1/10/24, 12:16 PM - I use Grassl Cru for just about everything. Contrary to what you say here, these often unwind and settle down with a couple years in bottle. They typically add richness to the mid palate that is hiding early on. Young the fruit on a lot of Sandlands can trend toward stern crunchy red fruit and a certain sameness. Two years later they reveal their individuality and depth.
11/23/23, 6:58 AM - We’re these bought from K&L when they were closing them out? I have noticed at least half the bottles from them have been oxidized whereas almost 0% of winery direct bottles out of dozens drunk
7/14/23, 3:31 AM - I had 3 of these and this was definitely the best bottle. Same elements but in a great place! Go ahead and drink one… this was had the same night as F Esmonin LSJ 2005 and a Des Croix 2015, both beauties, and outshined both.
4/6/23, 3:37 AM - I consistently find that these do better with a fair amount of air… I actually found this one to be less expressive aromatically and a bit more tart fruited than my last few. In general I think these 2018s are singing
2/16/23, 7:06 AM - recently figured out that gravains is either my favorite or second favorite from pavelot and one of the highest value and consistency wines in the last couple years
12/19/22, 6:02 PM - My favorite of the whites by a good bit when I visited early this year. Definitely got my attention
10/17/22, 9:22 PM - Wonder what is coming off as hot to your nose. This is a pretty low alcohol wine… is it the pepper notes?
9/1/22, 4:20 AM - Just had another of these and would say that while the acid is there, the richness more than balances it. We decanted briefly and followed over a few hours. Killer with air and as it reached cellar temp!
10/23/21, 4:26 PM - I will take the rest off of you since you find them so terrible!
8/25/22, 4:33 PM - Seriously sell me the rest of your case please!
8/26/22, 5:26 PM - Got a brother in Tacoma who comes out every so often. Seems like a win win!
5/8/22, 5:25 PM - FWIW, I have found that in most years (2011 is the exception) these wines are quite shut down from a few years after vintage until 10 years or so. Had the last of 09/10 last year and they were singing after a couple hours of air.
3/24/22, 9:38 AM - To that point, the 2018 showed tart and one note earlier and then was really enjoyable a couple years after release. Major improvement
3/21/22, 10:05 AM - This was opened in the morning. Poured a half glass and checked in throughout the day. Actually started tasting about 5pm, followed till about 10p along with the 99 Volnay. Totally different wines but both improved a lot by evening. This wine had absolutely no concerns about a long life ahead whereas the Volnay seemed to potentially be heading toward tired.
3/21/22, 4:46 PM - Pretty interesting on the RM stylistically speaking. The 2012 village Volnay was mineral and elegant and almost tart, whereas both 1999/2011 Taillepieds had similar impressions
3/10/22, 8:10 PM - Mine have all retained a nice core of red fruit, but I have had a few of the older qupe syrahs show some Brett lately. Not offensive, but present.
2/22/22, 12:39 PM - Very good on short decant. Definitely struck me as more modern and ripe, but a complete wine for sure!
2/5/22, 4:41 AM - Interesting note as I forgot drew bottled Fashauer. You have to try Witching Stick Fashauer Pinot! This is their estate vineyard and the 2016 we had last summer amongst many very good wines was a standout for its purity/mineral streak on a raspberry frame.
2/3/22, 2:28 PM - Unfortunately I have had a lot of bottle variation with these, made all the more obvious by drinking a few bottles of the same vintage where one or more seems to lack acid and the others are crazy bright and full of life
9/25/21, 3:50 AM - Have you tried standing the bottle up well in advance and decanting it really gently to avoid all of the fine sediments? I’ve found it makes all of the difference from what you point out here to a richer and complete wine
1/3/22, 6:49 AM - Man too bad. I have had consistent success with that method of preparation on these wines. I am out of the Sonoma coast now since I had the last 3 within a couple weeks of your note to reassure myself. Never noted anything green except maybe the greener side of olive. The Nellesen bottling definitely showed very lean and thin when the sediments hadn’t been settled out. Hopefully your luck turns with the last six (and hopefully you got them at the same bargain pricing as I did)!
2/2/22, 8:27 AM - That’s unfortunate. Definitely more of a contemplative wine than a blockbuster to me and lacks the stuffing of some of my personal favorites. Guess we are all allowed to have our individual opinions on what a good Syrah should be!
1/8/22, 5:13 PM - This particular one for me was also too glossy and ripe for me. I have liked most of the others and do find the Chardonnay the most interesting of all
12/28/21, 3:28 PM - Find it interesting that you like these wines. Most of the stuff you drink and like is in my general realm of preference but whenever I have tried these wines I find them absolutely over the top in all aspects and do not enjoy them at all. By no means a critique, and perhaps you have transcended the barrier between the camps to like both style directions!
1/3/22, 6:51 AM - Thanks for the follow up note. I try to keep an open mind, but really never got into this style from the beginning. It helped that I had no money! Always appreciate your notes so keep them coming.
12/27/21, 3:02 PM - A decent introduction to muscadet. Do yourself a favor and seek out some Pepiere Briords!
10/10/21, 9:41 AM - Yeah man. I started only opening these when I knew it would be open for several days. They are really nice initially but just keep adding more to enjoy with additional air.
9/7/21, 3:38 AM - Care to elaborate?
7/11/21, 7:40 AM - This to me is either in a shut down phase or was/will never be as interesting as other vintages. We have had 07/09/11/12/13 over the last year or so and the 09 was my least favorite. 07 from magnum was superb and 11/13 from 750s seemed very promising. The 12 was delicious but seemed a little fatter and will hopefully benefit from a long slumber.
7/11/21, 7:31 AM - Browsing your notes for all drew Pinots, it seems that you think a consistent house style is the overriding note on all of these. I was not of that mind for wines in 2011, but the last few years have me right where you are. Very good wines and quite enjoyable, but strike me more as a Drew Pinot than an “xyz vineyard” Pinot. Glad to see someone else who is drinking and posting notes for AV stuff. Don’t see Phillips Hill or Witching Stick or Baxter notes from you... have you tasted much of theirs?
6/21/21, 9:52 AM - More like classic central coast or classic sta Rita hills!
6/22/21, 6:30 AM - Yeah I figured was just messing with you. I think of these as SRH 2.0 — tried the extended hang time and super ripe in the past, but are finding a lot more balance now... Sandhi, Chanin, Tyler, domaine de la Cote. Lots of depth and concentration without overt rupeness
4/22/21, 4:14 PM - These get much much better with age. Some NV magnums from 1989-92 a few years ago were absolutely awesome, and the L'ermitage has more structure than those. They are also lovely young, but bury one for a while and check it out in 10-20yrs!
4/1/21, 5:37 AM - Chenin and Semillon (2:1) according to the site. Glad I picked up some extra!
3/29/21, 3:22 AM - starting to drink pretty open and full -- bit of a green streak on the palate but otherwise everything seems pretty integrated
3/3/21, 4:24 PM - I mostly agree... as things generally move toward warmer, these RRV Zins have been excellent in threading the ripeness needle. Plenty of weight and intrigue while retaining reasonable sugars/alcohol.
2/20/21, 6:19 AM - acetic acid? vinegar? that would seem like an issue
2/20/21, 4:40 PM - Point taken on Huet -- your depth exceeds mine by a factor of at least 10! Not surprising about the DC and Burgundy thing -- seems to be the thing in NYC too (if you aren't so hip that you're above it). But although I am intrigued by the stuff, I don't get to drink it much. Definitely a lot of pinot in my life!
2/18/21, 5:46 AM - Blasphemy! I’ve had one of these queued up for a few weeks, so will have to see whether we agree!
2/13/21, 8:38 AM - This pretty much nails what I get every time I taste oppenlander. I call is wild strawberry but the idea is the same!
2/13/21, 8:50 AM - This pretty much nails what I get every time I taste oppenlander. I call is wild strawberry but the idea is the same!
2/10/21, 5:05 AM - At such odds with all of the notes from old vine Carignan wines that I have tasted. Most have been quite full and deep, moderately complex, and above all enjoyable at a minimum. I’d gladly take any of these wines off your hands!
1/12/21, 4:46 PM - Can't imagine that same vineyard cranking out something with alcohol under 13... the estate stuff from Limerick Lane is super balanced to me, but that is a warm area with a lot of sun. Most of the well made stuff I have seen from there is marked with high 14s alcohol, so I can imagine that this must have been picked crazy early and/or deliberately included unripe fruit. That would seem odd for this producer too, even if he is known for 'leaner' wines from Napa??
1/9/21, 10:41 AM - been considering picking a couple of these up -- good to see this review
10/9/20, 1:27 PM - Glad to help! If you have any 2016 I found it drinking very well earlier this year, and the 18 was somewhere in between. Tighter than the 16 but showing more open than the 17. Can’t comment on the 15 or earlier right now...
8/23/20, 11:08 AM - I’d think you’re onto something with a bad bottle. I’ve had a handful of these and your positive points resonate but not any of the negatives. Most recently opened one amongst a dozen bottles with a group of 8 people in March and it was just about everyone’s favorite of the night. Hopefully your next bottle is more like that!
8/4/20, 6:40 AM - Exactly my thoughts on the 2018! Posted on WB but not here.
5/2/20, 6:22 PM - Same feelings on this 2017 being the best one I’ve had. The 2014 Amador chenin was in a similar space, but the 17 was superb.
4/21/20, 4:33 AM - What sort of flaw?
4/7/20, 11:08 AM - What makes you say end of its life? Fading or tired fruit? Signs of oxidizing? Your note seems to say it’s still fresh.
3/29/20, 3:39 PM - Try with basic risotto— did that with asparagus and it paired well with the richness of the dish
3/18/20, 4:10 AM - A couple years back we were offered some magnums of NV that had been stored at the winery since 89,90,91,92... they were all wonderful in 2017/18. Far longer lived than most would assume!
3/17/20, 3:24 PM - Looking forward to it. Did a focused tasting in Paso with all kinds of great new and older zins, ps, and a lot of other stuff. Ended up really digging the Cinsault— great to have a different version of the same grapes and winemaker for comparison
2/27/20, 2:08 PM - Was this at the tasting room? Good to see this showing well as I like the Dogtown usually!
1/28/20, 4:09 AM - This is the only year I’ve compared those two PS wines and he Pesenti does show all of its charm relatively early on (thought it was superb last fall. I like the library now too, but having had some with a lot more age on them... they just become pretty phenomenal. Rattlesnake PS also gives up the goods more quickly in my experience, and Hayne takes a lifetime.
12/24/19, 4:50 PM - Tried this producer over the summer, but it was the 2011 vertus and it was phenomenal amongst a group of 4 tasted blind. Glad to see your notes on the more “basic” wine.
12/1/19, 1:43 PM - Love the creosote mention on this one! One of my favorite things that I get in petite sirah. Not quite sure why, but I like it.
11/27/19, 4:48 AM - Yesssss! There’s usually comes off a bit off-dry to me. Did you get any RS on it?
11/25/19, 7:17 AM - Frappato can be pretty cool -- not sure if they make it out west but imported here are the great wines of Paolo Cali. Great guy and fun wines, lots of different blends of frapatto and nero, all super pure and minerally. I think you would dig them.
Thanks for letting us know about this problem. We will review your comments and be in touch soon with an update.
