Pretty robust mouthfeel, but has a nice acidic flare on the front that fades nicely into the background. Watermelon, strawberry and pomegranate and a little bit of melon in the middle fading to the rear. Mouthfeel was a little more robust than the palate. I can definitely say that I think this is certainly worth the QPR. I've paid twice as much for a wine that delivers 50% of what this one delivers.

10/13/23, 6:52 PM - doesnt that just make the other wine overpriced? roses are usually 15 to 25. maybe 30 to 35 for premium and 7 to 10 on the lower spectrum.

10/13/23, 8:36 PM - thanks for your thought out response. much appreciated. you clearly have experience tasting a wider variety, at higher price points then i was aware even existed for rose. i wish the cellar tracker gave the ability to delete the original comment.

your note was an excellent one. as you personally requested, i will not ever comment again on your tasting notes. apologies for the original comment in the first place. no offense was intended.

only stumbled on this one due to the excellent note you wrote on the aubert park ave. was trying to decide on a wine to take to a birthday dinner. thanks for tn.

2020 Merry Edwards Pinot Noir Meredith Estate Russian River Valley
Danni thought it was gorgeous and just loved it. Its big and oaky and shows it. Young now, to hold.

9/2/23, 7:25 PM - will this wine benefit from aging? your short note was telling. i felt the same with the 2018. well made wine for the style it represented. not sure if it will gained any complexity in aging with the oak, vanilla, choco notes.

I'm going to have to respectfully disagree with the nearly every review that rates this wine at 94++ points. This is too big for a Pinot, and seems more like a Pinot version of a high-end Napa Cabernet than a varietally true Pinot Noir. At 15.2% abv and over-the-top ripeness, to me it's closer to cough syrup than a Pinot I want to drink and savor. Poured it for several friends who are more Oregon Pinot drinkers, and only one of them seemed to enjoy it. Still well made, but just not for me. Too much of what is normally a good thing.

11/24/22, 4:09 PM - Definitely dont think this was so big. Its definitely in the 90s and very well made. A bit big in that it was a little higher in acidity. But very sonoma coast in nature. Felt surprised that it was this good.

Just picked up a couple more bottles of both this and the '18, and this is as good today as it was when I tried it last year. Chardonnay in a crisp, minerally style, so if you are seeking buttery notes, this is probably not for you. At least IMO, and although I'm not doing it today, these are fun to try side-by-side with the Durant made by Marcus Goodfellow.

7/25/21, 5:30 AM - I tried the 2018 gf durant Chardonnay. How does the gf and Pgc Durant chards compare for 2018. Purchaser of both. Trying to see if i should try and pick up some Pgc for Durant too. If you happen to know the differences blocks/vilification can you share that too?

7/25/21, 1:01 PM - Thanks Bob for the reply. I am thinking of getting each of their 18’s, now i know to get the 19 too for Jim’s. Thanks again. It’s hard to find tasters who go across the producers. Really appreciate the help in understanding. I don’t usually like chard’s; recently had the goodfellow and then was tracking down the vineyard for other chard’s and perhaps I’ll try the Pinot’s too. (I really like the Jim’s Pinots so it’s good to know to the chards are good to try as well.).

Either corked or not a good wine. Finish of sour fruit, wet cardboard, and musty basement. Will try another bottle in a few months and report back.
  • Darjeeling commented:

1/24/21, 12:43 PM - Sounds like it was TCA or tainted. Given the volume, it could happen.

This is the 2nd bottle I've had and both were just not good. This was so sour it just was undrinkable. I am confused by what was described and what I experienced. This was sour, bitter and flat. Not one fruit note or taste. This one was a real disappointment.
  • Darjeeling commented:

1/24/21, 12:42 PM - Aka bottle variation. Based on the notes across the brand seems a frequent occurrence since the underlying wineries are different and sold their overstock. (Could try keeping it open a couple days and also decanting just to make sure)

2018 Sandlands Cinsault Lodi
10/26/2020 - KPB Does not like this wine:

I love Cinsault but this particular wine didn’t work for me. It has a faintly spicy character, but simply seems dilute and dull, like a pinot noir mixed half and half with water. I’m sorry to say this, because I love the Sandlands style, but for me this wine is not recommended.
  • Darjeeling commented:

1/13/21, 3:39 PM - I got a bottle at retail like the one you described. My bottle that was from the winery was much better amazingly so that I bought 2 more at retail. Seems like it's providence or bottle variation.

  • Darjeeling commented:

1/23/21, 7:26 PM - My bottle got better after day 2 in the fridge.

Deep dark brooding black and blue fruits. Not high acid, it does have some low notes. Not much tannins, very smooth reminded me of cab or cru beaujolis. End palate lingers. Seems high abv even though it’s probably low. At 13.7% felt over 14.

(6/29/2020) Keeps a long time in the fridge (weeks) and doesn't get oxidized much -so I am enjoying this. And I poured into a small bottle with screw cap to story. Liking the opportunity to retaste and seeing that it does keep without having to use a coravin++

Much better at 6/19. Keep in mind this need time to get air. Decanted 1.5x and was better. Probably 92 93
  • Darjeeling commented:

10/5/20, 7:27 PM - Yes, it was the same bottle as noted without coravin. I moved to smaller bottles with screw tops to preserve. I use glass water bottles generally and a pretty cold efficient fridge.

The wine looks yellow gold colored. The legs are slow. There is no sediment in the bottle. It smells like raisin, apricot and sherry. It tastes like hazelnut, mineral and fig. The body is medium. The wine has round texture. The wine finishes medium. The wine has high acidity. The nose fools the palate, it smells of big promises that doesnt completely gets fullfilled. Not a wery interesting champagne other than the use of grapes.

Had 3 glasses at a party on a warm evening in Orinda. PnP. Muted nose dominated by lemon curd. Golden colored, medium-bodied, light to medium legs. Strong lemon notes with tart green apples, lees and a slight taste of almond. Moderate oak and creaminess, but the tartness of the fruit and medium to strong acidity balance well. A bit of an overall saline tang. Certainly more CA than French, but not a butter-oak bomb, and on a warm evening, has a nice refreshing quality. Not at all unreasonable at the listed prices in the mid $30s, but I'm not sure it's the holy grail in my search for something in between the totally quaffable and reasonable Acacia Carneros at about $10 and the amazing but dear single vineyard Auberts, Peter Michaels and Kistlers at about $100. I just bought an auction lot of Faillas in the low to mid $20s and a Devolet, Eden Rift and 2 Caminos in the mid to upper $20s, will see how they fit this spec. Would be interested in the thoughts of other CTers about Chards, either CA or otherwise, in the low $20s to about $40, as good every night drinkers.

8/13/19, 6:06 AM - At 94 95 rating for 40-50. Seems to fit the bill you mentioned. You can check my notes for other chardonnays at those price points. Most cost more. Grgich hills is in a quality to price category that is hard to beat. To get more you need to pay over 50 and generally in the 55-70 zone. Maybe Ramey is in the same zone. Joseph phelps you have to pay a bit more. Others you can buy at auction... again the quality cannot be certain since auctions are a bit of a risk.
