will be waiting for the price to come down before I buy a third.

Nothing exceptional here as we broke out the magnum for our second wine of the night with Stone Crabs & lobster. Nearly black in color lots of lighter fruits, figs, cherries, with no big finish. Slightly tannic on the end. OK but better value out there.

Spritzig, thin body, bright and tangy carbonic-like fruit. HUGE but sweet animal. Decanted for 1 1/2 but could have used another few hours to dissipate bandaid-y brett notes and 2ndary ferment carbonation. Opened considerably over a few hours. Probably would have been delicious day 2 but with quick decant at a restaurant it was lacking. Tangy, thin, very sweet (not sugary) barnyard fruit.

5/22/21, 12:47 PM - I brought it in for a dinner with a bunch of restaurant people so wasn't much to be done but enjoy it for the state it was in. It was good but not the 94 pointer I had envisioned :)

Full, round nose of dark bramble, redwood sous bois, lightly smoked game. Mouth is nice, lush. And then the finish just falls off a cliff. Just, disappears almost completely except an imperceptibly slight stale malo (?) and maybe a hint of sulfur. Perhaps a poorly stored bottle? Never experienced similar. Bought three bottles, almost bought a few cases based on RP 95 points. Glad I didn't. Wife likes it so maybe its a flaw in my head :)
Maybe a weird dumb phase? Will report back on bottles 2 and 3.
If this bottle is an outlier then it might be a stellar deal...

2/15/19, 5:55 PM - Edit: I must note I used a coravin and sampled over 3 separate tastings, each about 2 weeks apart, final taste PnP. Consistent profile, inc. flaw, throughout. Will just PnP whole bottle next time around but doubt coravin had an effect.
