This review nailed the bottle we just drank (disappointing):
"CSIMM1161 WROTE: 90 Points
State Bird Provisions (San Francisco): From Magnum. Medium-to-light bodied flavors of black cherry, allspice, cedar, vanilla, and earth/soil. A faint herbal tinge on the back end. The delivery on this wine was fairly linear and somewhat flat; a little tight with tinges of alcohol-laced vanilla. Clipped on the finish. It came off young in terms of its restrained and lithe attack (like it needed to gain some serious weight), but also appeared somewhat over the hill with its fading fruit. Not sure what to make of this wine exactly. 88-90 points?"

94 Day 1 (best-tasting pinot I've had in a while and perhaps my best WS ever. Decided to save some for two days later. Bad call.

FINALLY! After years of under-performance, a Southing that comes through! Not sure if this had anything to do with it but, prior to uncorking tonight, I pulled two glasses from the bottle over the past four weeks with the Coravin.

Well, this was a superb bottle and the last three were 88-90 from 2013 - 2014 . The only difference? To make room in my cellar over a year ago, I took all of my remaining 2007 Southings out of their 55 degree comfort and placed them in my office that fluctuates from 68 - 78 degrees. Go figure ...

Very young ... decanted one hour; could have used 3-4. Enjoyed it more on Day 3! 88 on Day 1; 91 on Day 3

Young. Needs some bottle time to achieve the greatness of prior years.

Popped, decanted for 30 minutes. In hindsight, a 3-5 hour decant would have probably done wonders.

Very disappointed ... I was holding out on this one for a few years since the first '04 I ever had was one of my favorite bottles of Pinot ever. This one missed, badly. I'm glad to see there are still many 90+ scores but unfortunately this bottle was similar to Paul Lin's and Edclr's. Darn it!

Unfortunate that the recent tasters have been experiencing less, but we LOVED this bottle. Perhaps it was the easy comparison between a cork-tainted '07 Southing on Saturday - or the DJIA closing up 429 points today. Regardless, we aerated and decanted this gem for one hour and enjoyed with rib eyes and chocolate chip Toll Houses directly from the oven for the finish. Expected a bit more in the finish and preferred some more fruit (which I bet an extra hour or two in the decanter would have provided) but we're definitely happy with tonight's Transtherm sacrifice. I don't agree that you must necessarily consume the '05's immediately ... we have three left and we plan to see what could develop over the next 2-3 years. This was the best '05 Southing out of our twelve thus far!

Blind taste tested (six tasters) this $160 Alexandre Rochette against $53 2003 Michel Ogier Cote Rotie. The 2003 Ogier won 6-0. Everyone agreed the Ogier wasn't that special (88) but it was FAR BETTER than the Rochette & Cie! If the Rochette & Cie was $30 I'd give it an 80, but, grading on the curve based on its expense, it gets a 69 ... don't waste your money. OK, on the off chance that all six of us don't know how to "appreciate" a Cote Rotie, give it a 69.5.

Mistakenly bought four (4) of these thinking they were the 2005 - and on my wish list. Decanted for 2 hours and enjoyed with multi-grain wafers, brie and polished off with Oreo cookies (12). Considering this is a $28.00 cab blend, I'd give this one a 95 when grading on the curve. The 2005 was 5 points better ... not sure I'd put this one on my wish list.
