nice and bold wine. high alcohol (15%) doesn't push through too much.

    5/13/23, 8:33 PM - Agreed. It’s definitely not a hot wine.

Same as 7/22/2021. Opens up a little better 6 months later, but still prefer the other Rioja choices in this price range.
  • commented:

1/31/23, 5:34 PM - Could you give me a few recommendations in this same price range? Trying to find some other Riojas (not much an expert) and would like some recommendations. Cheers!

This wine is classical Rioja. Opulent nose of cherries, strawberries, vanilla, tobacco and balsamico.

Pleasing palate with great freshness but also quite a tannic bite. Smooth and very elegant. Great orange peel acidity. Medium long finish.

1/31/23, 5:31 PM - I get exactly the same things from this wine. Literally exactly. Even the balsamic.

Tight tannins; This wine can benefit from sitting a bit longer before enjoying.
  • commented:

1/18/23, 7:07 PM - Thanks for the review. I held on to it in part because of your review… It’s still tighter than I would expect in January 2023.

I don’t understand the 83 ratings. This is a phenomenal Rose. It is fresh, a little floral, but not sweet. Off dry with perfect acidity and slight tannins gripping the sides of the tongue. I (we) get strawberries and apricots on the palate along with a little minerality. On the nose, I’d add some fresh green weeds. It’s a very nicely complex and incredibly drinkable wine.
  • commented:

1/9/23, 7:26 PM - Brian, I entirely agree. There is definitely a time and a place for Rose and it's not all the time. With that said, if you are going to rate a wine, it should be objective. I don't love buttery/oaky Chardonnays, but I absolutely don't let that bias my ratings. I can appreciate a good one even if it's not my cup of tea, so to speak :-).

Merlot is subtle, big Bourbon, but if going into it as such this is a treat.
  • commented:

11/4/22, 9:39 PM - Entirely agree. You have to want the big bourbon flavors and this delivers. As long as you know what you are getting, this is a very enjoyable wine.

Has improved nicely with an additional year of bottle age. Smooth and full, with a richness that wasn't there a year ago. Worth grabbing a few bottles, that won't break the bank, from this always reliable winery.
  • commented:

10/13/22, 8:08 PM - Couldn’t agree more. A go-to bottle of Zin that is reasonably priced. It’s a jammy Zin, but not excessively so like a 7 Deadly would be.

Decanted for 30 minutes. The wine looks deep purple color. Elegant, medium-bodied. It smells like blackberry and fig. Tastes like plum, woody and tobacco. The wine style is in between new world and old world. Low acidity and sweetness. Smooth tannins. Very nice balance. Great value for money.

Nice earthy nose, decant 1 hr. Harsh and all over the place, not enjoyable. Aerate and decant another hour. No difference. Let sit 1 day on counter in bottle. Day 2 much much better and didn’t have to dump. Still nice earthy nose. Tannins are still rough, some blackberry, black licorice and fruit tart. Alcohol is potent and full in mouth. Flavors are in front with long very dry acidic finish.

Nice wine for $10 - in fact very good value. Not a 92 point wine as WS described. Has some nice qualities, but never really came together for me.
  • commented:

10/10/18, 8:15 PM - I bought this wine for the same reason and was similarly disappointed. Just posted my comment. Had been holding it for years. Still not great.

Drank over 3 evenings. Moderate fruit considering it's youth. A bit flabby, lacking a tannic backbone and acidity. Best on 3rd evening. Short term cellar time would help. A nice wine but other Alexander Valley Cabs are just as good or better for a few dollars less...
  • commented:

6/14/17, 7:12 PM - I would agree generally with what you said. I imagine those weaknesses in 2013. Drank in 2017 and loved it. (see review on 6/14/17) I'd love to know your recommendations on other Alexander Valley Cabs. Finding I like wines from there.

Color is translucent, garnet-infused with clear ruby reflections. It's somewhat dark for a pinot, but not opaque by any means. The wine is medium bodied, with initial flavors of crushed pomegranates - with some stems mixed in - and good acid. On the mid-palate, there's bing cherries, herbs, dry tannins, mint, and a slight touch of inoffensive bitterness. The finish is very dry, with tongue-wrapping red fruit, a dose of pepper, and medium length (20-30 seconds). For a California Pinot, it reminded more of what I'd expect from Oregon.
  • commented:

11/17/16, 5:16 PM - I would have to agree on all points, especially the characterization of it as more like Oregon than California. Unfortunately for me, I tend to prefer the California style more. That is probably sacrilegious to most Pinot Noir drinkers. I purchased four bottles of this. Just drank one and would probably give it an 87. I will let one more sit another year, and drink one each year for three years. I think it will get better. Not that it is bad, I agree wholeheartedly with this reviewer that it is quite good. I just think it will get even better.

A good basic Zin. This bottle seemed a bit tired compared to others I've had. Nice spice and good red fruits. I've seen high variation in price--under 9 its an ok deal, at 15 there are far better Zins at comparable prices.
  • commented:

8/6/15, 7:09 AM - Agreed with your comment. At <10, it's OK Zin. Anything more and it's overpriced. I too have seen a huge range on this particular bottle. I've paid $9 and I've paid $14. That's a pretty wide swing. I've tried multiple vintages and they are all basically the same.

Fig, cranberry, and green pepper notes on the nose. A spicy little number with a lot going on, plum, cherry, green pepper/jalapeño, with a coffee finish. This is a fun little wine that is very drinkable and enjoyable with or without food.

A little breathing turns this into nice deep blackberry, raspberry, mocha, and a little green pepper, but very clean, exceptional wine for Colorado, or elsewhere for that matter. I'm from the Denver area and regularly attend the Colorado Wine Festival and have seen great progress over the years, this is one of them. Will give this one another try to see if holds up to repeat tastings. Cheers!
