Opened and quickly tasted around noon for the dinner.
Tasted blind and then drunk over dinner. The first taste was disappointing, quite evolved, with signs of early oxidation. On the palate it was better, but was also showing evolved. The second pour during dinner was much better: now clean, no signs of oxidation, with the lovely complexity you expect from a Barolo of this age and this cru. The palate was powerful and assertive, with tannins still present.

2/6/23, 7:10 AM - Thanks for the note. I'm always amazed at how much air can transform aged Nebbiolo.

2/7/23, 8:46 AM - Barolo magic. You definitely cannot make a snap judgment on the first pour.

2020 Tissot (Bénédicte et Stéphane / André et Mireille) D.D. Arbois Red Blend
I'm guessing that there is no or almost no sulfur added to this wine, as there is so much residual carbon dioxide that the wine feels like a sparkling wine. Even after decanting and letting sit for 45 minutes - it still needs quite a bit of swirling in the glass to express the gas. And then the wine is such a joy, with bright, fresh, mouth watering scents of red berries, dried roses, and wet soil. Well balanced, focused, and energetic - this is just a super pretty wine, and very flexible with food. One night with fennel spiced roast pork loin, two days later, the second half of the bottle with a sukiyaki trout preparation. This wine will age well, and needs either that, or a very vigorous aeration so that the gas exits and the wine can reveal itself.

Blind and decanted. Traditional style Barolo? Quite sweet, went well with the lamb. 92

1/3/23, 7:44 AM - Thanks for the note. I suspect the sweetness it is a product of the hot vintage.

Oh boy. Asian pear, wet jasmine, lemon oil, quince. So fresh and light on its feet on opening, building richness with air. Mineral and Always taut and beautifully held, fizzing with energy, mineral, fresh, and never intrusive. Annora loved this wine, which in a Chardonnay is a great compliment and indicates a level of verve, freshness, and delicacy that can be difficult to find. 12%, $40.

12/12/22, 8:37 PM - I distinctly remember that lemon oil note in this wine. Glad I have a couple more of them.

Red
2010 Francesco Rinaldi e Figli Barolo Le Brunate Nebbiolo
My bottle shut down hard after 30 minutes, but reopened after a couple hours. I would still say that the tannins are fairly pronounced, but ymmv. Still plenty of classic barolo character. Delicious when it opened back up.

10/28/22, 8:10 AM - Oldwines - I have not had that happen with as many wines in the 10-15 year range as the the 5-10 year range, but I agree with your comment.

I just put that in there to contrast with the more recent note that the wine was immediately open for business.

Back to a sound bottle after a clunker over the summer. The color of tea-almost like a brandy. Dry, but there are waves of tea, nuts, oxidative fruit, and citrus on the palate. Complex nose and palate that morph through an array of flavors and scents. Has a good bit of power in reserve and the flavors sit on the palate for a while after tasting. Seems youthful still. Singular wines.

Tasting Ground official tasting, 2014 Produtorri del Barbaresco Riserva cru (Oinoscent): The most concentrated of then all, deep fruit core, showing depth and complexity, floral notes, ripe blue and black fruit, a touch smoke, earthy and oaky
In the palate, the wine shows high concentration, high acidity, mineral, less tannic than Montestefano but more explosive palate overall, by far the most complex, beautiful ripe fresh red fruit elevating the long finish.
Outstanding quality

2001 R. López de Heredia Rioja Gran Reserva Viña Tondonia Tempranillo Blend, Tempranillo
This bottle was very tight. Zero sediment and needed a lot of air. Huge potential for the future and needs at least 2-3 years, possibly more.

9/11/22, 7:34 AM - Appreciate the note as I would have thought it would be ready to go. This will be my first LdH gran riserva, but I love their wines in general.

the 2010 Campogiovanni Brunello, was drinking absolutely at its peak last night, tannins were nicely incorporated, nose subdued but beautiful, balanced wine with still good acidity, softened red fruit with a bit of fig, total mouth feel, finish was medium in length, went fantastically with light Italian fare of sausages, peppers and onions grilled outside in 20 deg. F temps. Wore a Down Jacket to do the grilling but worth it.

1/24/22, 12:49 PM - I have tried this vintage a few times now. I consider this producer to lean a little to the modern side of the spectrum (darker fruit, more concentrated, and polished), but it has been a consistently delicious wine.

Thanks for the reminder that I need to open another one soon.

2007 Taittinger Champagne Comtes de Champagne Blanc de Blancs Brut Chardonnay
Opened in a drunken stupor by a colleague to impress some women.

Beautiful brioche notes, rich & nutty but still fresh notes of green apple, pear, nectarine.

3 hour decant. Drank a couple months apart (Coravin) and the second time - with more air time - a more complete and satisfying experience. This is a terrific wine and big at 15% but you wouldn’t know it since it is very well integrated with the black fruit. I enjoyed it more when it was cool (in the mid 50s) but didn’t complain when it crept up (to the mid 60s) either but it does show its alcohol a bit more then. On the palette, great integration of the primary fruit (and plenty of it still) with the oak (I would guess all used/neutral oak) and herbs like bay leaf and Mediterranean dry blend. Beautiful powerful nose driven by black/blue fruit with spicy woody/tobacco notes from the wood and even mild floral aromas like marigold. Just a phenomenal QPR, especially for a Priorat wine at only $25. Wow. Moderate acid and good tannic structure still. Will hold another 3-5 years easily but won’t get better. Fully integrated now so drink up. Enjoyed at dinner with Berkshire pork chops

3/11/21, 7:18 AM - I agree this wine needs lots of air. I tried it over a few days in 2019 and it really blossomed on day two.

  • Lfholland commented:

3/11/21, 11:44 AM - I agree re QPR. I'm drinking lighter styles more often these days, but this is a good one to have on hand when you just want a big, bold, concentrated wine.

Very subtle on the nose, a little tight, some nutty development yet very fresh at the same time; bright entry, nice fruit, quite a dry style, dry biscuity character. Delicate. You need to contemplate this one, a slow burner.

3/8/21, 2:07 PM - Thank you for the note. I was surprised at the lack of other reviews on the site.

Do you feel like it will continue to develop in a positive way or is it in the drinking window now?

Red
1985 Cantine del Castello di Conti Boca Nebbiolo Blend, Nebbiolo
Decanted for sediment, but there really wasn't any. Given the very dark color and minimal brown at the rim, I decided to aerate in decanter; it got 4 hours, but for my tastes, could have used 6-7 hours. Youthful, elegant medium body, with still fresh acidity, good+ balance, and enough structure to keep this drinking well for another 3-5 years, at least. Some tobacco, a little cranberry tinged cherry, soil/place notes, and fine tannins still holding their own. Cork and fill in good+ condition. recommended+
