Alongside the brilliant 2007, both opened an hour+ before serving. This is a brooding powerhouse, so large-scaled for village wine. Unlike the 2007, this isn't classically "Chambolle" to me, with more dark fruits and meatiness that I'd consider more Gevrey-like, but still really wonderful.

2017 Domaine Michel Lafarge Bourgogne Pinot Noir
Another beautiful 2017. Much better than the 2015 that I tried previously which was rather blocky. Lovely acid kick and a deep, floral nose. Unmistakably Burgundy with a slight damp earth finish. I am relatively deep in 2017 Lafarge (price rather than quantity-wise) as I love the vintage, especially after the rave reviews for Volnay. This made me want to open one of the 1ers sooner rather than later.

I am a big Roumier fan based on his wines from the 1999-2010 period. The Chambolle Vill 12 was very disappointing. Dark in color and ‘blocky’, monolithic. Devoid of nuance. Served blind you would think it was a Napa Pinot. I don’t buy the story you often hear that it’s because it’s too young. In fact, when Roumiers are successful they show well young even when they clearly require more bottle age.

Impeccably balanced, pure and crunchy. Substantial profile with layered marvels. Obviously youthful, but 05 is still a vintage to beat, skeptical scrutiny welcome.

Tannic. Strong nose. Cigar, leather. A bit too tannic for me. Let this sit for 2-3 years and try again.

1/30/21, 4:31 PM - It just needs to be drunk 3 yrs from vintage. So 18 drink in ‘21 etc.
